“Hidden Gem.. St James's is a lesson in how to do Luxury”
Reviewed 11 January 2010

This is notably a hotel with a difference. It ticks all the boxes and more on what you expect from a luxury hotel. What sets it apart is the attention to detail, and how special I felt being there... as if the hotel opened shop just for me. From the warm and genuine welcome at reception to the pristine suite to the little touches like the nice bottle of champagne left in our room. It was just a pleasurable stay and I could easily have stayed longer but for the fact we had other obligations. It was the perfect place to relax and get away from in all even though we we were right in the centre of London ...we were were in our our cocoon of luxury.
An important point is how we never once felt awkward about another guest having been in the room before us which is something that you cannot put your finger on but so many 5 star hotels fail to capture.
My standards are exacting and it is important you know how good a job you did in meeting them.
Please continue with your ethos and as I am sure you will keep your guests coming back. I know for sure I cannot wait to return.

Having stayed at a number of London's best hotels my overall opinion is very good although the check in was average (for a 5 star). The room was stylish and clean but the air con was broken and there was no water in the mini bar, minor things but should be standard in an hotel of this calibre.

Would stay their again if only for the fantastic cocktails and helpful barman!

We were welcomed warmly by reception staff and shown up to our very beautiful room, 403.
It's not often that rooms look better in reality than on the hotel's website but here our expectations were exceeded!
The sitting room had a fireplace, a settee, 2 armchairs, a lovely antique desk, fine art on the walls, a murano chandelier, silk wallpaper and a very relaxing ambience.
The bedroom is best described as exquisite ! The enormous bed was beautifully dressed and is probably the most comfortable we've ever slept in. I don't know what fabric the sheets was made from but again the softest most comfortable fabric we 've ever experienced! Pillows and duvet were top of the range down and our room was very quiet so we slept well.
Lighting here also featured a beautiful chandelier from Murano and the bedside and dressing table lights came from that island too.
The bed frame and posts were black, tipped with silver, and the soft beige range of fitted wardrobes and lovely brown and beige carpets gave both rooms and the bathroom a soft art deco flavour.
The bathroom was definitely art deco inspired and was a lovely luxurious space with a rainforest walk in shower, a deep bath set in a black granite surround and inset television, and 2 wash basins. We had an abundance of soft towels, bathrobes, and slippers and some lovely Ren products.
This room was also well lit and featured hidden lighting around the bath which was reflected back in the gorgeous floor.
Really with accommodation like this it is hard to go out but rest assured the location is quite seductive. St James is a fabulous place with many beautiful, traditional shops to peruse but it is also very close to Green Park, St James's Park and Palace, the Royal Academy, The Ritz and, conveniently for us the New Year Parade set out from just in front of that hotel.
Staff were well trained and helpful throughout. The Concierge sets the standard for being exceedingly helpful, knowledgeable and elegant! His tailcoat added to his charisma!
Breakfast perhaps needs a some fine tuning as on New Year's day service was a little haphazard but this is mostly down to the difficult space they choose to serve it in.
They use 3 smallish rooms joined by the long and narrow bar which acts as a corridor to those helping themselves to the buffet. It's true to say that these spaces are beautifully appointed but not terribly practical when the hotel is busy.
We were served excellent coffee and chose a cooked breakfast of bacon and tomatoes which was very good. A minor irritation though was the piped music.
Our room was serviced to a high standard twice a day, but lacked a bottle of water at bedtime which seems odd when the hotel has an obvious pride in attention to detail.
Our room service meal was promptly delivered, and was a joy to eat and unusually was charged at a very reasonable price.

Unfortunately the hot water supply was still being troublesome during our visit but check with the hotel before you make your reservation. Apparently there are still some problems with the heating too but we were lucky enough not to experience them!

It seemed to us that this hotel comes completely without gimmicks of any kind, it just relies on exquisite style, comfort and high standards of service. I would like to encourage you to try it out for yourselves and to offer our Congratulations to the staff for giving us a wonderful 2 nights.

This hotel is amazing! It is perfect, I would recommend it to anyone, and would definately stay there again! The decor is beautiful, the furnishings in the rooms are of a very high standard, and the artwork found around the hotel is stunning. We had breakfast the next morning, which was gorgeous.
The staff are so friendly, and cannot do enough to help you! The reception staff were so welcoming, they showed us to our rooms and also showed us how to work the heating etc. They were so polite and made our experience very personal.
A special mention goes to George Hunter - the Reservations Manager - he was very accomodating and extremely helpful with our booking request. Thank you George for making our stay so wondeful!
The thing I love most about the hotel is the location - it's situated right in the centre of London, a ten minute walk from Buckingham Palace and the West End. Yet it is tucked away in a quiet little side street just round the corner from the Ritz, so it is very private. It is also stunning to look at from the outside! We could not quite believe it was our hotel when we arrived!
I look forward to staying at this lovely 5 star hotel again!

I recently stayed at the St James Hotel and Club with a colleague of mine from work. We were going to see Priscilla Queen of the Desert starring Jason Donovan at the Palace Theatre in London. I booked this hotel as it was recommended to me. What a wise choice that was. From the moment I arrived at the Hotel the Doorman took our luggage from us and the very attentive Reception Staff could not do enough for you during our stay, all in all this made our stay magnificent. The decor of the rooms and corridors is simply stunning and throughout the hotel is luxuriously furnished. I cannot tell you how good and excellent at Customer Service the Staff at this Hotel are! Special Thanks must go to Mr George Hunter who really does excel with his Guest Relations.

When my boyfriend suprised me with a weekend away in London, I was exited about what type of hotel we would be staying in. From the moment we arrived it was beyond my expectation and the service was consistantly fantastic!!
On arrival the door was held open and we were greeted with a smile, shown to the reception desk, to be again greeted with another smile from the lovely young lady behind reception. Our room however was not ready, so we were shown to the bar area to wait until the room was ready. The bar man asked us what we were wanting and gave my boyfriend a reccomendation on his favourate drink- which he loved!! By now we were relaxed and ready for our break, so when the receptionist took us to our room (Terrace suite) and showed us around we were nothing but impressed. The decor and sophistication of the room wow'ed us, it was spacious and met all of our needs, creating the perfect atmosphere for romance. We went out in the evening and returned to the hotel for champagne cocktails, which I would recommend (posh nosh to be precise). The whole weekend was fantastic, the hotel and the staff could not do enough, it was relaxing, warm and a perfect place for romance!!

This hotel is in an excellent location and should be very quiet as it is tucked away. We asked for a quiet room which turned out to be a mistake as we were put on the top floor where there was a very noisy vent somewhere outside on the roof. It may not have even belonged to this hotel but it was so loud that after a few hours we asked to move room. The staff were lovely and we had no problem moving. They seemed to be aware of the problem. From the new room we could still hear the vent but it wasn't nearly as loud. Unfortunately when we turned off the air conditioning it didn't seem to stop the noise from that so although it was much better than the other room it wasn't ideal either. It is a great pity as this really is a very nice hotel and the staff are very friendly.
