This small hotel with a good restaurant was the perfect location for business in the City. Arriving on a Sunday morning well before the room was ready, the staff helped us out. They were knowledgeable about what to do on a weekend and what interesting things were nearby. Room was comfortable, although my shower stall was smaller than a London phone booth. Wifi worked with no trouble. The bed and mattress was fine for me as I like it firm. The A/C was a bit dodgy given that the weather varied from cold and raining to warmish and sunny. All in all, the A/C was fine after a little bit of adjustment.
I was there June 9-11 and noticed no street excavation as Zoobeefoo commented, so perhaps they completed their work.

You are near St. Paul's church and the Bank underground station.

While the location is good enough and the staff always smiles, when I balance the entire experience, I cannot rank this hotel better than 2 out of 5. and I love historic, traditional hotels!

If you are thinking of a holiday right now in mid June, 2013, DON'T book here! There is deep excavation road work ongoing and no peace after 8:30 a.m. each day. The noise, dust, vibrations, and views out the windows are mind-numbing and disgusting. The jackhammers sound and feel like they are in your room.

But wait, there's more! I booked over four months in advance, paying IN FULL for a slight discount that still left the rate at $700 per night for a studio room for my daughter and I. I paid for the room for one night before we even arrived, just to avoid begging for early check in and potentially starting off with a disappointment. I asked that the room be fitted with two twin beds and was assured this would await us. (Two queens was not an option.) I confirmed this arrangement the week before arrival. Upon arrival, the room was king bedded with sheets, comforter, decorative throw, pillows, and a chest abutting the foot of the bed. It was fixed. Sort of.

The hallways and room had an unpleasant odor the source of which I speculated arose from a) age, and b) taking the hotel non-smoking by the chemicals method. The rooms are incredibly dark and colorless, truly dismal. There's always a reason, an explanation. I'm sure the color scheme is "neutral" and the sad, dim, light fixtures are eco-friendly. There is almost no natural light available. With every lamp, every available light, including the bathroom and closest lights turned on, and the drapes completely open, including the sheer privacy fabric, you could almost read. While the construction workers and neighboring office building looked on.

The cleaning staff never really got the hang of two beds for two adult women. The bath tub would not drain properly and the toilet wouldn't flush properly. Both of us sneezed and coughed uncontrollably each day, symptoms that disappeared as soon as we left the room. On our second or third day, after a hard day of walking throughout London, we readied ourselves for bed and discovered a layer of black particle of unknown material all over the white sheets. It was under the a/c vent box, about three feet in width, so the black dust lightly covered the head of one bed and partially covered the other. Fearing black mold or archaic built up material shaken loose by construction, or worse, we called the front desk, explained the situation and asked to be moved. A representative arrived promptly, verified, and rushed away to investigate the availability of another room. It was emphasized, without our asking, that of course we could only be moved to another room of the same size and rate and that only one such room was available, on the lowest floor. We were helped with our move. This second room was even darker and we lost our desk phone and gained an even greater shortage of electrical outlets in working order. An engineer was required to get electrical power to my laptop computer at the work desk.

At breakfast, if you are a group of businessmen, you may enjoy attentive service, but women did not enjoy service. Even with only 4 - 5 tables being served, I still waited 5-10 minutes each morning to obtain the check. That's 5-10 minutes after finishing, having the plate cleared, packing away my FT and looking pointedly around for the check. The wait staff eyes were on the tables with the men with briefcases. All of the wait staff.

The people at the front desk always smile and always try to be responsive, but the hotel seems understaffed. The list of careless and shabby experiences goes on and on - wrong newspaper delivered after the check-in request for FT, etc. etc.

We booked because this is the hotel recommended by my husband's law firm whose London office is very close by. Due to discussions about the corporate rate and the advanced purchase rate, the hotel was aware of the corporate relationship with the firm.

We expected to be pleased, we wanted to be pleased, we were pleasant and cordial to hotel staff at all times, and we communicated honestly throughout the stay. Which makes it all the more disappointing. The One Aldwych, The Four Seasons, both of which we've patronized, would have made things right. This hotel, recently acquired by Marriott, simply did not.

Dear Zoobeefoo

Thank you for your recent review of Threadneedles, albeit most regrettable than your stay with us did not meet expectations. The lack of attention to your reservation requests are disappointing and please rest assured that is not indicative of our normal preparations.
The hotel offers twin rooms with two single beds and these should have been arranged as per your request. Sadly, none of the Hotels 74 bedrooms are designed to accommodate two queen sized beds. Your comments pertaining to the size of rooms, décor and environment are also noted. Whilst the hotel has recently undergone a soft refurbishment of all bedrooms, we appreciate that this was not to your liking. Following the refurbishment, we have recently reviewed all photography on our website and as such, our guests may view this prior to confirming reservations.

