“Great hotel with friendly staff”
Reviewed 7 February 2014

I had a lovely stay at the Rubens hotel, nice location and the staff were extremely helpful and pleasant, they could not do enough for us!
I will definitely stay here again and would recommend them.
The room was the standard queen room, not massive but was perfect for what we wanted, clean and comfy, with a spacious shower.

Overall, I had a good stay at the Rubens. I spent five days here in the week after Christmas (2013). The rooms are compact, but try to be luxurious. The bedding was luxurious with a big, fat down comforter, and the bathroom was marbleized, though compact. All the toiletries and towels and extras were first class. The weirdest thing, though, was that, although everything about the room was four star-- the carpet was filthy. That somewhat detracted from the allure of the room. I debated complaining, changing rooms etc., but just decided to ignore the carpet and move on. The location of the hotel is spectacular, right across the street from Buckingham Palace, and the palace gift shop! Oh-- and this is an important thing-- I had dinner one evening in the hotel's restaurant-- "the Library," which is a cozy and romantic, dimly lit restaurant whose walls are line with bookcases-- and the food was spectacular! A definite 5-star gastronomic experience-- just wonderful! Even if you're not staying at the hotel-- I would highly recommend the restaurant. It was amazing!

Thank you for taking the time to post your review of The Rubens at the Palace on Tripadvisor. I am most grateful for your feedback, which is such a valuable source of information for me, regardless of whether it is good or bad, and helps me monitor the service we provide.

I was concerned to read that you were dissatisfied with the level of cleanliness in the bedroom. I can assure you that we have stringent procedures in place for checking rooms prior to allowing guests to check into these. I was therefore most concerned to read your comment regarding the carpet and have taken this back to my Executive Housekeeper.

On a more positive note, I was delighted to read that you enjoyed your dining experience at the hotel and enjoyed the feel of the hotel overall.
Yours sincerely,

Malcolm Hendry

Went in October Computer problems delayed comments .
We went with friends and had a Wonderful time, Staff and hotel were great. Could not Fault it.
I would gladly stay here again anytime.
Food was really good, Breakfast outstanding and Staff excellent. We had an Evening meal one and we all enjoyed them.
Moved to one of the comfortable lounges afterwards and was entertained by a brilliant piano player and singer.
A night later a different piano player and singer ... really good on both night, He asked people for requests and was only too willing to play most of them .
As I like a lot of varying music Blue's Jazz etc it was really good and he did make comment on how wide my tastes were.
All in all A thoroughly enjoyable time and I would have liked to stay longer.

Room Tip: We had a room at the back of the Hotel, a lot of work going on with the new tube station and pile dr...

My partner and I recently stayed at the Rubens to celebrate her 70th birthday. We found the hotel very comfortable and relaxing with excellent friendly and efficient service. The hotel is well located for travel connections and key locations in central London. We found the restaurant facilities to be excellent, and very flexible. You could either have a 5 star bar meal or a wonderful dinner in their Library Restaurant which is a small and intimate dining experience. An excellent hotel which we would definitely recommend to others and one we will be visiting again in the future.

Myself, my husband & 6 year old daughter stayed at The Rubens the 2nd week of December so we could soak up some of the London christmas atmosphere, and after following this chain of hotels on Trip Advisor for some time we had no doubt The Rubens would be an excellent choice.

Opinions are a funny thing & you have to take them with a pinch of salt, but for example people who complain that the bathroom had some chipped tiles, there was a problem with something in the bedroom, the air con didn't work etc...these are all valid opinions but people who state these opinions in reviews but then say they didn't actually tell the hotel so they could do something about it, well you do have to wonder.
What i know is that the service from here is second to none. By every member of staff. From my initial booking online with Malcolm to the moment we walked out the door they could not have been anymore helpful, courteous or generous.
We arrived after a long journey, before normal check in time, and waited in the bar whilst our room was prepared. This didn't take long at all considering we had arrived early. We were then informed our room was ready & made our way upstairs.
Our little girl had enjoyed her own personal check in with a lovely young girl. She loved the attention & they went through all her 'favourites' & helped her fill in her own personal check in.
Upon arrival to our room we found the hotel had very generously upgraded us to a suite which was a fantastic size room for the 3 of us & in beautiful decoration.
Our bags were brought up to our room very swiftly after & we had a lovely friendly conversation with the porter.
A tray with a card addressed to us & a plate with some lovely chocolates on had been placed in our room along with a festive bunch of flowers!
The room had everything we needed; plenty of space, heavy thick curtains, kettle & tray with amenities, built in wardrobes with lights, wall mounted television, a huge book full of helpful information for getting around London & on the services the Hotel offered, modern clean bathroom with dressing gowns & slippers provided, fresh bottled water & a huge bed with the most crispest sheets & comfortable pillows I've ever slept on!
Some reviews complain about the views from the windows, i.e internal etc. To be honest i take that with a pinch of salt too. I mean unless you specifically request or pay for a room with a really good view, you will get what you get. Not everyone can have a palace or external view can they otherwise it'd be a rather small hotel. Our view was looking in on the building, no 'view' at all but to be honest we weren't bothered at all. We didn't pay to sit looking out of a window, we paid to enjoy the service & experience of this hotel along with getting out into London itself.

There was building work going on right near the hotel but it finished at a respectable time & it started at a respectable time in the morning too. I'm not sure what people expect the hotel they are staying in to do about 'totally unrelated to them' building work??

You cannot have a better location than the The Rubens. Tube stations are nearby, Buckingham Palace over the road, Hyde Park a 10 minute walk away. It really is centrally placed & very easy to get to lots of the big attractions.

The Cavalry Bar & Palace Lounge were wonderfully cosy & we spent a few hours in there with a pianist playing, lots of happy relaxed guests & a few glasses of wine. Complimentary nibbles were always being handed out too.

In the Reception they have a very handy table next to the check in desk with lots of sweets & hot chocolate which are all readily available to take out on your trip into the city. Very exciting for a little girl!!

Breakfast was an experience, it really was amazing to see how well organised the staff were considering how hugely busy the breakfast room was.
There was a very good range of cereals, porridge, pastries, cooked breakfast to choose from with your eggs being cooked fresh in front of you. Plenty of tea, fresh juice, toast brought to your table as & when you wanted it too.

Would we stay here again? Most definately!!! There are a few boxes they obviously haven't got ticked to be classed as a 5* hotel but taking into account the service, the staff, the personal touches, the consideration & thoughtfulness that all make up the complete Rubens package definately makes them a 5* hotel in our opinion

Stayed at The Rubens in January 2014 for 2 nights. Beautiful and great location for Victoria Station. The staff were just so welcoming and not too OTT. Room was small but so cozy :)

We would definitely return to the Rubens. Full of Character and history.
