“Fitting memorial”

Honoured to have been part of a service here that brings home how special this memorial is. It's place at the centre of Britain's capital is such that everyone probably sees it at some point; it's just important to know the meaning and know it's there.

“Very Moving”
Reviewed 16 March 2014

A very moving sight as we walked along Whitehall, we have seen it on the telly during the remembrance on 11th Nov but to see it in person brings a whole different feeling.

“Lutyen's Cenotaph on Whitehall - Monument to the victims of WWI”
Reviewed 25 February 2014

The Cenotaph Memorial is a bleak and sombre monument dedicated to the fallen victims of WWI. Originally the monument was constructed of wood and temporary erected for a peace parade. Later, a permanent structure, which you see today at Whitehall was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and erected here in 1920.

The memorial is a hallowing and grim reminder of the tragedies of war and a humble attempt to honour those who lost their lives during WWI. While not an exciting attraction, it is well worth stopping here for a moment if you are in the area, even if to simply pay respects before moving on.

Each year there is a Remembrance Service held here on Armistice Day (11 November). Another note of interest is that Sir Edwin Lutyens Cenotaph has since been reproduced around the world in places like Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Canada.
