Holiday Inn London Mayfair
Ranked #389 of 1,081 Hotels in London
Reviewed 31 January 2012

My family and have visited London at least once a year for more then 40 years and have stayed at a great many hotels. The Mayfair Holiday Inn is the best by far. Virtually all central London is in easy walking distance. Also the tube station, which is a 2 minute walk, has 3 different lines that cover all of London without the need to change trains. The hotel serves the needs of both tourists and business visitors. #1 in my view.

Stayed here last night on 2012 promo deal - book on 20/12/2011 and pay £20.12

Delighted with the stay - friendly and helpful checkin - PCR Platinum status acknowledged Oon chcekin and I was offered me an upgrade to King Executive room
Very nice room - quiet - comfortable with sofa, 2 armchairs, desk, Complimentary mineral water, fruit juice and chocolates. Usual tea and coffee. Toiletries, bathrobes and slippers. Jacuzzi bath.

I had to smile at the published tariff behind the desk though - £585

Only negative was the bar prices
Whisky £6 single + £1.60 for dash of lemonade + 10% service
I know I was in Mayfair but still a bit steep

All in all - a good nght though - especially for £20.12!

This is a comfortable and reasonably priced hotel in a really great location in a city where accommodation is never ever cheap. The rooms are modestly sized but not unbearably small, the beds are comfortable, there's a bath (I can't live without a bath !), the breakfasts are excellent and the location can't be beaten, a few steps from Piccadilly and the tube station which takes you direct to Heathrow. Shepherd's market is a short stroll away for interesting eating, the best shopping in London is at your doorstep and if you want to go to the other areas of shopaholic heaven, the buses go practically past the door. Highly recommended for medium travellers who want value for money and not to blow the budget. There was no traffic noise.

Room Tip: A room facing the back lane means no traffic noise.

The location is great - that's for sure. But my experience was not as positive as this from other reviewers. In short
- I have received one of the most impersonal and unfriendly check in experiences ever (several hundred stays at hotels), even being the holder of a Platinum ICHG card. No eye contact made at all by staff who checked me in, not a single smile, not even any apologies when I realised that the check-in form I had signed wasn't mine but someone else's.
- Room was fine. But I was very dissatisfied finding the stuff I left in the room's bin earlier when returning to the hotel late afternoon on day 2. And although the bed looked OK when seen from the top, the picture was different when looking at its side as I found it to be in the exact same condition I left it when leaving the room in the morning (bed sheets undone). And the mattress would certainly deserve to be changed
- Very unpleasant smell in the bathroom but had no time to change room at check-in - fortunately this seemed to vanish later on
- 2 separate water taps (cold and hot) for the washbasin. How do you expect anyone to have a proper had wash? Opened the hot one - nothing came out. So opened it further and further again until extremely hot burning water finally came out of it after some 10+ seconds! I was very lucky not to be badly burned and used towels to remove water from the floor as the flow was then very powerful... Note that it always took time for hot water to come subsequently, but I was then aware of this
- Ordered poached eggs on a brown toast for my first breakfast- got them on a white slice of bread instead. Isn't the devil in the details????

Not saying this is a hotel to avoid at all costs - don't get my wrong. Just saying that I will not return there unless this were to be the only place I could stay for one of my future business trips to London. Some others seem to have had much more pleasant experiences than mine fortunately!

Hello Sir,
Sometimes it all seems to go awry and curiously for no other reason than it just went wrong on that day, at that time and it happen to be to you. This of course does not in any way excuses the behaviour of our receptionist and she was identified as was the room with the faulty tap, and steps taken to ensure that the poor service you received will not be repeated.
I am very sorry that you did have the same positive experience as so many of our guests do and I hope you will give us another chance to get it right. Please come and see us again and when you do ask for Sarah or any Duty Manager who will ensure that you are served in the manner you have a right to expect.

This hotel is perfectly positioned and very friendly staff. There is a tube station just 50 metres away (Green Park) and easy access to all major train stations.
Central location was great, can walk across the park to Buckingham Palace in 10 mins, or walk to China town, Piccadilly Circus and all the great spots with no hastle.
Well recommended, and will stay there again.
There is a good bar downstairs that shows all the football games if your into that (I am but went out to other pubs nearby) so all is covered.
