“Not a five star but adequate”
Reviewed 3 April 2010

I booked this hotel, yet again through lastminute.com secret hotels option - does anyone choose this hotel by free choice after seeing the 1970s decor? They had no record of my reservation when I arrived but the staff got it sorted in about 20 minutes. The hotel is adequate. As others have said, the location is great. If you get the €100 rate even better. It's clearly not a five hotel but its comfortable. It is also a good contender for the smallest hotel bathroom award - they have to be seen to be believed. Avoid this hotel if you are wanting something for a special occasion but it's fine for staying over for work. There was a big hen night group arriving when I was leaving so bear that in mind too when booking.

Booked a spa package with a friend .
Positives
Better than expected the room we were upgraded to was HUGE
Included in the spa package- half an hour massage per person, use of the gym/pool and a hearty breakfast in bed, complimentary upgrade if available, late checkout(2pm)
friendly helpful staff
Close to holborn train station

Negatives
Parking an issue-£25/24hrs although this is the same for the whole of london
If they try and add a service charge for breakfast in bed, remind them that it is included in the package price

We booked this as a "top secret" last minute hotel so got a reasonable rate although without breakfast. The location was great, very close to Covent Garden & several theatres. Staff were friendly, although didn't seem to be managed very well - i.e. 2 people on the door, 1 at an empty concierge desk, 2 at another empty desk & only 1 at reception trying to deal with a queue of guests. Also there was still a maintenance worker in our room when we arrived (not early), fixing a lamp or something. The pool was very good & the rest of the leisure facilities looked fine though we didn't use them. However the hotel loses massive points for the state of the room. The sleeping area was as you would expect, no different to thousands of other hotels. But the bathroom was tiny - one of the smallest I've ever seen in a hotel. The plug in our basin didn't work so that the water filled up until it got to the overflow outlet. The room was quite cool but when we tried to adjust the thermostat, the heating was so noisy that we had to turn it off. There was no spare blanket in the room so we ended up going to bed with towels over us as blankets (dry; don't worry we showered in the morning). It's possible we just were unlucky with our room. I would probably stay there again; after all it's just a place to sleep & location is important.

Booked this place literally the morning of our departure, got 2 nights with breakfast for £200, location was great, 2 minutes walk to the tube, 5 minutes to Covent Garden, 10 - 15 minutes Leicester Square / Soho, all by walking!

We were very kindly upgraded to a larger room, before arrival, as we were on a special occasion, the lobby does need a bit of the 21st Century, but overall, a nice hotel, staff were very nice, location is slap bang in the middle of the centre, so there will be police / ambulance and fire brigade passing, from time to time, didn’t really bother us at all, no noise from anywhere once the doors were closed. The bathroom was more than adequate. Shower with a bath, nice, spacious rooms.

Now with breakfast, OK, I can comment on this, there is a choice of re-formed ham and turkey with croissants, and some cereals. Two choices of cheese, Brie and Cheddar......hmmm. the staff there did their best and were very courteous and helpful, the selection on offer is not their fault. But the hotel could have done a little better than they had, the 2nd day we were offered a hot breakfast, normally £8 extra, but still, quality wasn’t that great......

I then asked for a late check out, of 2pm, normally 12pm, but they had to confer with the Management to confirm this, they did offer a late check out after this, for 2 pm, however, a short oversight on my flight departure times we didn’t benefit from this. It was a little odd for staff to bother a GM for guests to have an extra 2 hours......

Overall, I would recommend this hotel, the staff did their best with what they had, always smiling and friendly. Other folk here have commented on the staff being foreign nationals?? This surprised me to read that, this is London folks, people from all over the world live there, so its normal to have a multi-cultured staff. And it’s nice for tourists to have staff on hand that they can comfortably converse with, isn’t it!!

Bagged a bargain on lastminute.com @ £99 room only which for such a good central location is a steal. Close to Holborn tube station and close enough to the West End to make travelling there comfortable, yet far enough away from the hubbub to be quiet and safe at night. Nice swimming pool is a bonus too. Polite, courteous and helpful staff as well. Wouldn't hesitate to stay there again for the same rate.

I was a little nervous following previous reviews but i shouldnt have worried; the Grange Holborn was excellent. Very pleasantly suprised.
We booked through Lastmin, top secret for £260 (2nights, 2person room only)
Location: Excellent, you can see the tube station from the hotel, and handily on the Central Line giving great access to all the main sites. You can easily walk to Covent Garden / Theatreland etc
Room: We were on the 6th floor and saw ours and a friends room; ours was huge due to the fact it had a pillar in the centre of it (a little odd!). Our friends room was smaller but had all the essentails. To be fair the bathrooms are small but they're mirrored and well lit. We had a King bed and more than enough storage etc. The decor throughout the hotel is quite traditional with a middle east theme, but its spotless and good quality. We had a great nights sleep even though its situated on a main road, the windows etc are sound proof.
Service: There was a small hic-up at check-in (they couldnt find our booking!!) but this was quickly sorted out; no matter what we asked for day or night it was with us within 5mins. They even decorated champange glasses with strawberries when we ask for a bucket and glasses and charged our mobile phones at 1.30am. I would advise you check your invoice as there were a few mini-bar items which were not ours; but they were swiftly removed.
There is concerge desk manned 24hrs who will arrange taxis etc; remember to tell them if its a black cab or a private hire you want. We ordered a taxi and a top of the range merc turned up; which wasnt too expensive and a great treat to turn up to a club in a nice car.
I would definately recommend the Grange again......

i am just back from staying at this hotel for 2 night leisure break - i booked through last minute and got it for £130 per night! couldnt complain about anything, got upgraded to superior room which had plenty room, clean and fresh. location was fantastic, only 2 mins walk from tube station and 5min walk from covent garden! all staff were friendly (language barrier was a slight problem as all staff are foreign!), hotel was quiet and all requirements met. decor is fresh and although not ultra modern (more middle eastern), if i had to be extremely picky only thing i would say is that bathroom could have been a bit bigger but certainly would not put me off staying there again or recommending to a friend. all in all great hotel and had no problems!
