Cost-cut, clean, convenient, comfortable with quality

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 10 Apr 2024
Our need was for a cost-cut, clean, convenient, comfortable and quality West London hotel for our single-night stay. We were attending a blues gig at The Royal Albert Hall. Not minding a walk, we were content with the location of this hotel, in the northern part of Earls Court, about a mile from the venue.

On arrival we were pleased with the location of this hotel, which was on a quiet side-street. The hotel’s general appearance, in particular the very secure reception, was very good. All of the staff encountered were helpful, efficient and pleasant.

Our room was in the basement, access to which was by lift only (but there were exterior stairs serving as an emergency exit). Our warm and cosy room was small and ensuite (the latter a must for us). Natural light through a single window made this basement room less claustrophobic than it would otherwise have been. This window gave a partial street view of the feet and legs of pedestrians. When the curtains were open pedestrians could, with some effort, have seen inside our room… but would they bother?

The furnishing were in good-shape, but the bedside cabinet was far too big for the space in which it was placed; with part of the cabinet projecting out in front of the doorway to the ensuite. I imagine that someone catching their thigh on the corner of this cabinet (ouch!) in the middle of the night would be pretty displeased.

The TV (with remote) worked well, but for standard channels only (i.e. no Netflix etcetera). A hair-drier was provided. The hot drink making kit was good and the teabags produced good tea (we did not try the coffee). The biscuits were good too. We were invited to help ourselves to extra provisions from the reception, and did so.

The bed was comfortable, but placed in the corner of the room; thus the person sleeping on the left side of the bed (next to the wall) had to shuffle down to the foot of the bed to get out: not ideal for someone less able.

In the quiet of the night you can hear the nearby Underground trains rumbling past in their tunnels, but the noise wasn’t invasive.

The clean ensuite was excellent, a really good shower, good lighting and mercifully the automatic extractor fan was quiet. The fresh towels, bottled soaps, shampoo and lotions were all of good quality. The door into the ensuite was opaque-glazed, and this was really handy, because the lighting in the main room was not at all good.

Room lighting was via one flush-mounted ceiling spotlight near the room door. There were three more of the same type of spotlights mounted in casing immediately above the head of the bed. This meant that lighting was horrifically blinding if switched-on when lying down in bed, especially-so in the middle of the night. The push on/off switch for these room lights had a dimmer action (it rotated clockwise/anticlockwise) that had zero effect on the intensity of the light. The solution was to use the ensuite light (the switch for which was just above the room light switch), and this gently illuminated the main room courtesy of the glazed door.

Despite the issues, it was a pleasant stay for a single night, and we will visit again I’m sure.

The room was small but had lots of storage space and was perfectly adequate for our needs. Lovely hot bath and powerful shower. Safe, good sized fridge and ice department. Sol on reception was so helpful and friendly. We would stay again when travelling to London for the Royal Albert Hall, which is a fifteen minute walk

Excellent location and staff were very friendly and attentive. Staff also have great recommendations of where to eat in the local area. Room and ensuite very clean. Room was a bit on the small side but it was perfect for our trip as we were out and about exploring and not based in the hotel much. Would definitely return.
