“Just what we needed!”
Reviewed 13 June 2014

This hotel was perfect for our needs. My daughter and I were in London for a couple of nights to do some shopping, go to the theatre, have a good meal and attend the Foodies Festival on Clapham Common.
Check in was quick and painless, and our room was ready even though I was really early, which was an unexpected bonus.
The staff were really pleasant, especially the tall dark girl in the bar, (Anna perhaps ?), who served my coffee and sandwich with more grace than I have experienced in top end restaurants.
The room was clean, basic, and had absolutely everything we needed. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was sparkling.
The Concierge was a lovely gentleman who was intrigued by our request for a car to our chosen restaurant. (Prawn on the Lawn, which has fabulous fresh shellfish), and when we last saw him he was looking up reviews since he's a seafood lover.
The hotel is slightly off the beaten track, but the price reflects this, and we were more than happy with all aspects of it.

Room Tip: Our room was adequate, until we shopped, lol! Seriously, I imagine they would all be similar. A/C i...

The location is not bad (about 10 or 15 minutes walk from Old Street station; fairly quiet area, not too touristy, "feels safe"). The pool and breakfast buffet are nice.

The wi-fi (included in the price) is a bit of a pain to use because you have to open a browser and click through some junk before anything else works --- every time you leave the hotel and come back in. The sockets are mostly too low over the furniture, so we had to unplug the trouser press to plug our multi-way charger in.

Our family room consisted of 3 single beds (a double and a single would have been better) and was clean. The rooms are obviously old (a bit of rust here and there in the bathroom, for example) --- that doesn't bother me, but some people might object.

The concierge was very helpful; he stored our luggage until we could check in and recommended the Kings Bakery nearby for lunch (we really liked it).

It seemed quite expensive to me, but I guess not too bad for a decent hotel in London.

The location of this hotel isn't bad as it's only a 10 minute walk to the nearest underground.

As i walked in I though the lobby area was nice which therefore highered my expectations for my room, which was perhaps smaller than I had imagined.

Breakfast was great and there was a good variety.

Stayed at the Thistle, Barbican for just one night as part of a hen party. Staff wonderfully helpful and friendly, especially Enara on reception. We asked for a fan as the annexe part of the hotel doesn't have air con, though the windows are openable. The buffet breakfast was a superb treat; everything fresh and delicious. Having smaller trays of the hot food, which were replenished often, meant that food was used quickly and not hanging about getting tepid. Room spacious enough for two ladies to spread out paraphernalia comfortably. Slept well. Would highly recommend - close to Old Street tube station, and a bus stop right on the doorstep.

Room Tip: Ask for the highest storey for fresh air and quiet

Booked because of proximity to Moorfields Eye Hospital. Stayed two nights. Used the restaurant for all meals - all good but have eaten better. Hotel is overdue a refit and it shows. From some angles outside, it does not even look like a hotel! It is difficult to find from Old Street Tube Station.
Rooms are very warm and we opened windows to cool down and get fresh air as air con not the best. However, at midnight, we were awoken by deliveries!! Do not accept a room overlooking Hull Street. Staff very pleasant and helpful Smell of sewage in ground floor lift lobby.

Room Tip: Do not accept a room overlooking Hull Street!

I was pleased to read that overall you enjoyed your stay with us .
We appreciate your constructive comments . in regards to the smell near the lift this was caused by a blocked drain outside of the hotel which unfortunately took us a little while to find for which I
do apologise.

We booked the hotel for 1 night as we had an early appointment at Moorfields Eye Hospital the next day. The hotel is only about 6 minute walk. Not easy to find though and no one in the hospital knew where it was. I called the hotel and got directions. Prompt pleasant check in. Nice clean room. Quiet and very comfortable. Would of liked air con as it was very warm. Hospital appointment didn't go as planned and we ended up spending 3 nights here. We used room service twice for dinner and the food was excellent. Overall a great hotel
