“Good Room & Location - attempts to chisel additional money disappointing”
Reviewed 23 January 2010

Good points: room size and bed was good, large bathroom (but relatively narrow, arkward shower/bath), 5min walk from Holborn Tube Station, British Museum and OK pubs and restaurants

Bad:
Wireless internet (thought to be included in room price) was quoted as GBP5 for 1 hour, or nearly GBP13 per day - sorry but I find that ridiculously expensive for what is now commonly included (and which seemed to be when we booked) - internet, for the price of a coffee, is available around the corner.
Breakfast were ordinary and had too many overbearing "trainee" staff, plus the room lighting was too dim.
Was woken up 2 mornings before 7am (bang-crash) by room service cleaning adjacent rooms.
Automated mini-bar fridge made it difficult to even buy and store some fresh milk.
Staff seemed overly keen to up-sell or push additional cost services – to the point of being irritating

Good location and room but not great value for money – might do better elsewhere

Booked this as an apartment room with the dreaded 'lastminute.com' as a secret hotel, I was initially disappointed that the room was not an apartment (lastminute.com's fault) and then very surprised that someone (who???) had given the hotel a 5 star rating. My room was small and the bathroom minuscule, but after the initial appointment I enjoyed my stay, the room was clean, the staff courteous and the location worked well for me.

I do not know why people moan so much for on here. We visited the hotel last weekend and had a wonderful stay, the hotel staff were so friendly and helpful. The butlers opened the doors for you on every occassion possible. We asked for some knives and plates for our room as we had bought ourselves some antipasto from the local Sainsbury's. We offered to wait for these, but no they brought them to our room without charge. Okay, the complimentary robes were not in our rooms like many others have said, but we called reception and they arrived in 2minutes. The bed was so comfortable. Yes I agree the bathroom you couldnt swing a cat in, but to be honest I don't spend that much time in the bathroom in London! And yes the decor is a little outdated, but it was beautifully clean. I agree it is not a 5* hotel, the service is though, but not the hotel itself, more of a 4*, and if I had paid the recommended rate of £250 a night I would not be as keen as I am, however on last minute websites we had two nights for less than half of this in a wonderfully serviced hotel a stones throw from Holborn tube station, it was great!

A great location and ample sized rooms. The pool was lovely, but the showers in our room were underpowred and our second floor room had a lot of traffic noise. A good hotel for the money, but ask for a room higher than the second floor.

We stayed two nights, New Years Eve and the 1st of January to celebrate my birthday. Would never go here again! The worst 5 star I have ever stayed in! I have received more service from a 2* Travel Lodge! Don't pay the money!!!

We encountered:

1. Terrible service, we returned to our room at 5.30 in the evening ready to get ready to go to the theatre and have a shower. Our room had not been cleaned! Had to go to reception to ask for more towels!
2. Our heating was broken, our room was freezing cold, we reported this but it broke once again! Imagine waking up on a January morning in a freezing cold room!
3. The bed was just a pull down mattress, very un-comfy, very thin duvet, freezing!
4. Tiny bathroom could hardly open the door!

We complained at the end of our stay, after all our troubles and we were offered a free upgrade if we were to return! WHAT A CHEEK...as if I would return!

Probably my own fault for wanting to sqeeze every last penny out of Christmas-night-out-with-boyfriend budget, but i got very excited when i saw this '5 star' hotel on Lastminute.com for £132 for a Saturday night's stay so close to Christmas.

The reason why the price was so good was simple: IT ISN'T A FIVE STAR HOTEL.

As all other reviews correctly say - it is a good location though.

Bad points were that the room was very pokey as was the bathroom, we were shoved in the deepest darkest furthest away corner of the hotel, and there was a power cut in the early morning and therefore no heating.

However, good points were friendly reception staff who willingly took off the 10 things we hadn't used from the minibar from our bill, nice Sony LCD tv, and nice toiletries in the bathroom.

The hotel itself is ok. It's in a good location, 5 mins walk to a tube station and 15-20 mins walk to shops and theatres.

Its definitely not 5 star, I would say more like a good 3/4 star.

Reasonable room, small but ok. Bathroom tiny and old. Only one dressing gown and one flannel. Asked for more, didn't get any.

No turn-down service, or any form of room tidy for our whole stay.

Service was terrible.

Hotel had a resonable atmosphere and the room was quiet.

Overall a disappointing stay.
