Owner description: Elizabeth Tower is the name of the famous clock tower which stands at the Houses of Parliament. The name Big Ben is often used to describe the tower, the clock and the bell but the name was first given to the Great Bell. The Elizabeth Tower was completed in 1859 and the Great Clock started on 31 May. The Great Bell's strikes were heard for the first time on 11 July and the quarter bells first chimed on 7 September. All visits to Big Ben and the Elizabeth Tower tours are now suspended due to refurbishment with the last tour having taken place on 16 December 2016. Tours are scheduled to resume in early 2020 once the work is complete. Visitors can still book tickets for a number of other tours at the Houses of Parliament which take place on Saturdays throughout the year and on weekdays during Parliamentary recesses.

“Tour inside Queen Elizabeth II Tower - Hidden Gem”
Reviewed 4 May 2014

We had contacted our MP and organised one of their tours inside the tower before our visit. You need to do this six months before visiting (due to security clearance) if you want to include this in your visit.
Our guide was very knowledgeable, and made sure to pace our 334 step climb to the top in 3 stages. In fact the pace was done to such skill and precision we were able to see and hear Big Ben (the bell) chime on the hour - a truly memorable experience.
In these days of attraction high admission costs the great thing about this experience is that it is free to UK citizens.

Visiting Big Ben made the trip feel complete!
We really felt like we were on holiday and enjoyed it!
Got loads of cool selfies with the big guy! And had a good walk over the bridge and around the area!

“An icon of London”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

You must include Big Ben (which is actually the name of the bell inside the tower!) in a walking tour of London. Make sure you stay to hear the chimes on every hour and if you go at night you can see the tower and the parliament buildings lit up. The best view is from Westminster Bridge.
