The Mad Hatter is located within walking distance of Westminster Bridge, but far enough away to be free from crowds of tourists. It derives its name from the industrial age when the building was used as a gentleman’s hat factory, where the famous bowler hats, top hats and boaters were produced. Now it includes an old-style London pub, spacious with lots of comfortable booths and seating, where we went for lunch. Its menu is not huge but has a good range of less usual pub meals (although fish and chips are of course there), listed under starters, mains, sharers, sandwiches, desserts and their speciality – pies. We selected the Steak & Fullers ESB pie, filled with caramelised shallots, roasted field mushrooms and Fullers extra special bitter gravy. The dish came with chips or mash and mixed vegetables, and was well presented and very tasty. Service was quick and pleasant throughout. The pub has a selection of ales and an extensive range of whiskies.
