“Great location, average hotel”
Reviewed 19 October 2013

We stayed here for 5 days in September. On arrival early in the morning we were Lucky that our rooms were ready. However bad views and our room seemed to have a water problem coming from the bathroom as the carpet was soaked.
We moved rooms and the second room was bigger and a lot better on the 7 th floor.
The rooms are small but ok. Furniture tired and in need of an upgrade. The beds not very comfortable. Mattresses old and springy. Bathroom average with shower over the bath which soaked the whole floor when you showered.
Service ok. Concierge useless - one guy working there with loads of people queuing. Also I asked for help with a few things and got nowhere.

However this said the hotel's location was absolutely fantastic. Right near oxford street, st. Christopher's etc. also near all the embassies and and beautiful grosvenor sq park. Also bicycle hire located right outside the hotel. On your way walking up to oxford street great little side streets with little cafés etc.

All in all the hotel was perfect for what we needed. Could be better but was fine and locational amazing!

We stayed here for three nights. Our 'club room' and bathroom were surprisingly large, and access to the Club Lounge on the seventh floor for breakfast, a glass of wine, etc., was a huge plus. The staff was quite pleasant. But the rooms are a bit tired, and our view of some ugly part of the physical plant, with no street, tree, or touch of green in sight - a view shared by all rooms on the interior side of the building - was grim indeed. We might have felt better about the hotel, the grey and rainy weather, and our entire experience if we had had a view of lovely Grosvenor Square instead, and if we had been coming and going from that side of the building, rather than through the dim rear entrance to which private cars and taxis are directed. Also, the hair dryer and its identical replacement were terrible - a small thing, perhaps, but a small thing that was an irritation at the start of every day. We would not stay here again.

Room Tip: Insist on a room that does not overlook the mechanical system on the roof of the first floor. Be su...

We had an appointment at the US Embassy so stayed here mainly because it is across the street. Location was by far the most important factor but we were very pleasantly surprised with the hotel.
The style is all very classic sophistication with the staff to match. The are very polite and efficient but not too over the top.
The room we stayed in was well appointed, not overly large but had everything we needed.
There is parking on site but it is managed by NCP so there is a charge. If you stay at the hotel they pay the first £25 of any parking which is reasonable.
The hotel was very clean and breakfast was just what was required.
Would definately stay here again even if I wasnt visiting the US Embassy!

Good points: great location, clean well-appointed rooms, good breakfast
Not so good points: over-priced for a mediocre hotel, indifferent service, Wi-Fi poor and not available in all rooms.
There are better hotels at more acceptable (London) prices and certainly really good hotels for the same money.

Room Tip: If you need Wi-Fi sort it out at check-in as its hard to change afterwards.

I love this hotels location, the piano bar is vibrant and lively, and the breakfast has a great choice. The worst thing, is the price, as the rooms are in need of a massive overhaul, they are all very tired, especially for its 5* rating and cost per night. But I do love the hotels vibe and the area is superb, right in the heart of Mayfair and not too far from the West End and the shopping streets.
I stay regular and the location makes it easy to get to by car, and parking is cheap for London.
Well worth pushing the boat out for a few nights, but they must sort out the decor soon....

Room Tip: Ask for a room over looking the Berkeley Square.

I was here for a week on work and couldn't get my usual hotel in Mayfair.
I actually got a decent rate so am not rating the hotel too harshly as other rates in the area were out of control, it was Fashion Week.
Room was OK, facilities are OK, gym a bit ho hum with a lack of gear in my view.
My big problem was internet and I just couldn't get wireless in my room which meant I had to go the bar (no great ordeal there to be honest) to do my email type work however, they never fixed the router in my area despite my repeated calls (although I did give up after two days).
I thought the staff through out the hotel were great. When I checked in another man was also doing the same and he was greeted by name and engaging conversation from one of the front desk staff who wasn't serving him even though he hadn't been there for a few months - nice.

This is a hotel to avoid. Much better options nearby, which are better priced and significantly nicer. It is overpriced and charges internet per device per day (a huge disincentive). This is a 4-star property with pretentious to be a 5-star property, but there are several reasons why this only got a 1-star rating. The most obvious is that it is extremely poor value. This hotel was booked by somebody else for me, and cost 300 pounds/night (approx $500/night). A quick search on Expedia gave the average for a 4-star hotel in Mayfair at 175 pound/night.

Secondly, the actually property is "tired". This can be seen in lots of details, and a few examples are in the enclosed photos. This is not the standard of a 4-star hotel (let alone a 5-star one). Additionally, the service was mediocre overall, with the front-office and reception staff being very average, while some of the others were better . A minor point, but a symptomatic one, was that there was no soap in my bathroom when I arrived and it took 3 separate calls to get any delivered. This just typifies the standards. Also, it was interesting to hear the reception staff try and sell "upgrades" to new arrivals, and this is clearly part of the approach this chain takes.

Thirdly, this hotel is one of those that charges 10 pounds/day (approx $16/day) for 24 hour internet access. Note that this is PER DEVICE. As we had 4 devices in our room this meant that to utilize them we had to leave the hotel and find a free WiFi network at a coffee shop. This approach is simply not acceptable in today's wired society, and all hotels that charge for internet access are ones I usually boycott.

Overall, therefore, while the location is good, the hotel should be avoided unless you can get rates below 200 pounds per night (approx $300/day) AND they alter their WiFi policy. The hotel also needs upgrading and detailing. Interestingly, after writing this review, I noticed that of the previous 8 postings on TripAdvisor, 6 were a 1-star or 2-stars only, with many of these low rating being from Senior and Top contributors, so this consensus seems pretty consistent. Management doesn't seem to care, since there were no responses to any of these issues since May 2013.

As an aside, I am also increasingly concerned by TripAdvisor's rankings. This particular hotel advertises widely on the internet, and I note that the higher rankings are mostly older. Call me cynical, but it is an experience I have had before with TripAdvisor whereby newer rankings are not rated more highly, but are considered equivalent to those from some years ago. Given that this is a company that likely pays TripAdvisor for higher profiles, it seems very inappropriate that it got a "Certificate of Excellence" in 2013, when it has been so poorly rated for at least the past 3 months.
