“Afternoon Tea for Two”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 March 2013

We visited the Danubius for afternoon tea following a voucher offer on a website.
The location is great, we got the tube to Baker Street and had a wander around the Sherlock Holmes shop before going through a rather pleasant part of London to get to the hotel.
From the outside it doesn't look like much, however looks can be deceiving and in this case they were.
We entered and asked the receptionist where to go for afternoon tea, she asked if we were checking in...so again I asked where to go for afternoon tea, we were directed towards the bar. Maybe could do with listening better or learning English better, unsure of which. Thankfully this is the most negative comment I have to make!
In the bar we were directed towards a table and our voucher was taken and a couple of glasses of prosecco brought over to us.
The room was lovely and bright and warm which we admired whilst waiting for our afternoon tea. As we have given up meat for lent we requested a vegetarian option in advance, and I reminded the waitress of this also. She asked if that included salmon, alas yes, I consider salmon to not be in the vegetarian spirit! But anyhoo she telephones up to the chef to ensure this excluded that salmon option. When the afternoon tea arrived we were greeted with 4 scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream, a selection of roasted mediterranean vegetable, cucumber and egg sandwiches. The top plate consisted of something which resembled the ice-cream shape of a whippy cone covered in chocolate-intriguing!
The sandwiches were really good. We were a little nervous as most restaurants struggle with vegetarians and throw cheese and pickle at them and run away, so this was quite a refreshing dose of imagination. The sandwiches were very good, however the bread was a little dry in places and would have been nice if it had been fresh.
The strange not whippy not ice cream things, were like a grainy mousse covered in chocolate with a soggy base, these were not great and if there was one thing to be improved this would be it. The scones however were quite the delight and saved the whippy things. Fresh, beautiful cream and pleasant jam. It would be good if the jam had more fruit in to really compliment the delightful cream. We each had a pot of tea and sweeteners were available upon request. During the meal we finished the inclusive glass of prosecco and another was brought straight over. This was very unusual as places will usually charge for a second glass, however it was very much noticed and appreciated that here they didn't. Very much offered a welcoming and that they wanted to you to enjoy the experience. This was added to by the live musical offering which really was just perfect.
The restaurant and bar filled up a lot whilst we were there with many other people also having afternoon tea, so they are doing something right and bar the top plate, don't think they could do much better. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming and conducive to an afternoon tea environment.
I found the waiting staff very kind and attentive and I really did enjoy my afternoon out. Living in London, I would definitely go back again and recommend it to others.

From the outside the hotel is particularly unattractive with the style of a 1970s tower block but inside it has been refurbished to a good standard. My room was very clean and comfortable with a modern bathroom, TV and tea making facilities. The staff were all very friendly and helpful although many struggled with English. Food in the restaurant was a bit hit and miss - great salad bar at lunch time but wouldn't revisit the Hungarian dinner menu where a delicious goulash was spoiled by a revolting suet concoction.

Stayed for one night when attending a cricket tournament at Lords. We got a family room rate that, for the type of hotel was good at £150 for 3.

The hotel is good quality with surroundings in the public areas that reflect that. The room was small, but not any more so than I would have expected for a place like this. I have stayed in other hotels in London with smaller! I did find the room not to be overheated, a real bugbear of mine.

Service was good. I had a problem with my keycard that was fixed immediately and a member of the concierge staff came up with me to ensure it was all ok and to save me having to make a trip back to reception.

We didn't eat in the hotel in the evening, but the breakfast was good as well, without finding the buffet overcooked which again seems to happen all too regularly.

Overpriced? Perhaps, but I felt you got exactly what you paid for in this case. You can certainly get far less for the same price in many other hotels in the Capital.

I would recommend it but only if you get a deal on the room rate.

We had a really great stay at this superb London Hotel. Great location difficult to believe one is in London, alongside Regents Park and the Oval cricket ground. The St John’s wood and Baker Street tube stations are both a short walk, the high street of St John’s Wood is just so English - loved it! Nice walk along the canal and in Regents Park. The hotel itself is fabulous, great customer service, superb restaurant, Minsky’s had the most awesome restaurant with live music and the breakfasts are divine. We can highly recommend this hotel for a stay in London. London rocks, Thanks danubius!

We arrived late afternoon on Tuesday 5th March , the cheerful greeting from the door man and offers to carry our bags were most welcome after the long journey. Gave the car keys to the consierge and he parked it securely in the hotel car park.. Beautiful lobby , freindly and informitive reception staff. Third floor standard double room, very comfy , t.v. , tea making facility, plenty of drawers and space for clothes . The bathroom is small but we're not big , so no problem .We had breakfast in Minskys New York Diner , great selection and great service, when the staff smile and make conversation with you it makes the dining experiance so much nicer .The hotel is well placed for getting into town, just across the road is the bus stop , number 13 is the one we caught every day , 2 miles to the west end ! We will stay here again .

Poor communication of guest tarrif by reception to bar and restaurant causing customer embarrassment as staff didn't trust guests.
Having to sign disclaimer to use iron and ironing table, do they think we're stupid and not know how to use??
Waiting for 45mins in bar to be served and waiters comments were" everyone is waiting" !!!! Not even an apology.

Website advises recently refurbished rooms, don't know where they were as our rooms were tired dated.
Wouldn't recommend this hotel and it doesn't offer a friendly welcome to London.

Firstly allow us to apologize profusely for failing to meet expectations on this occasion.

I am sorry you witnessed failure in communication within our team embers. I can assure you that our managers are looking into this issue and will take appropriate action immediately.
Furthermore, I would like to apologise for the answer given to you by our team during the long wait as this was very insensitive and our Food and beverage manager has been informed and will carry out the relevant training.
I can assure you the service that you witnessed is a complete exception to our usual high standards. Please allow us the opportunity to welcome you back to the hotel and provide you with the level of service you are accustom to.

The hotel rooms were filthy dirty with broken windowns. the restaurants were absolutely terrible and boiling hot. i strongly recommend that you do not stay in this hotel. i even rang to complain and got an answer phone and no one got back to me. it is very disorganised. the lady on the room service phone could not understand any English and I could not get her to understand that i wanted to order some cheese and biscuits with some fresh fruit and a glass of red wine !!!!

Dear Guest

May I take this opportunity to sincerely apologise that you didn’t have an enjoyable stay with us.
We are taking all your comments very seriously and have already addressed the communication issue to the relevant managers in regards to your room service order as obviously this shouldn’t happen.
We do have a Manager on Duty every evenings to ensure the smooth running of the operation and service at the hotel and I am sure the Duty Manager would have looked into your complaint about the broken window in the room with immediate attention had he been contacted by our switchboard operator available 24 hour / 7 via our blip system. However, we do appreciate that you did leave a voicemail message and this should have also been acknowledged and answered so we can only apologise tthat his wasn’t the case on that day.( should you be able to let us to know your room number we will certainly look into the broken window if not already done by our maintenance team) . We are also investigating as to why the Restaurant was so warm on that evening.
Please allow us the opportunity to welcome you back to the hotel and provide you with the level of service you are accustom to in a four star hotel as I can assure you the failure in customer service was an exception on that day.
Should you give the opportunity to welcome you back in the future, please contact myself directly. I will be happy to do everything it takes to make your next visit with us a successful one.

Yours Sincerely,
Patrice Max
