Holiday Inn London Bloomsbury
Ranked #387 of 1,081 Hotels in London
Reviewed 11 June 2014

We are creatures of habit staying in the same hotel and even the same room when visiting London. However on this occasion 'our hotel' was full booked and we had to look elsewhere. The Holiday Inn Bloomsbury turned out to be a first class alternative. The Hotel is in an ideal location for theatre goers and visitors to Covent Garden and Oxford Street. It was spotlessly clean throughout, the staff very friendly and attentive and the breakfast was excellent. The only criticism is that the bath was very small and my knees were under my chin when having a soak. Parking is available in the adjacent multi-storey car park at reasonable prices and there is a super shopping area within yards of the hotel. A short walk away, through a lovely park is the Foundling Museum which is a must visit.

Let's start with the Concierge - absolute top man, knowledgeable, smart, anticipates your needs excellently.
Close second, the Reception staff, very on-the-ball, and very efficient - just a word for the Antipodean lady who thinks we're all guys - we aren't, we're guests, and in fact to you Miss, we're Mr and Mrs xxxxx, and we like to be asked if everything was OK about our stay.
Stay was pretty OK, from the early check-in, all the way through.
Observations - their double bed are super-skimpy...maybe OK for one person or two fell-runners, otherwise ask for a Queen room or a twin.
Also rooms on the inside of the quadrangle are very quiet - those on there outside have significant traffic noise.
Breakfast can be a scrum, not the hotel's fault, and food is fine - it's just busy.
It is a pretty old building but generally well-maintained.
Its local shopping arcade/market is great, and the pub in the opposite corner of the square is very good, an alternative to the (very well-run) hotel bar.

I was here for a business meeting and an extra night of leisure. Check in was slow because there was one person ahead of me and two people at the desk. Somehow this translated into slow check in. Friendly though. And during the day, since I didn't have internet access because the hotel charges for it (and it is too slow to be useful) I asked the front desk for directions and the weather and they were happy to oblige. Breakfast is full English and included. Decent smoothie too. The room was modest size, clean, fully equipped, room darkening shades, hair dryer (in the drawer), TV (nothing will be on...), and I got twin beds instead of the double ordered. Ample plugs. The bottom line is that this place is passable. I wouldn't mind staying here again. But for a similar price I have stayed in other hotels nearby that have internet included and that works (important for me on business travel and since my cell often doesn't get data easily here) and are at least as good. The AC worked well.

Stayed here in Marc 2014 on business, paid for by my employer. After asking at reception to be placed in a quiet room, I was given a room on the 5th floor. I found out, to my horror, as I tried to get to sleep later that night, that this room backs on to the lifts. I therefore heard the rumble of the lifts and the opening of the doors all night. And by all night I mean all night. By this point I was in my pjs and in bed so didn't ring reception to complain. When I checked out reception asked if I'd had a good night and when I said I did not and explained. She claimed she didn't know about the noise but I've read previous reviews and there are similar comments to mine so I reckon this was just a pack of lies. Ended up spending all day at work exhausted which completely defeated the object of my employer paying to put me up for the night in the first place. Only good thing about this place was that it was clean and breakfast was good. I've stayed here previously for work and it's been OK but I was so annoyed by this I doubt I'll be staying here again and will instead ask my work to put me up elsewhere.

Room Tip: Ask to be placed in a room away from the lifts.

Large hotel but located perfectly for business as well as leisure, the room was rather small but since that seems to be the London standard I can hardly complain.
I did not use any services besides laundry and information and have no reason to complain.
Reception was friendly as where the other employees I came into contact with, overall I would rate this hotel more than adequate unless you plan a romantic getaway.

We attempted to check in early but there was no rooms available. They happily took our bags and asked us to return at 2pm. We did, and there seemed to be the same issue. Gary recognised us (from our first attempt) and interfered, even offering a complementary upgrade to an executive suite on the sixth floor - thank you to Gary on reception.

On our way to the room we spotted some housekeeping staff busy at work, but friendly enough to say hello. The room was nice, spacious and comfortable. The view was nothing exciting, just more hotel rooms - but we didn't mind that. We ordered room service, sides are small, mains are huge! Hot and tasty, but very overpriced. Breakfast was very good too - usual buffet style. I asked for decafe tea and got coffee - I asked for it to be changed and she said they only have decafe coffee. Slight misunderstanding but I was ok with the tea. Never had this issue at a Holiday Inn before though.

Hotel is in a lovely area, even has a spot of outdoor space! It is a 15min walk to Euston and a 2min walk to Russell Square which offers great access to attractions in London.

Having never stayed in a Holiday Inn before, we were pleasantly surprised. The hotel itself was very nice and had a lot more to offer than some other local chain hotels, in terms of facilities. It is well situated, being within walking distance of Euston aswell as several tube stations, the nearest being Russell Square.

The room was pleasant enough, though a little on the small side - especially when we ere getting ready, with the ironing board, clothes and toiletries etc out. Found the bed very comfortable, and liked the touch of having two sets off labelled pillows: firm and soft.

Not exactly a negative, but there was a notice advising you to leave unwanted towels in the bath and unused towels folded on the shelf so the maid knew which to take - we followed this, leaving them all folded on the shelf, yet the maid took them all?

The breakfast was great. Lots on offer - full English, toast, cereals, cured meats, cheese etc. We did have to ask for our tea twice - having been brought a pot of lemon green tea instead.

We found the reception staff to be a little rude, which is probably why the score is so low. On checking in the receptionist was brisk and to the point, and again at check out, the guy who was manning the baggage storage room, wasn't exactly friendly. Made me feel a little uncomfortable coming and going for the rest of the stay.

Will probably not be coming back, though was a nice stay.
