“Tip top for the Jubilee”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 November 2012

As we had won tickets for the Queen's Jubilee Concert a hotel had to be found and as the concert was all day at Buck House a hotel in St James was ideal.

The hotel is tucked away very near the Ritz on St James side and close to Jermyn Street and Fortnums.

It is an excellent business and leisure 5 star with great service. Nothing is too much trouble - including helping us with lots of luggage in the rain onto Piccadilly when all the road were closed for security on Diamond Jubilee weekend.

Whilst rooms are on the small side they are perfectly located with a very smart opulent bathroom.

Little extras include water and fresh fruit in your room.

Breakfast is lovely with a great selection of breads, fruits and cereals, cooked breakfast options were also good.

The location is awesome and well worth the extra cost for that and the service alone.

Room Tip: Because it is in a quite cul de sac all rooms are very quite and the location is superb

An excellent stay as always while at the St James. Rooms are charming and the staff are wonderful. A great value in London. Very well located and within easy walking distance to the best shopping and the sites.

My wife and I had a wonderful stay at the St Jamesl.

From our very pleasant check in with Ava to the many
helpful trip plans and tips from Tony, the attentive
service from the breakfast staff, the room service who
brought us fresh wine glasses, the maid service, and
the doormen who managed to find us a taxi in the midst
of a rainstorm, we were delighted with our visit. We
appreciated the breakfast food that was prepared for our early
departure. The Black Forest cake for our anniversary was
a very nice touch on top of everything else.

They made our trip one of the best we've had in years.

We recently stayed at the St. James Hotel and Club in London this past September and had a most wonderful stay. The hotel is situated just a few blocks from Picadilly and is ideally located for walking and shopping in Mayfair. Formerly a gentlemen's club built in the Victorian period the St. James has been recently updated and the rooms, the restaurant, and the other public areas are beautifully done. Comfort, excellent service, and exquisite dining are but a few of the wonderful qualities of this fabulous hotel. The staff is friendly and are consummate professionals. We highly recommend this hotel for a memorable visit to London.

We stayed for three nights. We had booked an executive king room, but were upgraded to a junior suite...beautiful. It was lovely to have the extra space. Room 502 was very quiet, very clean, and the bed was truly amazing. We found the staff to be pleasant and helpful. The breakfast is basic but filling. Location is perfect, hotel is tucked down a side street so it's away from all the road noise. Hotel is walking distance to all major attractions, and tube station just around the corner. A great hotel if you want a quiet retreat in a very busy city.

We have stayed more than four times at St. James which clearly scores in terms of location and decor. However, depending on who you meet at reception, you can get a nasty surprise. Generally speaking, the older staff are polite, polished and professional whilst the younger staff, especially at reception, are mostly incredibly aloof and snobbish. Basic standards of politeness, such as greetings and good byes, appear to be too much to ask of some of the young ladies. I have rarely come across such unprofessional behaviour.

Rooms offer a nice decor, yet the windows do not insulate from cold air or outside noise. The same can be said of the doors, which have gaps to the floor. The German hotel management is reflected in the fact that the hotel is cleaner than most five stars in London. The beds are of fantastic quality. The bathroom plumbing needs sorting out as the water - both in the sinks as well as in the tubs - flows down very slowly (and were were on three different floors).

Breakfast is good, but not amazing with a buffet that covers the basics of a four star hotel, yet nothing more. A huge disappointment actually and certainly not in line with British or German luxury standards.

Overall, most reception staff do not make you feel welcome and many lack the professionalism displayed in other Althoff properties. We have been to Bensberg and Lerbach many times for the spa and dinner (since part of my family comes from Cologne) and St. James is not in the same class. Indeed, it is average within the luxury bracket of London's hotels. I feel the Andaz and the Connaught are better.

The staff at this hotel will always be aces with me. My husband became ill while we were on vacation. Late at night the staff's care and attention to his and my needs was amazing. They arranged for a kind doctor to come to our hotel room at 10 p.m. and promptly. The doctor then arranged for a prompt ambulance to come to the hotel. The emergency professionals came to our room, quietly and calmly assessed the situation and took us into the ambulance for our ride to the hospital. The hotel staff on duty at 11:30 p.m. were kind, caring and respectful not just to my husband and me but to the emergency staff as well. The Emergency staff remarked to me in the ambulance how everyone at the hotel was willing to help, treated them with respect and honestly cared. When we came back to the hotel a day later, there were calls from the hotel staff to see that we were ok. They made a very stressful time for us less stressful. I cannot put a price on what this level of service meant to us.

Room Tip: The hotel location is great because it is minutes walk from the beautiful Mayfair and St. James area...
