“Not in my list of future hostels to book!!!”
Reviewed 7 January 2012

Where should I start? For the price I payed, I was expecting a little more. The hostel is upstairs, while downstairs there is a pub hmm, the bartender/receptionist was nice, although I didn't appreciate the sarcastic comment about my passport (long story). To access the hostel, you have to go out the back door and into a 'patio', consisting of only two tables, and then start pushing letters and numbers at the door knob, just to get it opened and gain access to the hostel, then, really narrow stairs, and again, enter letters and numbers on the door's knob to enter your room (1 of 4) where you are going to find 3 triple beds, for a total of 9 people cramped in a very small room, add to that the tons of lugagge that some girls brought with them into the room and that were all over the floor, tiny lockers where you can only fit your shoes, and please! do not forget the slipt they give you when you check-in, because unless you can memorize the most complicated code number (combination of letters and numbers) you will be locked out. Only two showers, very small and the hot water takes forever to run, one toilet that I was aware of, there is free wi-fi but, no computers, so no internet for those of us who do not carry arround our laptops, late at night, you can still hear some of the noise coming from the pub. Still, the location is good, walking distance to metro and bus stops, stores and shops. Free breakfast, which was fullfilling enough, at the same time I guess you can have a beer or two, and some decent pizza and then just, literally, walk upstairs and go to bed. There is no common area, or kitchen to use, so this is place is strictly to sleep in.

Staff was very nice and helpful. The 12 bed dorm was extremely cramped. Your luggage has to be in the bed with you so people have room to move. The lockers are very small (big enough for a purse). It was very clean - there was always someone cleaning while we were there. Showers were clean but very little hot water existed. Great location, close to lots of great attractions and the tube. The bar was nice after a long day of sight-seeing and had good pizza specials for travelers on a budget. If you're looking for something cheap in a great location this would be it.

Room Tip: Try to go for the dorms with less beds if you want room to move. If you're just looking for chea...

My partner and I stayed at the Steam Engine for 4 nights before departing on a 5 week euro trip. We arrived early at 7am and were greeted by a staff member. Although it was early in the morning, the check-in process took forEVER (the guy must have been half asleep still). We weren't able to get into our room as suspected but were given a couple of drink vouchers and left our luggage in the secure store room.
Rooms were clean but cramped - triple bunk beds with the bottom mattress sitting on the floor and unable to sit up in bottom bed. But otherwise, nice clean white sheets and fluffy doonas.
Breakfast was basic - toast, cereal, communal tubs of jam that people would get butter all in, and god knows how long the milk is left out on the bench for! Drink prices at the bar were reasonable but no atmosphere at all at the bar, unless you're a local 50-year-old footbal fanatic who's every second word is a swear word.
Bathrooms disgusting - once you manage to get hot water after 30minutes or so, the shower will be overflowing as the drains are clogged and start regurgitating brown stuff. No where to put toiletries or dry clothes.
Location wasn't bad - close to convenience shops, Lambeth North train station and a short walk to Westminster Bridge and Imperial War Museum (a must see).
Wifi was good!
Overall, there's too many things that I did not like about this place to ever return.

If you spend a lot of time at your hostel, I do not recommend the Steam Engine: With the only "public" space being the pub downstairs, there is nowhere to really relax; the staff were a bit brusque although efficient; the breakfast was very meager (cornflakes, cheap bread and lipton tea being about the extent); the two bathrooms were not cleaned frequently enough; I was on top of a 3 bed-bunk, and with zero floor space for my luggage, had to awkwardly carry it the three levels and sleep with it on my bed. Despite all this, as a solo traveller who didn't spend much time at the hostel, the Steam Engine worked out well and was worth the cheap price. It seemed to attract a lot of other single travelers who were easy to meet, and the location really was perfect. In summary, nothing to boast about, but for its value and handy location, the Steam Engine is a reasonable accommodation at a very fair price.
