“Dazzling stay”
Reviewed 28 July 2014

I booked this hotel for my partners birthday and wasn’t disappointed, in fact from the moment we stepped inside we felt very welcome. Met by the beautiful chandeliers, staircase and art deco interior (we later found out was designed by the same man who designed the Titanic interior) and very friendly concierge. On the off chance I asked at reception if our room would be ready, I booked a Junior Suite. It wasn’t ready, but the lady behind reception said we could check in, and that way we just needed to leave our bags with the concierge and pick up the keys later when we returned. The lady was a pleasure, a real ambassador of customer service. I might be biased because she gave us room 718, a slight upgrade on view, a corner room which had 180 degree views over Russell Park and had lovely views of the Eye, the Gherkin and the main square.
When we returned in the evening to change we were met out of the taxi by a very smart concierge, dressed in top hat, key pick up was smooth, we collected our case and ascended to our room. It was a very hot day, so were very grateful of the cool air conditioning and the cool décor of the suite. It comprised of a clean, stylish beautiful bathroom, king-size bed, balcony seating, desk area, chaise lounge and a further seating area AND a full length sliding mirror plus much more. Perfect for the birthday girl!
We popped down to the bar area before we headed out for the evening. We were dazzled by the décor and drinks/waiter service was at the table. The nibbles with our drinks were appreciated. It was a perfect space to relax after a long day, or begin a night out. There was a bat menu, we didn’t eat, but the food that came out of the kitchen ‘mini fish and chips’ etc. looked lovely and there was a good selection for vegetarians, simple choices, but favourites. Why can’t all hotels understand less is definitely more.
We had a comfortable night’s sleep. It was a very quiet room. Tea making facilities were the norm and complimentary water in the fridge was appreciated.
The hotel is closely located for London Euston, and we walked to the South Bank in 30 minutes. Check out was quick and simple. From start to finish staff were friendly, professional, smart and courteous. All in all I was very proud to take my partner there for her birthday weekend, we shall be returning and we will recommend to others.
Thank you Russell Square, you did me proud.

Room Tip: 718. Corner room with beautiful views, Best Junior Suite. Recommended by the receptionist.

Stayed here for 2 nights due to work in Central London. Don't be put off by the reviews - I found a very good rate on line (direct at hotel website) and was not disappointed at all. Room was large and well furnished, great bathroom and excellent aircon (heatwave in London so much needed). Breakfast was great with very friendly and efficient service - also true at front desk. Transport links are very good and plenty to see in the local area with easy walk into covent garden, Leicester square etc. Would be very happy to stay here again - and enjoyed the character of the place.

We have visited 3 other hotels in Russell Sq, due to the great location for getting around, decided to visit Hotel Russell this time. The staff are friendly, the hotel on the surface looks great, I suppose it all depends on the type of room but the layout of our room was somewhat strange, you have the door opening that as you walk through, unless you open all the way, you walk into a cupboard side. The bathroom door opens right next to the bed and the sink is so small that you end up with water all over the floor just trying to wash your face. We had a free meal on the 1st night as part of the hotel deal, thankfully it was free as I was not overly impressed with the food

a beautiful looking hotel with attractive foyer and bar the room we stayed in a different story. booked a double standard which was more like a single standard. while i appreciate its an old building and rooms are varying sizes this should not have been sold as a double. the bed was pushed up against a wall so getting in and out of bed was very difficult no space in the room at all no set of drawers or a proper wardrobe just a rail. very very disappointed worst room ive stayed in in london. wont stay here again certainly not four star . they create this illusion on entering the hotel especially with the uniformed concierge but the room we had was more a b and b in a seaside town.

I chose this hotel because of its location and I needed to book somewhere to stay in a hurry. The many negative reviews on this site led me to believe the rooms would be shabby and run down so I was astonished to discover my room was excellent and, apart from a rather slow draining bath and a hairdryer that didn't work (quickly replaced by the efficient and friendly staff), I found this to be a wonderful place to stay. Even the wifi worked well. Don't be put off by the carping reviews. It's not budget accommodation but good value for money in my view. If you are troubled by street noise ask for a room on the Bernard Street side of the building.

Beautiful hotel, friendly staff, fantastic marble staircase. The room was definitely smaller than expected, but looked clean. Very long walk from lift to room. Unfortunately the bed was awful - old, creaky, uncomfortable. Really needs an update. Not sure I'd bother staying here again as Bloomsbury has lots of hotels with better rooms than this at similar prices.
