“Closest thing to a New York Deli”
Reviewed 21 March 2013

If you're finding all the usual sandwich chains just too boring, yoiu'll love Birleys. It's the closest thing I've seen in London to a NY deli...not as good, but not far off. Fantastic food, from hot salt beef sandwichhes, to delicious soups. It's a bit pricier than the chains, but you definitely get what you pay for. my only issue is that the system for getting served, and paying, is a mess. Once you've waited for your food, you have to queue to pay, but as there's no clear queuing system, people just jump in which will no doubt end in tears at some point.

“Lunch time”
Reviewed 24 February 2013

I go to the one in Canary Wharf for lunch from time to time, have to say that it's not the cheapest but not many places in Canary Wharf are but the sandwich is always well stacked and the meat is well cooked.

“Great breakfast sandwiches”
Reviewed 5 January 2013

We visited Birley sandwiches on our recent visit to St.Paul's in London (which is just across the square) and were very much impressed by the delicious food and the service. My sausage and egg sandwich was a great start me up on a cold London morning and great fuel for a day of museum and church viewing!

“My choice for breakfast goodies in the City”
Reviewed 10 December 2012

I discovered Birleys years ago, when this shop was opposite the exit to Moorgate before the days of Crossrail construction. The fact that I now walk that bit further to the relocated site in Copthall Avenue shows they must be doing something right.

Sandwich shops in the City seem to fall into two categories; 'traditional' greasy-spoon style cafes and up-market sandwich bars. Birleys is firmly in the latter camp. No, it's not the cheapest but the food is tasty and freshly made.

They do breakfast stuff from first thing and then lunch stuff from mid-morning, with some truly amazing sandwiches; huge, in an incredible range of breads and with some fantastic ingredients. There is also a salad bar where you can have your own preference of salad made to order.

They've recently moved the coffee machine from the front of the shop to behind the serving bar at the back and have gone from handmade coffees to ones that emerge from a machine - they aren't as nice anymore and so that loses a circle for the rating.

Apart from that, great tasting and fresh food.

“Great for an early breakfast”
Reviewed 29 November 2012

Open early (before 06:00) friendly and efficient staff. Breakfast sandwiches made to order. Very clean and well decorated with interesting and authentic memorabilia to look at while you wait for your bacon sandwich to be prepared!
