Owner description: Most of this iconic building was built in the mid-19th century following a devastating fire in 1834. Westminster Hall survived the fire and dates from 1097. Visitors can book tours through the House of Commons and the House of Lords, and are welcome to watch debates and committees when the Houses are sitting..

Blue Badge guides do an incredible job touring groups through the Houses of Parliament. They probably give the tour 6 times a day, but our guide was informative, friendly and interested in the topic. I appreciated that our tour was a nice mix of information - a bit architectural, a bit on the ritual, a bit on the legislative, a bit of behind-the-scenes stories, and a bit on current affairs. Our lesson learned was that if you have an early tour time (ours was 9:15), don't plan on grabbing breakfast/coffee close-by before your tour. By luck we ended up finding a cafeteria in a Methodist church across from Westminster Abbey. Or, there's a cafeteria once you're in past security.

The houses of parliament are not only beautiful on the outside but the inside is spectacular as well. I highly recommend taking one of the guided tours they have every Saturday. The tour guide was knowledgeable and touched on this history of the building site and buildings, how the government functions there and some of the inside decoration.. I purchased my ticket online on ticketmaster but you can also purchase tickets that day!

Even in America, we see TV shots of the lords and MPs debating, so to actually walk around in the rooms where these debates take place was thrilling! Our tour guide based her tour on the annual opening of Parliament when the Queen visits and led us from the robing room through the various chambers, describing the events and the history behind them. It was fascinating. Being from overseas, we were limited to a Saturday visit, and we booked well in advance.

Open Saturdays all year round plus daily in summer, a tour of The Palace of Westminster is essential. There's no self-touring on here; the ticket price includes a walking tour and it's worth every penny. A thousand years of history brought alive by knowledgeable guides. Stand right among the benches in both chambers and come within inches of the Throne. Many, many fascinating facts and objects. Not to be missed.

The tour of the Houses of Parliament was the highlight of my London visit. Each room is sumptious and full of splendour. The excellent guide gave us a real insight into the running of the establishment and a wealth of information about its history. Do book a tour - you won't be disappointed!
