This is not a 4 star property. At best the main hotel could be described as a small boutique style hotel. Unfortunately, the owners seem to using this hotel, the one viewable online, as a front while sending guests to other, less desirable rooms in different buildings.

We checked in for our two night stay very late and were taken to a building down the street. Our room felt like a dorm room and was lacking in most of the room amenities promised, notably air conditioning and a phone! The room had no pillows, and going to the lobby to request some meant going back up and down stairs and down the street to the main hotel. Exhausted, we stayed. The next day I requested to speak with a manager and was told none was on staff! I was given an email to write to. I was told the hotel was fully booked and I could not be moved to a proper room. Upon checking out, I did speak with a manager, who admitted that the online description was wrong and said the site needed to be "updated". I didn't really believe this, since sending guests to a different building entirely seems like it would warrant more than an overlooked 'update'. She said we had paid for rooms in the main building and she 'would have' moved us - if only we'd asked when she was around. She offered us a free breakfast with our next stay, useless as we will not be returning to Europe soon and not to this hotel.

Because our building also had no wifi - it was not working our entire stay - we spent a fair amount of time using it in the hotel lobby. Guests checking I were being send to other hotels in cabs and seemed confused. I would not trust that you'll receive the room described online if you book .

I went with 3 friends to have a relaxing afternoon and couldn't recommend the service we received more highly. It is very conveniently located, only a 2 minute walk from Victoria station and the staff were so friendly, welcoming and accommodating. It was really nice to find somewhere quiet and peaceful in the heart of London. The selection of finger sandwiches were quite plain but tasty with choice of salmon, cucumber, soft cheese, cheddar & ham but one of our friends couldn't eat bread and another is vegetarian so they made one a bowl of fruit salad and the other some sliced egg and tomato sandwiches, which were delicious. The cakes were divine! Mini cream eclairs, chocolate brownie, strawberry darily cream slice, carrot cake and my favourite which was an hazlenut profiterole! But the winner was definitely the cream scones with heavenly clotted cream & jams. This was just perfect with our tea and after we'd enjoyed our glass of proseco. They even gave one friend a coffee and another peppermint tea! We were actually pretty fussy but the staff were happy to help and we had a lovely time :)

We were silly enough to book accommodation at Tophams prior to checking out the reviews. The ONLY plus about this place is the location. The hotel itself was old, the rooms smelt musty and the beds felt like beds you would find in a curb side collection. And don't get me started on the rude staff. They could have potentially made up the downfall with polite and helpful staff but this crew was anything but. Beware of the reception staff - our first words were what a cow! Moooooo is all I say. Don't bother.

Was very worried at first after reading the bad comments, the hotel was lovely, the staff are so friendly and ensured our stay was pleasant, but would suggest to change the pillows a bit uncomfortable otherwise breakfast was good but could be better, staff in the restaurant where fantastic, keep up the good work. Differently will come back.

Arriving after midnight at the pre booked hotel we found a very pleasant receptionist, who was polite and friendly, as we were booking in a very drunk man who was being exceptionally rude was butting in and demanding attention, obviously trying to bully the female receptionist, she dealt with him in a very firm and professional manner. Our room had been reserved and was on the ground floor, the room was tastefully decorated, plenty big enough, comfortable and clean and tidy. The bathroom also clean, with hot and cold water had a seperate bath and shower, and was of a very good size. The air conditioning was a godsend as it has been very hot and humid and we, d had a long day. Continental breakfast was beautifully presented, and the waitresses were lovely.

After reading some of these other reviews I'm left wondering what hotel they ve been staying at.

Tophams is all about location, location, location - convenient for central London and a two minute walk to Victoria Station.

Thanks to fellow Trip Advisors I made darn sure I was in the main building. Luckily I was given 109 on the first floor at the back of the building. For a London budget hotel the room size was okay, the bed was comfortable and it was wonderfully quiet at night. And the big plus was that in London's current heat wave the room was air-conditioned. There was a fridge big enough to store the odd bottle of water plus tea and coffee making facilities.

Okay so there's a crack in the floor tile and the carpet is stained..... the rest of the room was fine and nicely decorated.... I paid £133 a night and for London I've paid more and got less. So I was all for giving Tophams a four star review until the next morning when I came to turn on the shower.... It was a separate shower unlike many other hotels where the shower is over the bath. But only hot water came out of one of the taps and the cold water tap didn't work at all, despite may turning it on full...... So in the manner of a Fawlty Towers sketch I had to run backwards and forwards between the boiling hot shower and cold bath.....

The other Fawltyish aspect to my stay was that when I came back to the hotel in the evening a fellow guest was berating the reception staff for something and it didn't seem to be going in the guest's favour. I don't blame the staff for any of this. They're doing a job to the best of their ability. This is a profit making venture and customer service can't be the owner's priority.

Room Tip: Stay on upper floors in the main building
