“Very good experience!”
Reviewed 9 August 2014

Our experience with the Grange Rochester was very good. We stayed two nights without air conditioning but found it to be very comfortable with the windows open. Then we stayed another two nights with air conditioning but the trade-off for A/C is that those rooms are only on the 5th floor and the elevator only goes to the 4th floor. However, the stairs are easy for that one flight up and the room there was larger and more comfortable. The location of this hotel is terrific -- within walking distance of Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Victoria Station, etc. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The food we had in the Pub was very good -- we did not eat in the restaurant since it was very expensive (although everything in London is expensive!!). Wifi is an extra charge, which we thought was totally ridiculous in this era! We would definitely stay at this hotel again in the future.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 5th floor have air conditioning but the elevator only goes to the 4th floor -- however...

I am pleased you enjoyed the Grange Rochester Hotel and found its location good for visiting some of London's finest tourist attractions. The wifi issue is currently being addressed. We look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you back in the future.

There was no mini-bar in my exec room. There was no bedside table. Presumably this was because the bed was only one foot off the floor. There is no air-conditioning. It was hot and the fan provided merely moved the warm air around. There was no wine glass - I had to use the tumbler provided in the bathroom. I had to ask for an iron and board to be delivered. I had to ask how to logon to the wifi because the instructions in the room were incorrect. They charge for the wifi - it is fast though. The ridiculous e-check-in and check-out. The fact that I had to chase for my invoice to be sent by email. The limited room service menu - who serves steak in onion gravy? The inadequate TV selection - you couldn't even get to BBC1. The house wine (£18) which I wouldn't serve to my worst enemy. The power socket that didn't work, requiring me to unplug the blessed fan. The fact that the bathroom was so small I had to constantly do a dance with the door....and try not to trip over the bed on the way out. Like I say, just the little things.

It is a great location though....

Room Tip: Find a different hotel.

We stayed here in July, so a bit muggy and warm. No air conditioning in room, but room was clean and staff was friendly. Great location, close to sights and Westminster area. We would stay here again, but probably not on hot days.

I stayed next door at the refurbished Grange Wellington a couple of weeks earlier and wish that I had returned there. This is a shame, because the Grange Rochester's location is similarly excellent and the staff are a jolly and helpful crew. I also made the mistake of peeping at one or two empty rooms whilst housekeeping staff had the doors propped open, and it became evident that I probably had the worst single box room in the building. Small, stuffy, old, hideously cramped and with a grubby toilet and shower cubicle. Frugally equipped. The bed was very narrow and the mattress was a candidate for Sothebys. Like the smart Grange Wellington next door, the WiFi is a paid extra and it is predatory in terms of pricing. Breakfast was overpriced for standard enough options. Grange Hotels need to act fast and smarten this place up, introducing climate control. It isn't enough for Nellie to respond to reviews here by suggesting people go next door if they want something less frayed. Pricing doesn't currently reflect the absolute gulf in difference between the two properties.

Dear Reviewer,

Thank you for your feedback regarding the Rochester Hotel. We are sorry to hear your stay was not as you had expected. Your feedback is important and I thank you to taking the time to review your visit.

The Rochester Hotel is more traditional than the newly refurbished Wellington Hotel, with the buildings being very different in layout and build. We do hope to refurbish the Rochester Hotel as soon as we can, although dates are not currently confirmed.

Our guests have varying preferences in terms of decor, layout, location, budget and the like. Whilst the Rochester Hotel may not have been what you had expected, I do hope we will see you back at the Wellington Hotel in the future.

With kind regards,

Mary

Really enjoyed our stay while we were London. Rooms were a bit small, but we were out sightseeing most of the time so it wasn't an issue. Rooms were very clean & the staff was very attentive during our stay. Would definitely stay here again!

We booked five rooms for an overnight trip in June. The rooms were clean with tea and coffee making facilities. The staff were friendly and the hotel was very near to all the tourist attractions. Overall it was really nice.

The price was very reasonable for being so near to everything and included continental breakfast although we could have paid extra for a cooked breakfast.

The hotel was quiet and in a very nice spot on the corner of a square where cricket was being played when we arrived.

I would recommend this hotel if you want to be within a 15 minute walk of Westminster.

Stayed last night on a business trip to London. Hotel itself is very nice to look at and excellent interior. Check in very fast. Was upgraded to a twin room which was a nice touch. Room itself spotless and fit for purpose. Breakfast lovely and quick check out. If it wasn't so hot -which is nature's fault not the hotels - it would have been excellent stay but given the heat and no air con it was a tad uncomfortable. There was a fan but didn't really help so left window open but traffic woke me up just after 4 am so had to close it again. I understand they can't fit AC but this was the only annoyance....All in all though besides the heat excellent hotel excellent location excellent staff so would recommend it - but not in the summer!

Good to hear you enjoyed the hotel and the location. It is indeed a pity all our rooms are not fully air conditioned.
