St Christopher's Oasis at the Orient
Ranked #289 of 897 Speciality Lodging in London
Reviewed 26 May 2013

My mother and I recently took a trip to London and as we wanted to do the trip on a budget we booked a hostel instead of a hotel so we could spend more money on attractions!
We chose the Oasis hostel as it was female only and promised lots of girlie extras
There are 3 St Christopher hostels on Borough High Street and you have to check in at the reception for St Christopher's Village as the Oasis has no reception on site, the only entrance is down some dirty alley way alongside a sushi take away (which you can smell inside the hostel). The signage isn't clear so we walked up and down the high street before locating our check in point.
Our room was very small but clean, there were no fluffy towels as described!
The showers and toilets were clean but our room was opposite both so it was quite noisy with the other residents using the facilities through the night.
The hostel is located in an excellent location next to London bridge and borough Market and various tube stations. The biggest positive to the Oasis was the reception staff at the Village they were extremely polite and friendly and their upbeat personalities made up for the drab interior of the oasis.
Given that the oasis was just a place to get our head down it was sufficient but I think our days of budget accommodation are over :(

Room Tip: Don't pick the Oasis based on gender friendliness, choose the Village as they have an onsite bar...

Bring earplugs to block out the noise from the busy street outside, and be prepared to check in at a different location down the street. Apart from those things, the hostel is simple and will cover your basic needs for a trip to London. I liked that a towel, bedsheets and breakfast were included in the price, even though the breakfast is really basic, with toast and cereal served on the counter at the Belushi's bar.

Worst. I wouldn't pay £5 for a night in this place. It's on such a loud busy street, entrance in a small alleyway took ages to find. Can't change water temperature in the shower and have to continually press the tap because it turns off every 10 seconds. There are 2 toilets, 1 shower and beds and that's it. No lounge, no tv, nothing. The reception is even down the road! The only half decent thing is the wifi, which I don't find too great either! Defiantly DO NOT RECOMMEND. I have stayed in hostels for the same price and have had much much better experiences. Not worth the money. Finding somewhere else asap. I don't want to spend any more time than I have to here. No atmosphere at all. Totally un sociable and uncomfortable. Hate it

I stayed in a 4 bed dorm room. The room wasn't very clean and the girls I shared with were eating in the room and left their food/dirty dishes lying around which wasn't pleasant. But with no cooking facilities in the Oasis hostel they didn't want to walk up the road to the main hostel to cook and eat. Showers not very clean either and the water turned off far too quickly so it was difficult to wash as you have to press the button to put the water back on every few seconds. The sanitary units in the toilets were overflowing for the entire 4 nights I was there, which was really unpleasant. The "fluffy pillows" weren't remotely fluffy. The towel I was given was more like a large tea towel. Bed was comfortable enough. There was no ceiling fan so we needed to have the window open to get any air (it was warm) and being on the main high street we were woken by police and ambulance sirens going past constantly every night and noise from the pub across the road. Breakfast was very basic. Would suit young party animals but I won't be going back.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back - away from the main road.

I stayed at the oasis for two nights. it is nothing special and has everything you need, a bed, wifi bathrooms, i was not a big fan of the showers they where not very hot and you keep having to turn it back on cause it does turn off after 30 or so seconds. At first I thought it was clean, i wore flip flops everywhere when i was in the room and shower, but when i got home i broke out in hives and painful hives and discovered It was hand and foot disease. I am pretty sure I got it here. When i was there i thought it was ok, wasn't quiet, beds weren't very comfy and there was no reception at the oasis so i was kinda iffy about safety as it was down a ally.

The main reason my friend and i stayed in this hostel was because it was so cheap and female-only. The rooms are incredibly small, and the bunk beds inconveniently close together. These beds are kind of unstable- mine couldn't fit next to the wall so it was on an angle, creating an unnerving gap between the bed and wall. Any time the person sleeping below me moved ever so slightly the entire bunk would convulse. Our window didn't close entirely, and as we were on the busy and slightly dodgy Burough High Street, it was very, very noisy.
The Oasis is a three or so minute walk from the main St Christophers London branch, The Village, where reception, laundry facilities, the bar etc are located- i think i would prefer to stay there to avoid walking back and forth next time.
Despite its shortcomings, the hostel is an ok place to stay- my friend and i were out most of the time so it really was just a bed to crash in at the end of the day, and it was super cheap. Otherwise, it would not be very nice to stay here.
Geographically, the Oasis is in a good (but noisy) location. It is right next to the Burough Markets, which has delicious food, and a thirty second walk from London Bridge station, from where you can easily tube a few stops to the centre of London.

This hostel, which is an all girls hostel is located directly across from borough market! Which is such an amazing market, delicious smells and meals. And only a couple blocks away from the London bridge tube station. It's great location wise but it's quite an old building. The bathrooms/showers are quite old, need serious renovation, poor sleep due to street noise, the windows are not actually sound proof windows. And there isn't any hangout space. Unfortunatly there is not a communal kitchen either, a frigde would be so much more convenient since the food in London is rubbish, would rather cook my own food. I would say this is an ok hostel if you were to stay only a few nights, like I did.
