The Old Royal Naval College is another masterpiece from Sir Christopher Wren and his assistant Nicholas Hawksmoor. The twin domes just shout Wren and look like 2 mini St. Pauls. A magnificent set of 4 buildings originally intended as a Naval hospital, built on the site of the old Greenwich Palace it still has some of the walls from earlier Royal buildings that are still visible.
About 300 years old, grandiose in the extreme from the outside and the Painted Hall inside just shouts money. I'm not much of an art lover but I couldn't help be impressed, to say it's magnificently painted doesn't do it justice.

The Secret Dome Tour
So pleased that this tour has continued this year. Initially was available last year to acknowledge 300 years since the death of Christopher Wren. Unfortunately all available tours (limited availability ) sold out quickly .
Therefore was really pleased to get an opportunity to book - limited tours with only 6 people per tour.
The ascent to the top is via stone and wooden stairs, in some places very narrow, but safety measures are covered re description of the tour and what is required. Good footwear is essential. Plus there are two Members that cover the tour.
Isobelle was our guide, who is a volunteer and clearly very passionate about the tour . She has a vast knowledge base about the tour and its history. Hamish was the other staff member at rear to ensure no missteps and safety if the group. We were lucky only 2 in our group, although it is usually fully booked.
There were 3 levels and opportunities to ask questions and take photos.
It is expensive but it is an opportunity to go in the Dome and have a very unique experience and view from the Dome. I would definitely recommend and really enjoyed it.
Plus you get a gift bag at the end of the tour and it covers other tours ie painted Hall and can be upgraded online to cover another visit to the Royal Naval College tours ( although this does not cover Dome Tour).

Very lovely place, lots to see. Our guide Jim was great and even took us on another short tour of the grounds after the painted hall. Would recommend a visit if you are in London

Came here for a Mother’s Day afternoon tea. The staff worked so hard but something had gone wrong. They were very delayed and the afternoon tea didn’t arrive at our table until after the finishing time for our time slot! The selection was also quite disappointing and certainly not worth the price. The scones were not even on two of the settings. This was an afternoon tea, scone are must and should be yummy, not small and dry… Overall the surrounding is stunning and the staff worked their socks off but my lasting memory of the afternoon is disappointing and certainly not something I’ll book again.
