“Fantastic Hotel with Perfect Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 October 2010

We recently stayed at this hotel while visiting London. We lived in London for two years so wanted a hotel that was in a good location and had nice rooms.

This hotel has both. The hotel is an old historic building that has been beautifully converted to this Marriott Hotel. Our room had a view over the Thames to Big Ben and Parliament and the London Eye. We could easily walk to Waterloo station in less than 5 minutes or it was right on Westminster Bridge and we could walk across to Big Ben and St James Park easily.

It was a great place to easily see Westminster and central london.

The hotel is huge. The location is right in the middle of a tourist mob scene. If you like huge crowds right outside your door, this is your place.

The Pros:
Great location for Parliament/Big Ben, London Eye. Easy access to the on-off boat and bus. Well cared for property, good sized rooms for London. Pool and work out room very nice. They have a Concierge Lounge (but it's terribly understaffed, mobbed by guests and they run out of everything constantly.)

The Cons:
Very big, completely anonymous hotel. You are just another body to the staff and management. Unfortunately by contrast, we'd just come from a fantastic experience at a smaller hotel in Paris, where we were treated as truly valued guests. I'd contacted County Hall Rooms Manager three months in advance to explain a simple rooms request since one of our kids has special needs. Was told in writing our request should be no problem. When we got to County Hall, no one had the slightest idea what we had requested. I produced the emails, was told the computer reallocated our rooms - oh well....no human beings involved. We were begrudgingly offered an alternative and then lectured twice during our stay by different managers that we needed to be grateful for their attempt to accommodate us. My husband is Platinum, we paid for the stay (i.e. didn't use points) and were treated like we were an annoyance. With such a huge property, I guess each guest is just that - an annoyance to be shuffled in and out to make room for the next warm body.

The concierge desk is moderately helpful but be prepared to wait a long time due to huge crowds of guests. And don't expect help if you email questions in advance trying to plan your trip.

In fairness, it is not a bad hotel. Our experience with their management just ruined what could have been a great stay. We were not trying to be difficult with our rooms request - traveling with a special needs child is challenging. Usually, as a Platinum member, management makes some basic effort to be courteous and helpful. If they don't, it's not a big deal. But this is the first time in many years of family travel I felt management was beyond unhelpful and almost rude.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your feedback and for completing an online review of your visit to County Hall in August.

It is clear on this occasion that the Hotel team failed to provide a suitable room allocation as discussed prior to your arrival. Whilst I understand some efforts were made to offer alternatives to you and your family, I appreciate that these rooms remained unsuitable for the duration of your visit.

We do hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to London so that we may restore your faith in County Hall and subsequently Marriott Hotels. As a valued and loyal Platinum Elite guest, it is disappointing to learn that on this visit you did not receive the levels of service we strive to provide.

Kind regards, Michael

A wonderful old building that for many year was the City Hall is now a wonderful unique hotel. The location couldn't be better right across the Thames from Parliament Buildings and Big Ben and within a hundred metres of the tube station and many various bus stops. An excellent location for walking or touring around London.

We stayed for 5 nights using Marriott reward points. We had a room just down the hall from the concierge lounge. There was a great view of the river and Big Ben. It was odd that in such a large room, there was only one window. Only had one neighbor, so the room was fantastically quiet. We stayed with our 2 teenage children. There was plenty of room for all of us with 2 queen beds and a huge walk in closet, which turned into the changing room when the bathroom was occupied. We used the pool 3 out of the 5 days. It was great to have a place to cool off after the hot days. The hotel was convenient for the London Eye and the river cruise. Overall, a wonderful experience! We had dinner one night at the Italian restaurant out the back door, which was very loud but tasty.

We held our wedding reception at the Marriott County Hall in October -- and the staff throughout the hotel and restaurant could not have been better and the experience was perfect.

The County Hall restaurant overlooks the Thames, and each time we've eaten there the food has been fantastic -- great attention to detail and an imaginative menu.

We stayed in a suite on the second floor, overlooking Westminster Bridge. It was one of the largest suites I've stayed in, and beautifully appointed throughout. We had a surprisingly good night's sleep and the late-ish checkout (12pm standard) made for a much more relaxed start to the the next day.

Breakfast was good -- the usual hotel breakfast, but again well-executed.

It's not cheap -- but with a view of Parliament and the London Eye, as well as being a beautifully-appointed hotel in a landmark building, you can't expect cheap.

