“A Thorn of a Thistle In my Opinion”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

I would agree with other reviews that this hotel is clean and tidy and is a great location. Perhaps we were just very unlikely to find an assortment of staff who whilst very pleasant as individuals had little or no idea how to successfully offer hospitality to its customers. We arrived on the Saturday of Gay Pride (unplanned) thus had to walk to the hotel from the outskirts of the square, we were also walking in torrential rain (also unplanned). By the time we arrived at the hotel we were not just wet but absolutely soaking. As a matter of human kindness let alone hotel hospitality one would imagine that at least towels would be brought promptly. An hour later a couple of hand towels to dry 4 of us were offered. During that hour we had tried to order an aperitif. The order was brought incorrectly TWICE and an order for olives had not arrived within that hour and we had to cancel them. Nothing was done to compensate for this 'Fawlty Towers' experience. No concern at all was expressed about our welfare or comfort. Our stay was in order to accomodate a concert at the 02. Returning at just after midnight the doors were locked and we had to hold our room keys up to the window for the night staff to inspect them. This is humiliating and certainly not what I would expect for over £200 for the room alone. And on to the room. One of the rooms was of an average size and the other room which was equi priced was tiny. A shower but no bath. This was not explained at the point of booking or when we were eventually allowed to access our rooms. I am partially disabled and hence found the lack of space in the room uncomfortable and difficult to cope with. The rooms were clean and nicely decorated. Maintenance and housekeeping therefore - Good Job! The customer service was dire. I would not recommend this hotel. I would not stay at this hotel again. The experience was so disappointing I would hesitate to book another Thistle lest it be the same. I would rather have a slightly tatty room and excellent customer service any day of the week.

Room Tip: I would specify you need a bath - as I suspect these would be in the larger of the standard bedrooms

The Royal Trafalgar Hotel is ideally located near Trafalgar Square close to Covent Garden and Leicester Square. The hotel is in excellent condition and has lots of amenities except parking. We chose to not drive in London and had no problems getting around with buses and taxis. The staff was very attentive and helpful. When we return to London, we will definitely stay at the Thistle Royal Trafalgar Hotel again.

Room Tip: We had an Executive King room. It was reasonably large and very comfortable.

Located on a side street off Trafalgar Square couldn't find a more central yet quiet location if you tried. I stayed here for four nights in June. The staff from reception to chamber maids were delightful - extremely helpful, friendly and polite. My standard room was immaculate and although not large, all one could wish for in a central. London hotel. The well designed bathroom had a spacious rainforest shower. My only complaint is that it is almost impossible to close the doors to the rooms quietly. They bang shut, and have no soundproofing so that you hear every exit and entrance to neighboring rooms.
I chose the hotel for its location, and during my stay there walked everywhere - museums, theaters, restaurants, concerts. The hotel has its own restaurant, but there are plenty of restaurants nearby, as well as branches of Marks & Spencer and Selfridges food stores five minutes walk away where you can buy fresh salads, fruit, sandwiches and much more to make up your own picnics. St. Jame's Park complete with lawns, lakes, ducks and swans, the ideal spot for a picnic, is also few minutes walk away.
The internet access is free throughout the hotel.
As a woman traveling alone I felt cared for and safe.

Stayed at this hotel for a celebratory break and couldn't have chosen a better central location hotel. From the time we arrived in a taxi there was a gentleman to greet us and help with luggage and the receptionist was first class and informed us we had been upgraded as it was our anniversary. The room was very clean and bathroom had all that you required. Tea, coffee, safe, tv, hairdryer, ironing board and iron was provided as was free wi fi. Our room was at the back of the hotel and was very quiet and with the large and comfortable bed a good night sleep was had. As for the proximity of the hotel it was perfect we walked everywhere we wanted to go theatre, Covent Garden, China Town etc. The lady on the front desk was very helpful helping us to go further afield by bus as my husband won't use the underground. Thank you Thistle and would like to say your staff are a credit to you.

The hotel is in a gem of a location close to Picadilly, Leicester Square, Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square. Museums, restaurants and theatres on your doorstep.

Most impressive was the level of customer service which was really beyond the call of duty. The front desk staff were ever friendly, charming, happy and helpful.

Thank you for all you did for us to make our 25th Anniversary visit such a treat!

Fantastic room, large queen size bed, excellent facilities all round.

One of the best places I have ever stayed and I will certainly come back.

My cousin and I first time in Europe! Upon arrival the service was pleasant! The room was clean and beds were very soft and comfortable. We had no problem sleeping giving we were in a whole new time zone! As we looked outside our room window... We seen a beautiful big park and some building sculptures as well...at times our room did appear a bit chilly, but staff was there to fix what was needed. The hotel had easy internet access, which was a plus to help us communicate with family from back home in the US! The staff was very helpful with giving us directions whenever we went out! The hotel is close by a strip of souvenir stores and places to eat! Great location! Anything we needed was at our service! As young women out of the country for the first time.. We felt safe and respected! Loved the stay!

What a gem of a hotel. Smack bang in the hub of London. We loved our three day stay in this wonderful hotel.
The front office staff went above & beyond in hospitality. The hotel was very clean and rooms had ample space. Soooo quiet. Hard to believe you were sleeping in a busy city.
One block away from Piccadilly Circus, one block away from Trafalgar Square & the National Gallery. One block away from the beginning of the original hop on, hop off tour bus.
Access to good eateries. Great for walking to various tourist points.
Great memories of London & thanks to the staff of Royal Trafalgar Thistle Hotel. Would highly recommend this little find to everyone. Go forth & enjoy!!
