Very well situated in front of a park: therefore quiet and cosy. No luxury but you get everything you need at the right price. We loved the terrace and the atmosphere. Staff is very friendly and the beefburger in the restaurant is worth a recommandation.

Room Tip: Room facing the hotel parking.

I stayed here a couple of weeks ago as a treat to myself before competing in the Race for Life on the common the next day. Sadly I was bitterly disappointed. I had heard (and read) great things, maybe I just chose a bad weekend - granted there was a wedding on the night we stayed, but we did not have a good stay. Upon arrival the staff member on the desk was not very friendly. The room was down a dingey corridor and left a lot to be desired. It was dark, the bed was rock solid and the bathroom needed a refurb 20 years ago. It really was a disappointment, especially for the price I paid and the good things I had heard, I thought I was really in for a treat. The bar/dining staff were useless and made us feel very unwelcome at dinner. Maybe everyone was preoccupied with the wedding, but if that was the case then the other rooms should not have been occupied or at least for a more reasonable price. For the common the location is great, but I wish I had paid half the price for the Travel lodge down the road, I am sure it would have been higher quality with better service.

Thanks for taking the time to review us. We are dissapointed we did not meet your expectations and take your comments seriously. We are about to go through a major refurbishment, re-doing all of our rooms and corridors and bringing them all to the same level. I apologise but make no excuse for the staff - this is clearly unacceptable and this will be addressed, we generally pride ourselves on our service and are mystery shopped every 6 weeks to monitor and measure ourselves. We hope you did well in the race and encourage you to try us again soon.

stayed here for 4 nights whilst working nearby.

The hotel is a bit tired looking in places, but very comfortable, with plenty of hot water in the modern ensuite. Room 102 is near the hotel reception and was a bit noisy, but manageable.

The adjoining pub is great, and the food in the dining room excellent. Five minutes walk from Clapham South Tube station (Northern Line) so accessible from the main overground stations.

My Grandma lived in Clapham, my Mum was raised there, and now we have found a great place to stay when we go back there. The hotel is an oasis of tranquility set on the common - apart from when the pub bar is open, but although noisy you can tell everyone is having a good time!
At least the rooms are quiet. I cannnot agree with Marek010 about being "in need of a complete overhaul", the rooms we have had have always been spotless, and I have never seem mildew or cracked tiles. The restaurant area has had a complete overhaul, as has the conservatory. We had a great lunch last Saturday, and even the the place was heaving after the 10k Race for Life on the common, service was quick and as friendly as always. The breakfasts are to die for.
Ok, it's somewhat more expensive than the Battersea Travelodge, but what you pay for is a quantum leap from the other hotels in the area that we have tried! So if you are considering a stay at this wonderful old pub with attached modern hotel rooms don't be put off by some of the other reviewers comments. The staff even helped us clean the car of some of the offerings from the local pigeons before we set off!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the car park, they are very quiet.

The property

An old pub on Clapham Common with a new (1990s) hotel extension built onto the back. The location is good - off the main road, the common at the back, birdsong, trees, and more peace than you normally find in London. The pub has recently been refurbed (losing its comfy tired tattiness) and now has aspirations to be a boutique hotel (which it definitely is not).

Reception

Arriving in reception, the floor and the whole room was vibrating noticeably, due to the operation of what must be an enormous and very noisy boiler in the cellar beneath. Otherwise reception polite and efficient.

The Room

On the second floor at the furthest possible point from the vibrating boiler, but the boiler's noise transmitted quite clearly into the room as a persistent and annoying low frequency hum. Each time the boiler cut in the lights in the room flickered. Apart from this feature (which will stop me from staying again) the room was clean, about 200 square feet, plain but not unpleasant furnishings, a single window which opened a few inches, but marred by the lack of a fridge.

The Bed

A poor bed, 1.4 metres perhaps, with a cheap mattress and no topper. Hollow-fibre duvet, cheapish sheets. I expected more for £140 a night. Due to the mattress, the noise, the light and the small size of the bed, sleep quality was low.

The bathroom

A full sized bath, shower over, very warm (that boiler doing its stuff), reasonable towels (newish, not tiny but not generous). Room for only one person at a time though.

Ambient noise and light

See above for boiler noise. Apart from this the room, and indeed the hotel, would be very peaceful, with Clapham Common outside the window. The curtains were too small to cover the window so woken by dawn's early light. Bring a sleep mask.

Breakfast

Breakfast was good. Artisan breads (brown and white), good yoghurt, my cooked breakfast order arrived correctly, nice dining room, pleasant staff, and my paper arrived as requested. Also, they now run breakfast til 10, so one does not have to turn out with the lark.

Room Tip: Try to get a room away from reception and the ridiculously noisy boiler. Rooms at the back look ove...

Great location, good beers and a terrific venue for a wedding reception but the hotel has seen better days. This place is in desperate need of a complete overhaul and renovation. Everything about the rooms from the mildewed and cracked bathroom tiles to the stuffy rooms (air conditioner stuck on one temperature!) cries out for some money to spent on a major upgrade.

Thank you for your detailed account, we take all your comments on board and will address them in turn, it seems there is some confusion about the noise re:boilers. The noise was not coming from the boilers but from some extract work that what happening in the kitchen, unfortunately as it was an emergency repair we could not forsee the noise issue. We apologise for the inconveniance caused.

I've lived in Clapham for 10 years so know the Windmill well but only on the drinking front. So 6 months ago when a client wanted a place to stay which "doesn't feel like I'm in London" I thought I would give the hotel a chance. 6 months on and I've put up a dozen colleagues or clients and they have all raved. So much so that one of them recently stayed there on his own romantic trip to London with his wife. The feedback I get is that whilst it is by no means luxury, it is an excellent home from home and at the price range it comes in at is great value.
