“Not the nicest stay”
Reviewed 26 April 2014

After searching endlessly for months for a hotel for a special trip to London with my partner we chose this place as lots of reviews were positive and the location was great.
On arrival I was welcomed at the front desk by a friendly lady. We paid (as we had booked with booking.com) and went to our room. I was excited to see it but that excitement was soon extinguished when we opened the door and immediately welcomed by the bed. Right there. Then couldn't open the door for the bathroom completely as the toilet was there behind it. After observing the size of the room we noticed the giant mess of a hole they'd made when trying to put up a painting. Then I couldn't help but notice the pubic hair taking residence on our bed...(not ours I need to add) these all sound like petty small things but when you have paid more than 100 for a night for a '4 star luxury' hotel these amount to big problems. It was just the general feel of the room - like a prison cell and a bit tatty if I'm honest.
So we went to speak to the lady at reception. Very apologetic and showed my partner two other rooms. If we hadn't already paid I was ready to leave. However, he chose a room slightly bigger than ours so it was ok. On arrival there the immediate realisation was the noise of the floor. Poor people below us!! (And soon to discover poor us from the people above!!)
Feeling happier I settle on the bed to look to my left and see what appeared to be blood smeared on the curtains... My partner insists it's not but it certainly seemed it. Apart from that everything seemed to be in order. Until bed time. We peel back the covers to find something disturbing. Brown marks on the duvet right where our heads would be... Then some black on the pillows like mascara.
We didn't go to reception because it was late and we were tired so just turned the duvet round and hoped it didn't touch us.
Another little thing is that when we came back after a day out they had cleaned the rooms etc all very good... But as a show of carelessness and probably a rush our towels were left in the bath. Again, a small thing but hardly the service we had expected.
So... If you want to stay in a hotel with lovely staff and good location come here. But if you want to sleep In a clean and safe (oh yes, our door didn't lock) place look elsewhere. And don't book through a third party! Enjoy your stay!

Room Tip: Ask for a big clean room and don't book through another site!

Dear Timoune20

I kindly ask that you contact the hotel on fom@grandroylelondon.co.uk We are very alarmed by the points you raise and wish to have further information to resolve these. We obviously strive to give all our guests an enjoyable stay and I am sorry this was not the case for you. We do take to heart and act on every guest comment so I do hope to hear from you in order to understand and resolve your concerns.

I would like clarify all the hotel rooms have key card lock system and these are regularly checked. Your room has been checked following your comment, in addition to our daily housekeeping supervisor check, and is in correct working order. Our system like most other hotels means that a correctly encoded key will open the door from outside, but from inside no key is required nor a manual lock turn, which may have given you the feeling it was not locked. I do wish you could have made us aware, as you did regarding the size of your initial room, that you believed your room to be unlocked during your stay so we could have pacified this concern.

Kind regards

The Grand Royale hotel is tucked into the little knot of streets which sits between Bayswater, Paddington and Hyde Park. There are a LOT of hotels here, ranging from international chains to tired old houses with peeling stucco and fading signs. Somewhere in the midst of these is this surprisingly charming place. Entrance to the rather grand looking townhouse is via steps to an impressive entrance area, which opens into a wood-panelled lounge area. There was no concierge here, despite other hotels in the group having this service, which meant a bit of a struggle getting our luggage into the lobby - but once inside staff were attentive. When we checked in, a trainee was being shown the systems which took a little longer - but our check-in was handled professionally and the staff showed good humour in the process.

It's worth pointing out that London hotel rooms are small - it's an old city, with tightly packed buildings which were almost certainly not built to be modern, accessible hotels. However, given the tight spaces available, a lot is packed into the rooms here. As we'd stayed with the group before we were upgraded to one of their 'Club Rooms'. This meant a little more space including a work area, seating and a slightly larger bed. The room was tidy, well air-conditioned (considering the unseasonable London sunshine!) and clean. As it was Easter, the staff had hidden chocolate eggs around the room as part of an 'egg hunt'. A nice touch which made the place feel a little more homely than many London hotels. There are also lots of other pleasant touches in the Club Room - fresh fruit, cold drinks and chocolates are provided, along with all of the toiletries and essentials you've either forgotten, or which are buried deep in your luggage.

Stepping outside, the hotel is in a pleasant, safe area just a few steps from Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. Queensway Underground station is close by - and there is a wonderfully diverse stretch of shops and restaurants running between Queensway and Bayswater which is worth exploring just to get a sense of what a multicultural city London really is. The parks are superb places to wander or relax, with the Serpentine and Long Water with it's impressive fountains just a short walk away. If you're planning a trip to Knightsbridge or Harrods, don't get fleeced for a taxi or take the indirect bus or tube journey, just set out and walk directly across the park. You won't regret it.

We only stayed for one night here, in transit home from our international trip, but we're already hoping to head here for future weekends in London. It's not too much more expensive than budget hotels around the city, but offers a much more personal and pleasant service.