Highly recommended, just for the attitude of the staff throughout our experience with them. I've stayed at some brilliant Marriotts and some really lacklustre ones. This one tops the list.

The location of The London Marriott County Hall is sensational with the majority of rooms overlooking the heart of London; Houses of Westmister, Big Ben and The River Thames. We stayed in one of the exclusive balcony rooms (pay the extra for an ultimate experience) the rooms have high ceilings and are spacious with a bed that I would describe as like sleeping on a cloud. The cleanliness is excellent and the bathroom a good size with a fantastic shower.
As if this is not enough the staff are fantastic at every turn from Aaron and Abundio in Concierge and Nick in reception to hskp staff in the corridors everyone is friendly and wants to make your day.
I highly, highly recommend anyone to stay at this wonderful hotel which is for me flying the Marriott flag.

Before and after our cruise, we stayed in London. For five days before our cruise, and one day after, we toured London from our base camp at the Marriott London County Hall hotel. Here are my experiences.

The hotel’s primary hit factor is it’s location, just across the Westminster Bridge from the Houses of Parliament, literally at the base of the London Eye, near shopping and tourist locations and two tube stops. Very convenient. Some rooms have a view of the Thames or Houses of Parliament, including the infamous clock tower that houses Big Ben.

Location was also a problem, somewhat, because for-hire drivers (except Black Taxi drivers, who are pros) seem to have a hard time finding the entrance, on the left right across the bridge. Twice, our driver from Heathrow drove right by it and had to go around. He finally dropped us off at the back of the hotel, and we had to drag our luggage around to the front ourselves.

Check-in was difficult. Both large families in our party reserved two rooms each, and at both check-ins, the hotel didn’t have all of our rooms ready on time. In both cases, they said housekeeping wasn’t done with the rooms. It seems like they could benefit from hiring more housekeepers, since that’s the excuse they gave both times.

The lobby was actually very nice, there was plenty of room to sit while waiting for people to join you. Their concierge service was outstanding, always suggesting the best route or the best place to eat for our crowd. Likewise the luggage service (bellhops, porters, whatever you want to call them) were also great, and had a great time talking to our kids whenever we passed through the lobby.

The room locations were sometimes difficult – quite a long walk to some rooms, while others (closer to the elevators) were easy to get to. All the rooms were large and comfortable. Everything was clean and shiny, and I didn’t notice anything not working.

We book leisure hotel stays based largely on the availability of a pool for our kids. We find that when traveling, having the kids jump in the pool is a great way to wind them down, and tire them out a bit before bedtime. This hotel has a pool, but its family hours – when kids can be in the pool – are very restrictive: 9 AM to 7 PM. This doesn’t exactly leave much time for a dip after dinner, before bedtime. You pretty much have to use the pool before you go to dinner, or it’s too late. And they are very aggressive about enforcing those hours. At the pool check-in desk, they explained that they have external subscribers who want to use the pool for laps with no kids. In my book, that makes it all the worst – as a hotel guest, I expect my requirements to be met before “outside subscribers.” Based on the pool limitations alone, I might look at other hotels in the area if and when I go back to London with my kids.

We ate at their dining room, and at the adjoining bar, a couple of times. We’re usually in a hurry for breakfast, and they have a breakfast buffet which helps speed things up. The confusing part was, they charged different rates for their “continental buffet” and their “hot buffet”, and you weren’t sure which one you wanted until you saw both. The pub food was great, very tasty and pretty good service.

The separate tea room, with traditional afternoon tea, was exceptional, and although their afternoon tea is pricey (GBP20, I believe) it was an experience I'll never forget, drinking tea and eating finger sandwiches and scones in front of picture windows that seem to be sitting right under Big Ben.

Check-out was weird. I had two rooms, both on the same credit card, and both with the same Marriott Rewards card applied to them. On both stays, one room got an “express check out” bill under the door on the last morning, and the other didn’t. And the bill, in both cases, was just for one room. So I had to go to the desk in order to get a bill for both rooms.

There’s actually too much to say about what’s nearby… in the same building as the hotel, you have several restaurants, a film museum, and aquarium, and a huge arcade (Dave & Busters style). Nearby is, of course, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, two tube stops, the Thames, a riverwalk type of arcade with lots of restaurants, a skate park, and river tours. You can definitely stay busy here.

All in all, I’d give the hotel four out of five stars, with a perfect score wanting better treatment of families at the pool.
