“A pleasant surprise after years of staying at average London hotels”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2010

I like the Bloomsbury area of London and have stayed many times in this district. Goodge Street offers a number of hotels but I've never found a good one....and it's a really noisy street. I chose the Montague as a result of Tripadvisor reviews and was pleasantly surprised. The rooms here are not cheap (you can certainly find cheaper ones in Goodge Streeet) but the double-glazing actually works and in any case Montague Street is much quieter. Why choose this hotel? Well, the nearest tube is Holborn (on both the Central and Piccadilly lines) and convenient for Oxford Street, Green Park, South Kensington Museums and the airport. It is just around the corner (literally) from the British Museum and Trafalgar Square is not far to the south. St Pancras (if you are heading to Paris) is a 10-minute taxi ride away. The room was pleasant but typically small (it always amazes me how much Londoners can cram into such a small space) and I was satisfied with my three night stay. I was travelling solo this time and often single rooms are not much better than walk-in cupboards - but this room was fine. The daytime staff were very helpful but the night-time receptionist ought to bone up on his local knowledge (he wasn't sure what time the BM opened...!). Bar staff were young and not that sharp. The restaurant looks nice but is expensive in what is already an expensive city. UKL 24 for a steak is pretty steep but there are plenty of cheaper places near the BM. In summary, I've learned from experience that you have to pay a bit more in this city to get something considerably better and I would stay here again. Oh...and full marks for free internet, which so many hotels continue to charge for.

You may be just a wee bit disappointed, as we were, that you could pay twice as much for this as for a room in a budget townhouse off Gower, and still not get a larger room. How very London. Even our "deluxe double" really just had room around the edge of the bed for us to navigate, and an entrance so narrow the morning room-serviceman had trouble getting the tea tray in; he had to walk in with bent knees to get it under the doorknobs! However, oh, my, what a pleasant stay. We slept excellently, under comfortable blankets in highly effective air conditioning, and nibbled outstanding pastries in the morning. Staff responded with alacrity to every request. And for enthusiasts of the British Museum, as we are, it was an ideal location, just a block away. We were committed to spending enough to have a really good time, and this was expensive for Americans whose dollar is so weak against the pound, but yes, I would spend it again.

A lovely warm and cosy hotel, great location across from British Museum. Felt like home away from home, staff very friendly and took care of all request and needs promptly, with a smile. Enjoyed breakfast and afternoon tea in lovely terrase setting.

This small, well-furnished hotel is within pleasant walking distance to most of the attractions in central London. Adjacent to attractive and interesting Russell Square park with both Tube and Bus stops (bus highly recommended-get the7 day pass if it fits) Good local community restaurants are around the block. The staff is competent and the whole atmosphere of the hotel is appealing. The BM is less than a 10 minute stroll along quiet streets. The hotel limo to Heathrow, about the same cost as a taxi, was icing on the cake-highly recommended.

The website for the hotel was very promising, coming across as a really chic boutique hotel but the reality felt a little more worn and shabby. The service was good on arrival with quick check in. The corridors and hallways felt a little shabby though and something you'd expect in a far cheaper hotel.

Our room was pretty small and everything just looked a little bit cheap and garish. The style I guess was themed around a Parisian / turn of the cntury type look. But the furniture just looked a little bit too plasticy / MDF.

The bed was a good size and very comfortable. Overall I'd say for thr same money you could do much better elsewhere.

We stayed for the night before the London marathon with 5 children. It was the best hotel experience we have had. The staff were fantastic - polite, helpful and looked genuinely like they were happy to help. They parked our car for us and then moved it out of the car park on Sunday morning so we didn't have to incur more expense than necessary. They put the luggage in the car without being asked. Our rooms were gorgeous (and made up exactly as we had agreed) and the children loved finding frog shaped bubble bath sachets on their pillows when we got back from eating out. My husband was served his breakfast in our room (early because of the marathon) and wasn't charged extra. At breakfast the staff found us a table in the conservatory rather than the main room, which reduced stress levels for everyone. The staff chatted to the kids to find out where we were going and again when we got back. It was a great experience and we will definitely stay there again.
