Treated my girlfriend to a stay in London for her birthday. Took advantage of a deal via one of the voucher sites which included large room, 3 course evening meal, cocktail each and breakfast. Prior to our stay I emailed to confirm the booking and mentioned the reason for our stay, which they clearly took note of.

The hotel itself is very nice with a fresh, modern decor and we were pleased by the large, spacious room but I was most impressed by the service and effort put in by the staff members.

On arrival we were attended to by 2 staff members, one of whom wished my girlfriend a happy birthday, great touch which surprised and pleased her. In the room a birthday card had been left on the bed, a small touch she loved. It was hand written by a staff member which I think is much more personal and effective.

We had two single beds and asked reception to correct this whilst we popped out, which they did without bother. When we returned I asked about the evening meal I had pre-paid for. The arrangement was explained and we were kindly given a voucher for 2 glasses of prosecco to accompany our meal, again with a happy birthday from another staff member.

When we were seated for our meal my girlfriend was elated to see the table had been specially decorated for her birthday with some glitter and sparkles. The waiter and waitress both wished her a happy birthday and were very attentive all evening. Furthermore the food and cocktails were great, food was a very good standard.

This company understand how to be hospitable and clearly put customer service at the forefront of their minds. The staff made a very good hotel a great hotel and would certainly get my business again.

The Mercure charged 40 pounds per night to upgrade from a standard Double room to a Superior King Room. 2 couples agreed to pay the fee. Couple 1's room was ready upon check in, Couple 2 was not. Upon entering the upgrade Superior Room couple 1 found a room of standard size with 2 twin beds and definitely not Ergonomically designed. When the front desk was informed they said..oh housekeeping didn't put the beds together. We all know this is a common practice, but the room still was not Superior. When couple 1 asked if they keep the beds as twins can they forgo the upgrade charge...yes they can, so they did. (40 pounds to push 2 beds together?) Off everyone went to explore London and returned late. Couple 2 grabbed their stuff from Couple 1's room and checked in to there's. Couple 1's AC did not work and the room was warm and stuffy. Engineer was in the room from 6am trying to fix the AC with the door propped open with a suitcase. Couple 1 went to their friend's Superior King room to find an actual Superior Ergonomically designed room at the end of the hall. Couple 1 then inquired about the difference and since their AC didn't work, they would like the real Superior King room and will pay the 40 pound per night fee. Front desk says...we are sold out for tonight, but someone is due to check out of the Superior King room end unit today with someone checking into it. If you are willing to pack your stuff and move out, we can clean both rooms and you may have the Superior King room at the end of the hall just like your friends. My question..where do you think the person who was supposed to be in the Superior King room actually stayed? In the Twin Room with no AC? Other notes about Mercure....Great Breakfast, Great doorman/concierge Gilbert restaurant open at night, good location...DO NOT ask to borrow a flat iron, you will get someone's personal equipment with hair in it. And really what is ergonomic? The lights turn on when you get out of the bed? OH...and the standard double room is nice and cozy...the door does not open all the way and if there are two people in the room, one may have to crawl across the bed to enter it. I myself found my standard double room, although small to be perfectly fine and the bed was very comfortable. It was the strange way they ran the front desk that was the sad part.

Room Tip: Rooms are cozy, but they are fine...a standard 3 star hotel. Be sure to your Superior King room is...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Mercure Bloomsbury. The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. Our room was comfortable and had all we needed. The hotel was clean and smartly furnished and the breakfast was excellent. Add to that its great location with buses passing right outside, it made for a delightful break.