The maintenance and housekeeping deficiencies have since been addressed in the rooms occupied by yourselves and we regret that you experienced these matters.
Please rest assured that your comments surrounding the breakfast service have also been addressed with the team.

Should the opportunity arise, we would be delighted to welcome you back to Threadneedles and in restoring your faith in the high levels of service we provide.

Kind regards,

Michael Hewson

I was very impressed with the excellent customer service Agne K provided when I checked in on Friday 10 May. The experience started off my stay perfectly despite the hotel not having received my booking from the agent.

I booked earlier that same evening as a last minute treat. I provided my email confirmation from the agent and Agne very quickly and without a fuss checked me in. Agne is an asset to the hotel. I wish every check in experience was so pleasant, friendly and efficient!

The hotel and my room were beautiful. The room service steak sandwiches were excellent. I am pleased to say check out was as efficient as check in.

I can't wait to stay again.

Arrived real early in the morning at 7am but reception was very nice to allow an early check in.
It gives an opportunity to freshen up after an overnight flight. Small gestures like this is most welcome.
Hotel stay was uneventful, rooms were clean, quiet, and modern. Spacious for a London Central location.
Ok, price is always a premium in that area but location is superb, so can't complain.

who could ask for a better weekend away, a truly special place we had to ask where it was and we were no more than 50 meters away. A hidden treasure, reassuringly expensive and worth every penny. i strongly recommend trying the breakfast in bed an indulgent pleasure and an experience for the eye and the taste buds. also make sure you make the most of the hotel spend some time soaking up the atmosphere in the reception area and bar.

My husband and I stayed here as an anniversary treat. We booked via lastminute.com as a top secret hotel, so a pleasant suprise. We were given an upgrade on arrival which was very unexpected and the room was amazing, spacious, huge comfy bed, great mini bar. The location of the hotel is great with everything within easy reach. Service at breakfast was probably the only thing that really let the hotel down with a few small hiccups but overall, I would definitely reccomend. The building itself is quite stunning. We hope to return.

We don't usually stay in five star hotels so not sure what they should be like, but for us this was a great hotel with lots of finishing touches that made it special. Location is great and really close to Bank underground which was really convenient. The hotel looks private and quiet from the outside and inside it remains the same. The reception area is understated with us not being sure if we were in it of not. We were able to check in early which was appreciated and the staff were friendly without being overly familiar. Having read some reviews I had reservations about the staff making us feel we didnt belong but this was not the case.
Our room was probably the most basic this hotel offers but we were really impressed with it. Everything we needed in terms of toiletries, coffee machine (some basic instructions would be good!) and reasonable mini bar if you wanted anything. The bathroom was superb, spacious and considerately furnished to the guest. We didn't eat here as we were elsewhere but the choices looked good and there is an all night room service option which I liked the idea of if we were late back. The quality of the furnishings in our room was high, and had a wonderful nights sleep being woken by our alarm two hours after we normally wake up. It was very quiet in our room and the black out curtains meant no natural wake up call from the sun rising.
Check out was easy and friendly, my only comment would be that the staff did not ask anything re our stay or engage with us much but they were busy and they had computer problems.
For what we paid, it was good value in central London and worth paying the extra for what we considered to be a really nice hotel. The bar closes quite early but there is an honesty bar in the lounge if required. perhaps because it was a weekend, it felt very low key but we were happy with that. We will book here again without a hesitation when we next visit as for us the hotel itself was a treat and made our weekend so much more special. Can't understand some of the negative reviews, maybe people have much higher standards than us, or perhaps they are just demanding and overly critical.

Dear JoLeicester

We're delighted that your recent stay with us was everything you wished for!

The team appreciate the kind comments and we're thrilled your stay was a memorable experience.

We thank you for your feedback in regards to the hotel and will address any areas for improvements. With the recent addition of Nespresso machines in all guest bedrooms, we're implemented some directions on how to use these.

The Honesty Bar is a lovely way to unwind after a late evening and we're glad you were able to relax under the Threadneedles Dome - a most calming environment.

We look forward to seeing you in the not too distant future; hopefully for a longer visit.

Kind regards, Michael
