They had an off-season lunch offer: 2 courses for 12£ and 3 courses for 15£. My daughter with sever lactose intolerance couldn't have the starer: Scottish salmon thing (which was alright with the orange peel flavoured sauce) so she got fabulous salmon tartar instead. And she was ready to buy an 8£ dessert and take the 2 courses offer, but they changed vanilla ice cream with balsamico marinated apricots for sorbet with the delicious apricots, so she got the same deal! And the place was nice, a bit clinc with iron chairs, but airy and stylish with big pictures of famous film stars.
And again, my alias has nothing to do with this restaurant but all with Hotel Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon!

We visited this restaurant on a weekend trip to London. Our friends, who are based in London, had booked it for the Saturday night at 8.30pm. We were ravenous and as we walked along Old Brompton Road, past all the cosy little bistro's and restaurants overflowing with people, our anticipation was building! On arrival, however, we were shocked to find that there were only FOUR diners in the restaurant apart from ourselves....immediately we feared the worst!

The 'welcome' was underwhelming but we chose our food from the very limited menu and set down to eat. Unfortunately, our fears were well founded, and the food and service, were abysmal. Our friends were very apologetic and we all laughed it off but there was no doubt that the evening had been spoilt! When you are sitting in a vacuum, eating food JUST because it is there, the dynamic of the evening is ruined!

HOWEVER it was our friends turn to pay and they decided they didn't want to make a fuss and paid the bill without question. I certainly would NOT have paid however it wasn't my decision. I think the bill totalled around £200 for four people with one bottle of wine.
I find it puzzling that, in such a competitive market, these places still survive. Give it a very wide berth!

This small, cleanly-modern restaurant a few blocks from the South Kensington station in the university district served us a spectacular meal at a very reasonable price. The staff is clearly French, and many of the other diners were conversing in that language. We started with the onion soup, and as that was prepared we were served some salt-crusted rolls with fresh butter and an amuse bouche of pumpkin-citrus soup in a tiny, narrow glass. The nightly menu was short, half a dozen appetizers - including fois gras - and half a dozen entrees, but it was difficult to chose. I had perfectly prepared scallops with a savory orange sauce, and my husband took the lamb with potatoes fontine and garlic. For dessert we shared a tiny, perfectly baked dark chocolate fondant served with a scoop of mint ice cream on the side. The competent, young wait staff made us feel very welcome. Our price for two meals, without wine, was 55 pounds, including tip. I would break my rule about never going back to the same place on the same visit to return and dine here again this weekend.

During a recent stay in London we use Google maps to find restaurants within walking distance from where we were staying. Choose the "Bistro K" after looking at their website. Turned out to be a good choice.

Easy to find on Brompton Road in South Kensington. Stylish but reasonable decor and ambiance. Welcoming staff, knowledgable and confident wine steward, interesting menu.

Food from starters through dessert was considered excellent by the entire party (4 of us)
we had foie gras, tomatoes and cheese, duck confit, lamb and risotto and excellent desserts.

We spent about $150 for two including cocktails and wine. Would definitely return.
