“Better than Expected”
Reviewed 12 September 2013

We booked this hotel through an Expedia hidden hotel deal. We were concerned after reading the reviews. However, I took a tip from another reviewer and e-mailed the hotel ahead of time, confirming our reservation and telling them we had read their reviewed and required a nice room and could not be moved to the other hotel. We were pleasantly surprised with our room on the 3rd floor. We had a cozy room, nicely decorated and then steps going down to a closet and bathroom. There were obvious water damage and was a little shabby, but otherwise was clean. The mattress was very poor, but actually slept well. It appeared that there was supposed to be a water heater because there was coffee and tea, but we did not have anything in our room to heat water with. Also, the woman at the front desk told us breakfast went until 10:30 on the weekends, but when we showed up at 10am on Saturday they told us breakfast was done already. It is definitely not a 4 star hotel by American standards. The location is excellent as we were able to walk to most of the main sights in London.

We were quite nervous about our stay in this hotel after reading the bad reviews. However we were pleasantly suprised. Our room was really rather nice maybe a little shabby round the edges but the sheets were clean and the bed was comfy we both slept really well which is rare for me in a hotel room. Usually they are too hot and stuffy because the windows dont open and noisy, but this was quiet with good ventilation because the windows open.
When we got there after 3hrs on the Mega bus we wanted to make a cup of tea but there was no kettle, I went down to reception where the staff were lovely and accomodating and actually made us a big pot of tea and carried it to our room.
We would stay here again the reception area was very stylish and it is in a good position.
Tip: ring before you go and ask for a nice room.

Just been to this hotel at the weekend for my daughters 21st, was a bit nervous due to reviews on this website, but have to say pleasantly surprised, great location near theatre we wanted , near tube station Victoria, also can walk to Buckingham Palace in 10 mins, Clean and tidy room , asked for more towels no problem, breakfast was basic but not unpleasant, would have liked choice of how eggs were cooked and not just given scrambled, but that is a minor point, full English with toast, pastries and plenty of juice and tea or coffee, so if you want a nice hotel in a central location and not too expensive chose this one.

Great location. Service and room preparation were well below their normal standard. No towels, no bath mat, missing telephone. Telephone that finally came didn't work well. Staff argued with each other.

We visited tophams for one night as part of an anniversary weekend, booked through hotwire seeing it was a "4* hotel*. After reading the reviews on tripadvisor I planned ahead, emailing them twice to confirm that we were a) going to be in the tophams hotel and not the sister, belgravia mews and b) the room would be worth staying in, considering it was our anniversary. It seems to pay to enquire ahead as our room was quite nice (however, not if you were paying full price) bar a few scuff marks on furniture etc. Our only issue is how close you are to adjoining rooms; we could quite easily hear our neighbours. The breakfast on the other hand, was appalling, our "continental breakfast" was three stale pieces of toast, two mini croissants and I had the fruit salad, which was three cubed bits of apple and a couple of grapes. This would have been bearable apart from the surly and scruffy waitress who seemed pained to serve us. We ended up feeling really uncomfortable and left the hotel as soon as we could. This place is average if you end up getting it through a secret hotel deal, but please don't pay full price, it's definitely not worth it!

Room Tip: Email before emphasising importance of nice room!

DO NOT TAKE AFTERNOON TEA AT THIS HOTEL, unless you've a particular desire for poor service, the lowest standard of food & decor that is to be polite, shabby without the chic. We were so disappointed & shocked by what we were offered it was a case of laugh or cry. We chose to laugh, uncontrollably for a while as we remembered discussing what we should wear for this anticipated 'grand' occasion. The staffs lack of attention was quite possibly acute embarrassment & the empty tables testament to its quality. AVOID!

After reading all the reviews on various sites, I was very worried about our stay here for 2 nights for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. I had emailed when I booked to see if we could stay in the main part of the hotel and have a bottle of champagne ready in our room on arrival. After a couple of emails the hotel confirmed that this was confirmed and that the champagne would be there in our room on arrival. When we arrived the receptionist was polite and directed us to our room. When we arrived in the room unfortunately the champagne wasn't there, we phoned reception to find out where it was and they said they would send it up, after 45 minutes still no champagne so my husband went to reception to chase it up and within 5 minutes the bottle arrived. That was the downside. The up side was that the room was very comfortable, decorated well had a lovely comfortable bed and pillows, as well as having full working air conditioning (although a little noisy at times), full working TV and was kept clean with fresh bedding on both nights. The breakfast was OK, not the biggest of full English breakfasts and the staff although efficient and polite often kept repeating if we had ordered etc. On the whole we were very happy with our stay at the hotel.

Room Tip: Ask to be in the main part of the hotel and not the secondary hotel they have down the street.
