Owner description: Leighton House Museum is the former home of the Victorian artist Frederic, Lord Leighton. The only purpose-built studio-house open to the public in the United Kingdom, it is one of the most remarkable buildings of the nineteenth century, containing a fascinating collection of paintings and sculpture by Leighton and his contemporaries.Built to Leighton’s precise requirements, the house was extended and embellished over the 30 years that he lived in it. From modest beginnings it grew into a ‘private palace of art’ featuring the extraordinary Arab Hall with its golden dome, intricate mosaics and walls lined with beautiful Islamic tiles.

“Amazing House”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

Off High Street Kensington and owned by the National Trust.
This is an amazing house once owned by the English painter and sculptor Lord Leighton. Reopened in 2010 after a major refurbishement it shows off Leighton's lavish home which is an exotic work of art in its own right.

“Wonderful Victorian interior”
Reviewed 31 May 2014

The artist's former home was fascinating. The rooms were thoughtfully explained on information boards.

Audio guides would be even better.

“A real gem”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

This is a real gem, a bit further away from the typical tourist area but more than worth the visit. It shows the house of a victorian painter and his taste. In addition, you will see how creative (and successful) persons lived in the victorian area.

“Five Stars for the Opium Den”
Reviewed 13 May 2014

The museum is small, but it's worth a visit if only to see the Arab Hall (what I call the Opium Den). The tiles and the sound of the water. You can just imagine the conversations and activities that must have taken place.

For lovers of the Arts & Crafts movement this is really an adventure.

Regrettably I've never visited in season when the gardens are open, but they look nice from a distance.

“If you are in the Kensington area ...search it out”
Reviewed 8 May 2014

A recent trip to an Albert Hall concert meant that we were staying close by and had 2 or 3 hours to spare.
Inspired by the tv series "Professor Huttons Curiosities" (check it out, an excellent series) we sought out this museum.
Wonderful ......
Amazing interiors and interesting exhibits and all in an air of complete calm, whilst just a few hundred yards from the busy Kensington High Street
If you are in the Kensington area ...search it out.
