“One of my favorite places in all of London”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 January 2006

The former chapel of Ely Palace. St Etheldrada's is wonderful hidden gem of a church. The memory of the English Catholic Martyrs of the Reformation is kept alive here. The stained glass is very impressive. The interior is much larger inside than one would expect from the outside but still not a large church.

Sunday Mass is at 9 am and 11 am. The latter Mass is sung in Latin.

Check out the Crypt as well.

It is easy to wander past the Church. From Holborn Circus head up Charterhouse and keep looking to your left (across from St Andrews) and you will come to Ely Place. Walk down and on your left is St Etheldreda's.

An added weekday bonus is the Old Mitre pub on Ely Court which is a passage that connects Ely Place with Hatton Garden. A wonderful little pub.

“Must See St. Etheldreda's!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2003

Britain's oldest Catholic Church, built in the 1300's. The Crypt is so tranquil, one can only imagine all the history it has seen. Take the time to study all the stories told on the windows. Do some reading on St. Etheldreda's life and the history associated with the martyrs of Tyburn to understand a lot of the pictures.
