“The place to stay for British Museum fans”
Reviewed 17 July 2010

This small, well-furnished hotel is within pleasant walking distance to most of the attractions in central London. Adjacent to attractive and interesting Russell Square park with both Tube and Bus stops (bus highly recommended-get the7 day pass if it fits) Good local community restaurants are around the block. The staff is competent and the whole atmosphere of the hotel is appealing. The BM is less than a 10 minute stroll along quiet streets. The hotel limo to Heathrow, about the same cost as a taxi, was icing on the cake-highly recommended.

The website for the hotel was very promising, coming across as a really chic boutique hotel but the reality felt a little more worn and shabby. The service was good on arrival with quick check in. The corridors and hallways felt a little shabby though and something you'd expect in a far cheaper hotel.

Our room was pretty small and everything just looked a little bit cheap and garish. The style I guess was themed around a Parisian / turn of the cntury type look. But the furniture just looked a little bit too plasticy / MDF.

The bed was a good size and very comfortable. Overall I'd say for thr same money you could do much better elsewhere.

We stayed for the night before the London marathon with 5 children. It was the best hotel experience we have had. The staff were fantastic - polite, helpful and looked genuinely like they were happy to help. They parked our car for us and then moved it out of the car park on Sunday morning so we didn't have to incur more expense than necessary. They put the luggage in the car without being asked. Our rooms were gorgeous (and made up exactly as we had agreed) and the children loved finding frog shaped bubble bath sachets on their pillows when we got back from eating out. My husband was served his breakfast in our room (early because of the marathon) and wasn't charged extra. At breakfast the staff found us a table in the conservatory rather than the main room, which reduced stress levels for everyone. The staff chatted to the kids to find out where we were going and again when we got back. It was a great experience and we will definitely stay there again.

I can only confirm what others have said about their positive experiences at this hotel. We stayed for three nights in June in a deluxe Bloomsbury room, returning in July for one more night on our way back to the States. Our first time, the room we had was on Montague Street, but we didn't experience any noise from the street and had no trouble sleeping. In July, we were given a deluxe Bloomsbury room facing the garden and it was lovely too. These aren't elegantly appointed suites, but they are very comfortable and I wouldn't stay anywhere else in London. We also have enjoyed the piano music in the bar between 7-10 PM (the first time it was a terrific woman jazz singer; in July it was a black musician whom we loved because he played all the old standards). And the general ambiance of the place is has an English quality. I think one reviewer put it well when he/she said it feels like a B&B without the negatives. The chain that runs the Montague seems to be trying to put guest satisfaction high on their list, and the staff go out of their way to comply. I loved finding outlets in our room that fit my three-prong plug without an adapter. I've never found that service anywhere else on my travels. And a thumbs up for the restaurant. The food is much better than the usual hotel fare. You can either eat in the garden patio (when it isn't raining) or in the lovely dining room.

We stayed at the Montague on the Gardens for four nights in June as part of a family trip to Europe. The accomodations were perfect. We had a suite which had a seperate room for our two teenagers which was absolutely perfect for us. The suite was very roomy and had ample space for the 4 of us and all of our luggage.
The boutique hotel resides on a very quiet street in a nice clean neighborhood by the British Museum that is very centrally located. We were within a 5 minute walk of 2 different tube stops which made it very convenient for all of our excursions. The hotel was very clean and quiet which is obviously important to us but What set this hotel clearly above the others was customer focus. An example of this was when we arrived, the gentleman at the Front Desk took the time to sit down with us, offer us tea, provide us some maps of the area and introduce us to the Concierge. A Very nice touch which made us feel welcome. Every employee that we encountered with the hotel had a great attitude and was always asking what else they could do for us. The Front desk staff, Concierge and the Doormen were exceptional as well as the staff at Breakfast in the Dining Room.
As far as the restaurant on premises, we had breakfast each morning there and it was very good and convenient. We also dined one evening at the Blue Door Bistro on the premises which was our favorite meal of our time in London.
Overall, I highly recommend it. When planning the trip months back I literally searched through more than 100 hotels in London looking for the right one which would meet our needs. I booked this one after reading through the reviews on trip advisor and visiting the hotel website. After a short time there we knew we made the correct choice. Our only disappointment was not spending enough time in London as there is so much to do. We are looking forward to a return trip to London and a return to the Montague!

We spent two nights here and would have liked to stay longer. The room was well appointed with very efficient air con which was a blessing in the heat. The staff were so attentive and the surroundings so attractive that we will certainly be back.

My husband and I stayed at the Montague for ten days on our honeymoon, and it was an absolute pleasure. This hotel is in Bloomsbury, which is a perfect location for traveling in and around London, as it is really in the center of everything. The hotel, however, is on a quiet street that is less than a block from the British museum, and a short walk from three different Tube stations. The inside of the hotel has a lot of quaint, old English charm that you would expect to find at a B&B, however it is not run like a B&B (thank goodness). They have a full staff of concierges who are extremely knowledgeable and ready to assist with literally anything you might require. The check in attendants and the bellboys are also equally helpful and ready to assist you in any way. Another plus for American travelers is this hotel has an (albeit small) elevator and air conditioning in all rooms! It also has internet that is run through the plasma screen TV in the room, so you don't need to worry about traveling with your laptop. Maid service comes into the room two times a day; one time in the morning to clean the room, and one time at night to turn down the bed and leave delicious cookies, candies, etc. The service in this hotel is equal to those of the five-star Las Vegas hotels, such as the Wynn. I cannot say enough about how amazing this hotel was, and how it enabled my husband and I to have a stress-free honeymoon. This is the perfect hotel for anyone who really wants to get a "London experience", but still wants modern conveniences. I encourage everyone to stay here, and I also encourage you to make use of the concierges- ours became our best friend while there!
