“great for west end”
Reviewed 23 May 2014

My daughters and I stayed here to go see a show .The hotel is very quaint and the porters are so friendly and helpful .The hotel is looking tired in places but this adds to its charm and reminds you of the olden days .There is music playing and it is a nice touch .We booked a disabled room which was OK , shower was smaller than I expected plus there was only 2 plug sockets and the tea /coffee tray is appalling given the room size.Additionally there were only 3 towels which were not enough for us . However the room was a good size and we heard no noise from outside . The lifts are not enough for the hotel and need updating .Breakfast is small but a good selection and the room is well lit and set out in art deco style .This is a perfect base for west end and is close to king cross and euston stations plus its in a gorgeous setting. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would return

I spent one night at the Tavistock hotel on a bed and breakfast basis. The reception staff were efficient and I was checked in quickly. The room was a twin so was of an adequate size, but generally looked worn. Furnishings and bedspreads looked very dated and the room was in need of a coat of paint. Cleaning could have done with more attention to detail as there were crumbs (not mine) by the side of the bed. On a positive note, the room had a lovely view of Tavistock Square.
I had a light meal in the Jacques Bar. This was reasonable, cheap and served relatively quickly, probably because I asked for a menu and then asked to order. Others were not so lucky and I observed other customers leave after waiting a long time to place their order. Some of the waiting staff did their utmost to avoid eye contact with customers which was an unfortunate practice.
Breakfast was adequate. I thought the concept of pre-cooked toast displayed on the buffet bar odd; I didn't see much on offer to hang around for, but the restaurant generally looked busy. Nothing to complain about, but nothing special. Don't expect locally sourced produce or items cooked to order.

All in all the prices of the room and meal were reasonable for central London. Would I stay again? Yes probably for another short business stay, no longer.

We booked this hotel through superbreaks with train fare included evening meal and breakfast for 2 mornings, their was eight of us so it did not work out expensive. The hotel lobby is the only decent part of the hotel, rooms are really outdated small and noisy if you are staying at the front of the hotel (room 709).The shower water went everywhere, 1 small wardrobe with 3 hangers ,the room was stuffy with the windows closed.Very central for Kings cross and underground stations plenty of pubs and restaraunts close by.The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful breakfasts were ample with a varied choice. We did,nt pay much so we can,t complain.

Room Tip: stay on the inner side

We arrived at St. Pancras on the Eurostar and were able to walk to the Tavistock from the station (10 min). The staff, although not rude, were not very welcoming (would it have killed them to crack a smile?). We had stayed in a horrid hotel in Paris and were pleased to see that we had a decent sized room (for a budget hotel in London) overlooking Tavistock Square. The bathroom was also a good size and had a tub which I appreciated. Although the decor is a bit dated it is not shabby. The hallways are wide and well lit. The hotel is in one of my favourite London locations, close to the British Museum and transportation. We booked through our airline and got a very reasonable rate. It was quite warm in London and the heat was set a little high but we were fine with the window open. The bed was soft and springy but I slept well nonetheless. I would have liked to have internet in the room as opposed to the lobby but this is a minor quibble. If I can get a room at the same price I will definitely stay there again.

My wife and I have stayed in the Tavistock Hotel when in London for several years. It is in an excellent location with the British Museum only a few blocks away, an underground station one block away and several small restaurants and pubs in the area. It is near the University of London which means there a several good bookstores in the area.

The hotel provides good basic services: Wi-Fi free in the lobby area, a full English breakfast, bathrooms ensuite with shower and large bath tubs, clean rooms and a cooperative staff. If you are making a quick stop over in London or spending several days I recommend the Tavistock. If you are a family with children, I recommend its neighbor the Royal National Hotel, which has triple and quad rooms.

For a weekend break in London the tavistock is ideal.Rooms are clean but basic, beds are a little on the soft side but that depends on personal preference. Shower, attached to the bath is hot and the water pressure is good.
Tea and coffee making facilities in the room
Staff are friendly and attentive and immediately sent up extra tea and coffee when we ran out.
Breakfast was a buffet and as much as you want, usual full English breakfast or continental.
The location in Bloomsbury is Ideal for busses to Camden town,Oxford st, and the theatres in the Aldwych area. Russel square and Holborn underground stations are nearby.
I would recommend this Hotel for basic,"somewhere to sleep and have a good breakfast" weekends or longer.

Room Tip: Quiet rooms at the back and up about the fifth floor
