After good experiences at the Athenaeum Piccadilly and a poor one at Sheraton Park Lane, we went a little up-market for a one-night stay at the St James Hotel and Club. The welcome and lunch in the Michelin restaurant was superb and we could not fault the service in any of the public rooms. Evening cocktails could not have been better.
The big disappointment was the ground floor location of our bedroom at the rear of the hotel, where there was absolutely no view at all. Room 110 is sited next to a large air-con system and even though it stopped late at night, there was no escaping its background sound at all other times.
The quality and cleanliness of the bed and bath rooms were exceptional, and the bathroom was cleaned and all used towels replaced by the turn-down staff while we were away for the evening.
We raised the problem of the bedroom location on check-out and were told that our preferences of a quiet room at a higher level would be entered into the hotel's reservation system. BUT THEY SHOULD HAVE TOLD US ABOUT THE POOR LOCATION OF THE ROOM BEFOREHAND. It was too late to change it after lunch as we had an urgent appointment.More
