Some people who review their Travelodge stay seem to think that they're going to be spoilt rotten for a fraction of the price of a typical central London hotel. There's going to be a reason why it's cheap!! Travelodge don't do fridges, telephones in your room or complimentary shampoos, no big deal! & why complain about their bog-standard cheap breakfast? Do they not know that there are actual cafes in London that are worth the ten minute walk to try instead?! Travelodge are hardly known for their cuisine!!
Anyway, I booked a £35 double room for a Saturday night, so certainly wasn't expecting the Ritz. We just wanted a central spot that would be safe, warm, clean and anonymous to rest our weary heads after a rare child-free day & night out in London.
The hotel was fine. The rooms were dated, but I was asleep most of the time, so wasn't worrying over the 80's colour scheme. The road was noisy, but we'd chosen to be central and stay on a main thoroughfare to & from Kings Cross so didn't assume the cars would stop after 11pm.
Our room was really hot though and we became aware in the night that having turned off the radiator, it was now leaking all over the floor. We popped down to reception at 3am to explain. they couldn't have been more helpful, finding us an alternative room instantly and being very apologetic. The next morning they offered us a late check out until 2pm free of charge and were again very friendly and helpful.
They also helped us find the nearest spot to get some Boris bikes and everywhere you were in the hotel the staff would say 'hello' and were all very personable.
Oh & we found a great cafe for a proper, cheap, full English breakfast five mins walk to the south near Exmouth Market.
So, I'm not complaining! The best £35 Saturday night stay in London I could have hoped for!!

We booked this hotel before we read the reviews, so we were actually really afraid of ending up in some sort of shambles. All those reviews saying 'this place should be condemned' or 'you might as well sleep in a cardboard box in the street' made us very apprehensive on what we might find.
But it really isn't all that bad. True, it is old and worn and they do make some fundamental mistakes against good hospitality, but trust me, there are much, much worse places then this.

First of all: It isn't a five-star hotel. One star at the most. You get what you pay for. We paid 70 euros per room per night and we got a decent place to sleep, shower and have breakfast, in one of the more expensive hotelling cities in the world. The room was small (originally meant to be a single room, turned double by putting a bigger bed in it) and indeed, the artex on the wall is horribly 70's. The bathroom was tiny, but adequate. I am 6'3" and I did not fit under the shower. To get wet at all, I had to twist the showerhead off, to produce a massive stream of water under which I could have the shower I wanted to have.

The room was also quite clean. There is a difference between worn and dirty. Chalk residue on the taps is wear and tear, not dirty. The toilet, the bath, the sink, the mirror, the floor; all were clean. Our bed got made and they even folded my wife's nighty neatly on the pillow.

The personnel was friendly and helpful but this subject does, regretfully bring me to the fundamental mistakes against hospitality standards I noticed:
First, when you enter, you expect to see someone at the desk to welcome you. There was no-one. Luckily, a delivery of take-out food for the girls behind the counter was made at the same time we entered, so we were noticed and checked in.
Second; when a 24-7 bar and food service is offered, you expect the bar to have some-one behind it at all times. There wasn't. One has to ring two bells, sometimes more then once, to get service.
Third: Personnel of the hotel should not, at any time, be found drinking at the bar of the hotel. On Friday night, there was a small group of off-duty employees, socializing with their colleagues who were still at work. Big no-no!
Fourth: Personnel of the hotel should not have an argument outside at the back of the hotel, that wakes up the guest (well, at least one of them) at four o'clock in the morning.

So, yes, it is old. Yes, it desperately needs a complete refurbishment and yes, there are flaws to be found. But for the money and the location (10 minutes walk from St. Pancras International train station, 30 minutes walk from Trafalgar square) it is value for money. Not good value, just value. Which is enough if all you need is a place to sleep, basically.

Got this hotel on offer for £39 for a double room which is a good price. The rooms are bland with no extra's other than tea/coffee making facilities but they are comfortable. Definitely not worth the full price though!

Having read some of the reviews l was a little wary of what we would find but hotel was fine for what we wanted. Stayed at this hotel for one night. Staff were very friendly and helpful a big thanks to duty manager Steve for his help on day of departure. Room was clean and comfortable if not a little too warm. There were plenty of towels and bathroom was clean, bath ran very quickly and plenty of hot water We stayed on the fifth floor and were glad of the lift. Although it is on a main road it was not too noisy with window open. Great location for getting to St Pauls and the Borough also good for tube. There is another Travelodge closer to Kings Cross but this one was only 15 minutes walk and cheaper. Good price for room and would stay again.

Stayed there for work in October. Rooms were laughable. Like a prison cell. Single bed in the corner. No wadrobe door. One hanger. avoid at such a price... £75 plus.
Purchased breakfast was reasonable, but the rooms and the hotel toilet cleaniness let it all down. Not impressive.

We are booked in a double room for 3 nights at a savers rate - thank goodness we are not paying more. Staff on arrival were friendly and helpful. Lift up to our room is very creaky and I suspect am a little afraid it may breakdown, the door on it doesn't shut properly at the bottom. I have just read other reviews a few weeks ago to say the lift was then broken. The room is ok but is dirty, especially the bathroom and it is badly in need of refurbishment - mirror cracked and taped, wood all scraped, carpets dirty etc. We have stayed in many Travelodges and never ordered a dinner from the restaurant and we did as we were tired and didn't want to go out again. THE MEAL WAS THE WORST MEAL I HAVE EVER HAD ANYWHERE IN MY LIFE - not exaggerating. I ordered handbatttered haddock, peas and chips. I got a plate of food that was cooked from frozen (cheap stuff like you get a Heron or Iceland and the value make at that). I had to give the plate back as the fish was over cooked on one end and I couldn't even cut it with my knife. The peas were not cooked and the chips were over cooked. I got a second plate of food, which was put on the same plate I just had (as I had put ketchup on it) and this was no better really - the fish was still over cooked on one end and the fish was cheap, nasty stuff. My daughter had a chargrilled chicken and bacon salad - none of the so called chicken was chargrilled at all and half of the lettuce was brown. I paid £21.50 for these meals and complained at the reception. I was told to speak to the manager in the morning. The ice-cream vending machine didn't work in the foyer and our shower is also not working - it only is boiling hot and the dial keeps falling off.
Not impressed with this hotel at all. It would be alright if you did not care about hygiene and didn't order any food. Since eating - myself and daughter have had bad stomach's also and I don't think this is a coincidence.
I will speak to the manager in the morning and see what transpires.
