Little did I know the person who booked my 8-night stay at The Academy had signed a contract preventing cancellation in exchange for a slightly lower rate. The price was for a double room but when I arrived internationally on a Sunday night, I was given a room that was postage-stamp size, was outside the breakfast-room stair, and had no outlets for my 'devices."
It was a struggle to enter the tub—no room to get in! Had to move the only chair in front of the door to have room to open my suitcase. Literally! I had a big public engagement the next day and couldn't sleep a wink.
They moved me next morning (actually, twice: they remembered there was no A/C in the 1st new room) but like most London hotels that are aimed at tourists (who were carrying teeny-weeny Ryan Air-size suitcases), they don't care about you.
Breakfast from the sparse buffet (I had a small bowl of fruit) cost £12 plus an unwarranted 12.5% service charge (my cappuccino also had a service charge). Wifi was capped and VERY SLOW and administered by the notably poor put ubiquitous Swisscom, causing me grief.
Shower had black mold, but this new room was otherwise fine. Cleaners of other rooms made noise, but in an old hotel I am not sure one can expect better. Buffet workers were unpleasant but rest of the staff was nice and polite.
But the general lack of concern and the Wifi problem led me to leave mid week… leading my sponsors into a losing fight over return of funds. I don't demand personal care, just a decent room with appropriate facilities (outlets, baths, space, quiet, ability to do necessary emailing…) Lesson: If you have anything other than cheap tourism in mind, don't stay here, and never sign a nonrefundable contract with ANY hotel you haven't personally seen or experienced. London is a very bad market for travelers.
