Stayed at the hotel for 3 nights with my wife and baby daughter. Great location, just around the corner from Buckingham Palace and many other London attractions. However, it amazes me everytime how much hotels in London cost. Having travelled and lived in many locations around the globe and stayed in numerous 5 star hotels, i find it hard to believe how some of the hotels in London can be considered 5 star. Yes, this hotel has a fabulous location, superb staff, excellent breakfast and reception rooms but, when it comes to the rooms, i was disappointed. Simple things like, Tea/Coffee making facilities were missing, door on the bathroom did not close or lock, lights did not work. Then the add-ons, £29 for breakfast, £40 a night to park the car, £8 for a G&T, £15 for the internet. For me, overall just not worth the money.

I visited London during a recent business trip with my wife and decided to spend one night at the Goring Hotel for the first time before heading back home. We usually stay in London around twice a month for a few days on each visit, so believe we have a reasonable idea of what to expect. As an absolute must, we always expect a high degree of respect, courtesy and appreciation for paying guests regardless of creed, colour, rich or poor.

Although it's a good hotel, unfortunately the image (and our opinion) of the hotel was soon tainted by a few members of staff who probably didn't think they were paid to smile (even with a fake one), or respond to a quick greeting (which certainly wouldn't be stopping them from their duties).

Unfortunately with better courtesy seen from some other London hotels (Covent Garden or Soho still our favourite) I'm afraid it's not really possible to rate this hotel as being an 'excellent' experience on this occasion.

Just arriving from 18 days of pampering on the QM2 we were very please with our choice for a 2 night stay after the cruise in London. Tho the rooms are small, the staff, public rooms, excellent breakfast and location make up for small room...Excellent service from everyone. From Paul & John at the Concierge's desk to the waitstaff in the public rooms....we loved it! Our new place to stay in London.....

The dining room at the Goring Hotel is very pleasant. The tables are far apart and there is only the gentle murmur of people talking quietly. The clientele is white middle-class, somewhat older, not at all fashionable or world shakers. The really bad part is the food. Our party started with whiskey cured smoked salmon. I have never seen a smaller portion of salty fish slurped with olive oil. You could make it last for three mouthfuls if you were trying hard. Next was duck cooked so solidly that we had to ask for serrated knives to make any headway. And how can you make duck so tasteless? Finally, strawberries poached with pepper. It sounded interesting but turned out to be a pointless sweet soggy mess and a waste of perfectly good strawberries. Plenty of professional service, lots of ‘Sir’ and ‘Madam’, but only once in the half-filled room was our party asked if everything was OK. This was by the lowest level of waitress who did not hang around for an answer. Nobody said thank you as we left or even smiled at us. For what we received, it was a terrible price at £47.50 a head. The Goring restaurant has built up a good reputation for itself, but in London which is bursting with excellent restaurants of every kind; it is in truth just a modest and wildly overhyped hotel dining room.

The goring is a top quality establishment close to buckingham palace. The staff here are the friendliest I've come across. There is an emphasis on service here which is quite evident by the way guests are treated. The rooms are really nice as well. Very comfortable beds and nice washrooms as well. Will be staying here again.

Highly recommended. Afternoon tea and lunch is also very tasty.

At the Goring, we felt like we were guests in a well run private manor. From the moment we pulled up in a taxi and all doors were opened simultaneously, the service was seamless and welcoming. They greeted us cheerfully, and were very warm at reception (as opposed to a prior comment). Our rooms were not yet ready, so they offered us drinks and a place to relax while waiting. The family rooms with a connecting door offered plenty of space for our family of 4. The room the adults stayed in was of a nice size with a vanity area, a comfortable chair and on the other side of the room a desk, and large bathroom with heated towel racks. There was a separate tub and shower in our room, the boys had a tub shower combo, and a slightly smaller room and bath. The internet was very fast, but expensive in the rooms. A free computer was available, in quiet small room, but it was often in use. As we left or arrived each day the doormen knew our names, remembered what we were up to, and always asked about our well being. By the end, we considered them friends, and in fact our sons plan to keep in touch by facebook with at least one of them (Rupert)! When we went to eat in the morning each day after the first, they remembered our preferences, and asked if we wanted "the usual" or something different. We never once saw a bill- they seemed to know who we were and where the charges should be posted. With drinks in the bar in the evening, they passed canapes. It felt very civilized- no bills or talk of money. Just a statement at check out. The concierges, Andrew and Paul were extremely helpful in trying to arrange for an unusual request. All in all, a marvelous hotel and a wonderful stay. The Goring has been run by the same family for 100 years- and many of the employees told us they had worked there for many years. They all seemed happy, and so were we.
