“London hotel....good & bad”
Reviewed 10 March 2014

Booked a lastminute 'secret hotel' deal literally two days in advance, checked in for a saturday night stay as part of a shopping trip. The hotel is a nice walk from Oxford street so perfect for that and just what we needed. We were upgraded at check-in which was a nice surprise, and offered the choice of a double or twin - so we chose a twin room which was located on the 3rd floor in the East wing. Room was fine - decent size with a large window, and I liked that it had a bath and a seperate shower. Beds were comfy, although I had a terrible nights sleep - but this was because of the room temperature (it was too hot even with the aircon on full blast) and I did have a couple of drinks (can't really blame the hotel for that!). We made a dinner reservation in the Asian Fusion restaurant - dishes were all really nice except for the Thai green chicken curry - it wasn't to any of our tastes but the manager took the meal off of our bill and offered us a complimentary cocktail each which was a nice touch.
Our room included breakfast - we went down to be seated at 9.30 and we were able to walk straight in and get a table no problem, it was busy but not rammed. Breakfast was buffet style and a good quality with plenty of options - also the breakfast staff were really friendly and chatty. The reception lady that checked us in was also very polite and helpful.
For the price we paid I would stay here again, although the surrounding area isn't fantastic, it's in a convenient location.

Expensive rooms, >200 pounds rooms but no breakfast included. In the morning there is no hot water for a shower, outside of 7-9 am the water is hot and pleasant. The knobs for the A/C didnt work, the heating in the room was stuck at 16-18 degrees, I'd prefer 18-20. WLAN internet is lousy, if you have a laptop and ethernet, it is manageable. Again not included in the price of the room.

This Hilton property is located near two Underground stations and the Paddington train station. Thus it's easy to travel to and from Heathrow and top get to a large number of tourist sites. We reserved an executive level room, which turned out to be in the East Wing, where the exec lounge and fitness center are located. I discovered that the rooms in the Tower are bigger and more modern, although not as convenient in terms of lounge and fitness center access. Our bath had a very tiny shower, and the A/C sometimes made noise overnight. The housekeeping service was inconsistent. The exec lounge was quite small, and became very crowded at breakfast on many days. Dinner snacks were OK, but not a wide selection. The fitness center was also small, causing waits for access to treadmills and elipitical machines. All in all, not one of the better Hilton properties.

Room Tip: go to a Tower room, on a high floor.

The location of this hotel is excellent for someone arriving via Heathrow Airport. Hop on the Heathrow Express, which is a train which drops you off about a 10-minute walk from the hotel.

There are numerous restaurants nearby. The area seemed pretty safe and I didn't feel at all endangered when making the walk between the hotel and Paddington Station at 6am on a Saturday.

The fitness center is nice enough; the equipment works well and the facility is clean. I do wish it had a hot tub.

Now the challenges:
1) My shower had no hot water on 3 or 4 days. This was almost certainly due to a large percentage of conference attendees taking a shower at about the same time, but one would think that higher end hotels with conference facilities would know how to deal with this. The shower controls also weren't particularly intuitive.
2) There wasn't any wired Internet connection in the room.
3) My room had an adjoining door. I could frequently hear the neighbors in the adjoining room pretty well. The adjoining door appeared to have a small 1 centimeter hole drilled into it near the edge of the door and this hole appeared to be filled with tissue or something like that. I didn't investigate, but it seemed this hole could have become a peephole if the people in the next room weren't scrupulous .
4) My room had a really strong perfume smell one night. This might have been due to people in the adjoining room, or it could have been something else, such as the cleaning people or the smell arriving via a vent. It seemed that the strong smell occurred at around 9pm in the evening, which would suggest that the cleaning people weren't at fault.

Room Tip: Tower rooms appear to have hot water challenges

All reviews of British hotels should begin with a note that they are on average lousier and more expensive than the rest of the world. This one is better than the British average, but that doesn’t mean “good”.

First night in a smoking room (blecch) in the dilapidated “Tower” wing, route to my room was past a missing door revealing fraying electrical circuitry. They promised me a fancy room at the top of a tower to make up for it, but didn’t come through on the promise. Next 4 nights in the West Wing 8th floor, which was perfectly competent and pleasant. Decor nothing special. Noise level OK, bed OK, heating/ventilation OK, shower OK.

Getting checked in, and then moving rooms, required considerable standing in line, then endless interaction between the front-desk person and their computer.

Breakfast is overpriced and blah but there are lots of alternatives within a block or two. In fact the location is great, tons of decent pubs and Asian restaurants right nearby. Also handy to several Underground lines.

I did laundry: 4 each shirts/T-shirts/briefs/socks: £74!

NOTE: I was at a convention (several hundred) and our mailing list was full of people screaming about problems with heating, service, Internet, and so on. It seems to matter a lot where in the hotel you end up.

Room Tip: I was in 880 in the West wing; people at our convention in the West wing seemed mostly pretty happy.

We stayed here with our large family during the recent half term holiday and this hotel is very good for large families.Spacious King Superior rooms with two large King beds with nice city views. We've stayed here many times and on this occasion there were a few minor delays but all were resolved in such a friendly and professional manner by the on duty Reception Manager Mohammed and the Reception male supervisor I think from Spain.
Very helpful and accommodating breakfast team who kindly reserved a table for 10 for us in the morning so we were seated straight away bypassing the rather long queue into the restaurant.

Room Tip: If you're with a large family i.e 2 adults and 2 children either book King superior family room...

The British pride themselves on muddling through adversity. The Hilton Metropole is an immersive experience with their culture. The staff tries to compensate for the tawdry infrastructure, but knows it has little hope of success.

We paid £45 per night for the privilege of a cold breakfast in a crowded lounge with no available seats, or, as we were conference attendees, we were thrown out of the main restaurant and relegated to a distant cavern with a poor excuse for a buffet. I.e. the £45 per night 'upgrade' was a complete rip-off.

The in-room air conditioning was uncontrollable and left one tossing and turning all night. The housecleaning staff were somewhat lackadaisical, and even disappeared a small personal memento of mine.

All in all an overpriced experience in the tattered life.