Room Tip: Some of the ground floor rooms are very close to other buildings and have little light.

its right in the middle of everything, 3 tube stations etc but the room was tiny and with no restaurant! Room was also very small. Considering the cost (over 100 GBP per night) it really is very low value for that,

Dear Simon

It is disappointing to read that the you found your stay low value paying circa £100. Our rates are not set to be the same per date but this would have included VAT and if you do reserve via our own website they also include breakfast, so we do try to always represent a value option in the highly competitive London prices, but I am sorry we did not represent this for you.

The hotel only offers a breakfast service, as we advertise, but our location means we are close to a large variety of lunch and dinner options. We will certainly take on board you feedback to review our services. Thank you for acknowledging our central location to travel options, we are near to both Bayswater (Circle and District lines) and Queensway (Central line), representing three underground lines.

Please do accept our apologies that your found the room too small, we are a highly listed building so this does represent some challenges and unfortunately it would seem you felt this in the sense of space in your room. At Grand Royale we do have a variety of room categories, with Club rooms being our largest, except for the beautiful and very spacious Lily Langtry Suite.

I do hope that we would be able to welcome you back and if we can assist with this, particularly for a Club room, I do ask you contact the hotel on fom@grandroyalelondon.co.uk

Dear Fady

Thank you for mentioning our great location in your review of Grand Royale. Being so close to Hyde Park does mean we are centrally connected for both buses and the underground.

I am pleased that the amenities and cleanliness in your room were well received by you and but sorry that you felt the room small. If you did not, whilst you were here, I do suggest you become a Premier Club Rewards member as one benefit is a complimentary upgrade, subject to availability.

I do hope we can welcome you back to Grand Royale soon

its all down to interpretation and the web is to be taken with a very large pinch of salt -- yes lovely wood finishes in entrance / b'fast room -- bar is soulless - only saw 2 rooms as first was unacceptable due to size and second we excepted as we had little option - basically over rated although the staff were exceptionally pleasant and helpful - could have got a small cottage or even an apartment for the money charged and will in future as they have always been good.

Room Tip: when booking check the size ofr room as they do a budget double that even with a single bed is stupi...

Dear Pedro

I do appreciate the time you have taken to share your comments on Tripadvisor. I am sorry though that the stay was not as enjoyable as we would have hoped for you.

We do have different room categories within the hotel and it is disappointing that the category and room you had that you felt it too small. Other than our beautiful Lily Langtry Suite our Club rooms are the largest within Grand Royale and I do kindly ask that you contact the hotel directly on fom@grandroyalelondon.co.uk so we can assist in make a reservation to this category for you.

Thank you for your kind comments about our team's service and I do look forward to hearing from you.

Location ,location. Situated a short walk from the Queensway tube stop gave us easy access to everywhere in London and only a short bus ride to shopping on Oxford Street. Queensway Road also has everything you need from McDonalds to a drug store and a few grocery stores and restaurants.

The staff were great and kept our bags as we arrived at 6:30am. The core of the hotel has retained its old English atmosphere while the halls and rooms have been renovated with the latest amenities. The bed and breakfast package is a great deal with a fabulous breakfast. It did get a little boring as we stayed for five days ( a bit of variety every few days would be great).

The only downfall was the size of the rooms. Forget the picture on the web site, you could not swing a cat in our room and I have seen larger bathrooms in caravans or trailers. The hand basin fit one hand, we had to sit sideways on the toilet as it was pushed right up against the wall and the shower was a constant wrestling match with the curtain. We even booked directly with the hotel so I would have expected a better room.

If you are like most visitors to London you won't spend much time in the room anyway so as long as you don't expect much from the room the rest of the hotel, staff and location were great.

Room Tip: Ask for a big room.

Dear Paul

Thank you for taking the time to write on Tripadvisor about your recent stay.

It is good to read that everything, particularly our location and team 'were great' apart from our room size.

We do have various room categories but I would recommend our Club rooms if you are indeed staying as many nights as you did as these are the most spacious of our options at Grand Royale. As you say, if you are like most travellers to London and do not spend much time in the room, then the other size categories may work well also.

I do hope when you are next in London we can welcome you back

Best wishes

We booked through 'booking.com' and were really pleased with how easy this was. The hotel were communicative and helpful leading up to our stay and easy to contact if we needed to ask any questions before we arrived.
Upon arrival, we were pleased with how quiet the road is that the hotel is on (just off main road past Hyde Park). The foyer is really impressive and the staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly.
The rooms were spotlessly clean, well appointed and comfortable. breakfast was plentiful and a huge variety of cooked, continental and pastries to choose from.
When we needed a taxi, the staff arranged this for us and again, provided a great service
Checking out was also a breeze and we were sorry to leave.
I would most definitely stay there again - lovely place!
