Overall this is not a bad hotel. We were (are at the time of this review) stuck in London and lost our reservation at the Sheraton. On a combination business trip/vacation with the family. Did not have high expectations based on the price. London is an expensive town and if you are on a budget the Phoenix is good. We did move to another hotel due to the concern related to personal belongings noted below – got tired of carrying around all of my work equipment (laptop/documents, etc) every time we left the room. The majority of our costs are covered by my work. If I were paying out of pocket for everything we would have stayed at the Phoenix.

Positives:
•The hotel is in a good location
•Room was clean
•The room with the loft area was a nice way to separate everyone for a little privacy
•Laundry mat very close by
•Bar in the lobby
•Free wifi (very slow, but free)
•Quaint and with character

Negatives:
•Staff were clearly stressed due to the volume of people - not horrible service, but not great. Called the front desk 3 times and no one ever answered. Walked downstairs and there were always 2 clerks sitting there.
•Electricity for half of the room went out in the evening and had no lights in the bathroom (no windows) until the next morning.
•No security for your belongings at all - nothing in the room and the doors have a single standard key (not electronic). Baggage storage area (pre check in) was open and I could have easily had my pick of luggage the number of times I went in and out.
•Little bit of a walk to the tube - especially with young children.
•No heat or AC to speak of and the building is stuffy - would think twice in the summer.

Summary:
If you have a tight budget this hotel will work. I mentioned security above only in reference to belongings – did not see any personal safety issues. Probably best for travelers who don’t mind a Hostel like feel for their stay and don’t have a lot of items to worry about. Would not recommend for the business traveler or someone with high standards for their hotels.

I'm pleased I checked with tripadvisor before booking. The Best Western Pheonix though modest has a nice relaxed feel about it and its comfortable and clean. The young lass at Reception was friendly and very helpful throughout our 2.5 day stay. Room 221 would be small if you had a lot of luggage which we didn't. The bathroom is cramped with a shower over the bath. If you forget an adaptor the hotel will loan you one on bond. There are tea/coffee making facilities but no fridge or microwave. Close the windows if you're a light sleeper, the traffic noise from the busy street below will keep you awake though it does lessen in the wee hours. There's a good variety continental breakfast and more than sufficient to get you started. Numerous eating establishments and convenience stores are just around the corner and Hyde Park a 10 min walk away. Due to its proximity (5 mins away) we used Bayswater Station to travel to Buckingham Palace, The London Eye, Westminster Abby, Big Ben, The Tower of London and London Bridge. It was a flying visit so it was good to be in the thick of it without feeling that you were.

I have been stopping at the Phoenix for some time now. The staff are always very welcoming and the service never falters.

It is a well kept hotel with good facilities and the location is great. It is in a quiet square but with lots of shops and restaurants just 200 yards around the corner.

For being London this hotel provided a basic but nice clean room, ok continental breakfast, and a location close to the Bayswater tube station at a very reasonable price.

We stayed at this hotel even before it was taken over by Best Western and have stayed so many times it feels like home. The welcome and hospitality is second to none. The hotel is clean and cosy and the beds are very comfortable. There is no traffic noise and we have always slept well. There is an extensive choice of food offered on the continental breakfast . The location is suberb near two tube stations and the cosmopolitan feeling walk ing down the Bayswater Road is a great start to our theatre/weekend breaks in London. I would highly recomment this hotel - you won't be disappointed.
