“Good hotel and location”
Reviewed 27 March 2014

Stayed at the Travelodge for two nights on business. It was the first time we have stayed in a Travelodge and were pleasantly surprised - the bedrooms and public rooms are basic but well presented and are extremely good value for money. Breakfast was more than adequate and it was a pleasure to be greeted by Jeremy each morning and given advice on the self service facilities. All the staff we came into contact with were both helpful and polite and would certainly recommend this hotel to people who want a cheap London hotel that is clean and comfortable in a location so near Theatreland, Covent Garden, China Town etc.

The carpet was badly stained at the entrance. Not very welcoming! Window was broken. Room was hot and there was a lot of noise as the door didn't close very well. Check-in was very strange! There are better alternatives.

First the good points. Travelodge Covent Garden is in an excellent location, at the top of Drury Lane and within a couple of minutes' walk from Covent Garden Piazza. There are good transport links with other parts of London by bus and Tube but you can also walk to so many places from there.

In this Travelodge, the bed was very comfortable and there is secondary glazing to minimise noise from outside. Heating in the room was adjustable and the duvet wasn't too heavy.

However, Travelodge remains the Ryanair of the hotel world. True, it's cheaper than most London hotels and I suppose you get what you pay for. We stayed three nights and what we paid averaged just over £98 per night. That included £10 for an early check-in, but no breakfast. (There are lots of cafes nearby). I'm pretty sure you wouldn't find another hotel in that area as cheap.

The problem is that Travelodge make you feel that it's a cheap hotel, when with a little effort, your stay could be made more pleasurable. The room was very sparsely decorated, with rather dim lighting and only one 'picture' on the wall. There's a small desk, a reading lamp, a plastic chair, an open hanging space for clothes and that's it. The overall impression is grey and utilitarian, the only splash of colour being stripey curtains and a matching bed-dressing.

If you want a hair-dryer you will have to go down - five floors in our case, and only one lift working - and ask at reception. I was told to 'bring it straight back because we don't have many'. Well, I'm sorry Travelodge, but in such a large hotel, you should have a few more.

There were tea/coffee making facilities in the room, but only the most flimsy plastic cups provided for drinking water. These buckled when you picked them up. It would cost a fraction of a penny to provide slightly more robust ones, given the bulk buying power of Travelodge.

The shower had good water pressure, but ours was too hot, and though we could adjust it to make it hotter, the dial wouldn't turn to make it cooler. Also, it was a high fixed shower, so very difficult, ladies, to wash your nether regions unless you can stand on your head! The toilet seat also needed tightening.

The TV didn't even have a full range of Freeview channels - some had very poor reception. There is Wi-Fi but you have to pay for it.

If you just want a place to lay your head, this Travelodge will suit you fine. If you want comfort, go elsewhere.

A fresh and clean hotel. Rooms were spotless, bed very comfortable and bed linen crisp, clean and white. Location was excellent, walking distance to lots of sights, theaters, oxford st and restaurants. There is no hairdryer in room, had to go to reception to get one, no drawers for clothes and no bathroom toiletries. Would like to see these put in. I would go back to hotel when in London again.

This Travelodge is central but is a very ordinary place to stay. The room had obviously been refurbished in a basic style with new curtains and a bed trim to match. The bathroom appeared new but the soap was like cardboard and hard to lather. No toiletries in the room so don't forget to bring your own. Hard pillows but a warm duvet! Do not have a room in the basement near the car park exit/entrance as the room vibrates with noise and is a pain very early in the morning! The breakfast is good value with a choice of fruit and cereals, bread and croissants and a variety of hot food. Not sure about the fruit juice as it tasted like weak sickly orange squash. It is always great to see the lovely young man who greats every guest so enthusiastically at breakfast to check you in and wish you a nice day as you leave - he has been at the hotel for many years. Stay here as it is cheap and basic but in the main clean.

Room Tip: Not near the car park exit/entrance

As a college-aged couple, we spent three nights at the Travel Lodge. This was a great home base, as it is a 5 minute walk for the Hoborn Tube Stop (on the main central Piccadilly Line) and British Museum. Piccadilly Circus (along with the many many shops, restaurants, and pubs) was about a 15 minute walk, while St. James Park and Buckingham palace was about a 25-30 minute walk. One of the hotel employees, Alin, was extremely helpful and friendly throughout our stay. The bar in the hotel had a good selection of food for dinner or late-night snacks, and the beers on tap were cheaper than most of the local pubs or bars. Rooms were spacious and well kept, while the rooms on the higher floors had really nice view of St. Paul's Cathedral and the Shard. My only complaint was the lack of shampoo or conditioner for the showers; otherwise, an excellent stay!

Stayed two nights - great location and value for money. Very basic rooms but if you just need a base it's adequate. You get tea and coffee in room which you can top up from reception. Towels are clean and soft. TV with basic channels.
No hair dryer or iron but you can loan a hair dryer if required.
Breakfast extra but again basic - not sure I would pay for breakfast again plenty of places to get breakfast.
