“Disappointed!!!!”
Reviewed 27 April 2014 via mobile

Good location for tube...and hop on hop off bus right outside.
1/10 for cleanliness...our bathroom stunk of cigarette smoke...if it wasn't for mum next door would've complained but didnt want to have to move her...dont think the carpet had seen a hoover for months. ..bathroom grout was disgusting as was the mold around the window.....no air con. Canteen was just that...reminded me of comprehensive school...but worse...at least the staff in school were polite and friendly...that certainly was not the case with the staff in this canteen....better off finding a cafe.
Would never stay there again there are far better hotels for the money

I last stayed in this hotel about ten years ago, and I'm pleased to say that very little has changed. Royal National is only a ten minute walk from Euston train station, a five minute walk from Russell Square underground station, and has bus stops outside that are served by pretty much every London city tour company. If you are driving, you can park directly beneath in the massive underground car park.

Being quite possibly the largest hotel in London, serving guests from all over the world of every age and interest, you can appreciate that it can be very busy and noisy at times. It tranquillity, decadence and attentive service is your must-have hotel requisite, then don't stay here. If you just want a reasonably priced prime location base to explore from, and don't mind a bit of hustle and bustle, then do!

Rooms are clean, adequately furnished, comfortable, and offer everything you would expect. Plenty of hot water, towels, soap, and loo roll. Instead of quilts, you get nice clean sheets and blankets. I'd luv to be able to recommend a preferable part of the hotel to stay in, but I don't think any one part has any advantage over the other. It's massive, in the middle on London, has roads and other buildings completely surrounding it, so doesn't make any difference.

A tip for breakfast though . . . get there early! It's lovely, continental and full English, but it does get very busy very quickly. I'm sorry to say that different cultures do seem to clash a little here with a difference of opinion in the definition of queuing! You know what I mean!

If you've no plans for eating out in the great metropolis, then this hotel has an abundance of eateries. The hotel chain has other properties in very close proximity, and together offer about a dozen dining choices. Prices are reasonable too, considering.

Basically, I think this hotel is ideal for a short stay in London. For what you pay you can't really grumble, despite all the whinging I've noticed in other reviews. If you insist on 4* or higher, open your wallet further and stay in Knightsbridge!

Oh . . £2.90 for a pint of 1843 lager in the London pub on site. £2.90 in London! for pint!

Room Tip: You get what you are given!

Are you booking a Contiki tour and planning on staying here before your tour starts and ends? Then don't. Contiki will try and sell this to you because the bus leaves from this hotel, but if you book within walking distance of this hotel, you'll be doing yourself a favour.

This is one of the worst places you'll stay in London and not even the Contiki staff stay in this place. It's very outdated with extremely poor customer service and poor living conditions.

The hotel is busy with heaps of tour groups and children who run a muck up and down the halls on School excursions. Rooms are dirty and bathrooms.....well let's just say, if it's raining outside, it would be better to stand in the rain and clean yourself.

You pay Contiki the same amount to stay here as if you were going to book the hotel yourself as if you came off the street. Only downside, breakfast is NOT included with Contiki sales. They also put Contiki travellers in the older rooms as Contiki has that stigma that the travellers trash rooms etc.

But do yourself a favour, book nearby and save yourself the troubles.

Dear all who read this review as a common traveller this hotels service was quite good I must admit. The breakfast not bad but the price for the English breakfast is a bit too pricy (£5:00). In my opinion the triple bedrooms are the best. Though check-in was a bit confusing because there is the north and south I can understand the positioning but not the reason for two sides. The walls of the bathroom are slightly too high. The rooms quite clean. What I didn't like was that if I folded my pajamas neatly on the bed they would do the bed ok but throw my pajamas on my room mates beds.

Room Tip: Best rooms are on the north side of the hotel. Also in the north side best to have room the left muc...

I have stayed at this hotels twice, when visiting London se see football games. The hotel has a good location very close to Russell square metro station. It is also close to many sight, and it is easy to get around. Remember that Russell square metro station is a small station, which tends to get very crowded. There are no escalators here, and is you don’t want to walk approx. 200 steps, you have to wait for elevators.
Royal National hotel is good value for you money. The rooms and bathrooms are big by London standards, and the beds are firm. Some might find them too hard, but I thought they where good, and slept very well.
The breakfast which is included is not worth getting up for, but for an extra £ 5, you can get English breakfast with egg and bacon. I would recommend buying breakfast in one of many diners and coffee shops in the area.
In overall this hotel in no luxery hotel, but it is more than suitable as a base for a London stay for some days. To be able to get a hotel I London with the room size this hotel can offer, you need to pay at least double of what Royal National charges. You also needs to remember that this hotel is very large. Its easy to get lost, and don’t expect exceptional service.

We were using the euro star and had a night in London as it was an early morning train. It was very basic but that's all we needed. We did book a double bed and a single but there was a bit of confusion and ended up with 3 singles, but that wasn't too bad. The only bad this was we packed ready to go took our cases down for breakfast we weren't allowed to take them in, we were sent to another building to put them in the baggage drop however when we got across it was closed and didn't open until half 10. They wouldn't let us keep our cases with us so had to take them back to the room and collect them after breakfast which just seemed a bit daft considering our room was a canny distance. Other than that it was a pleasant stay and easy to find.

My travel agent booked this hotel for me and when I looked at tripadvisor reviews, I was shocked and get myself prepared for the worst. But I was wrong. This is not a bad hotel. No, it's not Hilton (well, you're not paying Hilton's price either), but I think it's a pretty good hotel.

Here are something true about the complaints you heard.

1. Very big hotel, it looks (and feels) like college dorms. With a good number students checking in, it is not a quiet hotel. So, if you are looking for a place to lay back and relax all day long, look somewhere else. But if you're looking for a shelter to sleep at night and shower in the morning, this is not really a problem.

2. Virtually no amenities. You only get a few bars of (strong scented) soaps, and nothing else. But didn't you prepare all those from home?

3. Breakfast is a joke. Depending on the time you get there, the place can be really jam packed. Staff at the breakfast room are terrible. They talk to you in a very polite language but with a very authoritative (if not aggressive) tone. "You need to get your food before pick up the table sir. Everyone is doing the same. If there is no table available, you'll have to wait (with tray full of foods and drinks in your hand)" However, if you get there at the right time (say 9:00 am or after), then that shouldn't be a problem. Food is plain (to say it nicely). If it makes you fell any better, just think of it as a room without breakfast. Go to Giraffe Cafe in the nice shopping mall across the street, have a full breakfast for 5:99 pounds and save yourself the hassle.

On the good side, the room is clean. They clean up the room everyday and replace all the towels. It has no air cond., but you can open the window. Avoid this hotel in the hot humid summer time.

Desk staffs are okay. Some are grumpy, but most of them are helpful.

Location is great (and pretty safe). Tube station is very near. Lots of restaurants around (Western, Chinese, Italian, Indian, you name it). 24-hour Tesco metro is across the street. There is a nice shopping mall nearby (cross the street and go straight for one small block and turn left) with good places to eat and a huge sainbury store. There's a coin-operated laundry within 10 minutes walk.

Will be there again (but probably not in summer).
