“Fabulous weekend!”
Reviewed 1 April 2011

Had a wonderful weekend at the the Grange City Hotel whilst celebrating my neice's 16th Birthday. We had great views. The rooms are spacious very clean with comfortable beds. The hotel is in a great location for seeing the sites. The weather was lovely so we enjoyed taking the boat trips into central London. We all enjoyed an early morning swim and breakfast. Fun weekend!

We got a last minute deal - £97 for a double room and continental breakfast which for the location is pretty good. The price probably colours my view of the hotel. It is a comfortable hotel; the bed was large and comfy and we slept well. The room was very large for a standard and so I wonder if we had been upgraded. it had a large settee and coffee table and a couple of easy chairs. No view though - the room overlooked one of the platforms on Fenchurch St Station which actually had its own charms. The room was incredibly well soundproofed, however, and we couldn't hear anything from the station.. The rooms had a bit of an old fashioned feel to them, trying - and not succeeding - to get a modern take on an art deco look.. The staff were friendly and polite. The place was clean. The breakfast was perfectly adequate without exactly setting the Thames on fire. But then I'm not much of a breakfast eater. What we really did enjoy was the leisure centre in the basement. There is a 25m pool which is for swimming only; plenty of good equipment in the gym and sauna, steam and aromatherapy rooms. There's also a spa which we didn't sample. The location is good for the City and public transport. If you can get a cheap deal it's a real winner. I might have been unhappy if I'd had to pay the full price though.

I looked forward to staying in a 5 star hotel which looked very posh on the ground floor and in the reception area, however when going in my room i was disappointed. The room was small and like any other hotel room, nothing very special or unique about it and definetely not worth the money paid. Very clean and beautiful spa and pool.

We stayed here in March 2011. The hotel has that '90's opulent' feel. Staff were nice, the rooms are a decent size with a large bed, sofa and about ten pillows. The rooms are also quiet which was a good job as ours faced directly on to Platform 4 of Fenchurch St Station...This didn't bother us as we we're only there for one night. Definitely worth the £100 a night last min deal we got. Bargain!

Overview and bargain price
This is the second time we've stayed at this hotel and it really is a great hotel. Although it is classed as five star it is not in the same league as The Ritz or the Savoy but the price is also not in the same league - so what do you expect. You can get some really good bargains here so check out the deals before booking.

Location
It is in a great location, just around the corner from Tower Hill tube station - so you can get anywhere in London on the tube, but it is miles away from the tacky touristy parts of west London. You could also pop around the corner to Fenchurch Street Station and have a day out at the seaside in Southend -on-Sea if you fancy a change from city life.

Staff
Staff are friendly and helpful although check in/check out can be slow. A special mention for the the concierge who was very helpful.

Rooms
The rooms are large and well decorated (lots of photos on tripadvisor) but don't have the supersize plasma screens (but do have a BOSE wave) but why would you want to watch TV when you're in London? Bathrooms are a bit on the small side.
Some rooms overlook the train station so if you expect a view of the Tower of London you maybe disappointed - Ask if you want a view of ToL. Even though the rooms overlook the train station they are still reasonably quiet.

Breakfast/Restaurants/Bar
Breakfast is good, the usual all you can eat/self service buffet fare and cooked full English - I really wouldn't bother paying extra for the cooked breakfast. I didn't visit the restaurants as I tend to steer clear of hotel restaurants - much better to try one of the local restaurants - butlers wharf has plenty of choice and it just over the bridge. The hotel bar is OK, as usual slightly overpriced so if you fancy a drink just pop around the corner to the Wetherspoons pub.

Overall a top hotel.

We booked this hotel on Last Minute for a really good price and after reading the description were really looking forward to a 5 star night in London. The location is fantastic, a minute walk from the tube station and a two minute walk to the Tower of London. Our check in was ok, very busy when we arrived, although no-one showed us to our room or offered to take our luggage,we were waved in the general direction of the lift to our floor.
The room was very clean and spacious, on our booking confirmation it said that an ipod docking staion would be one of the ammenities, there was only a cd player and radio. The Molton Brown toiletries are lovely and the thickly glazed windows are fantastic for keeping the noisy London traffic out, so we did sleep wonderfully.
We ordered room service late in the evening, and the food left a lot to be desired, my pizza looked and tasted as though it was frozen and had come from Iceland, not worth the £13.50 by any means. Based on our room service food we decided to pass on breakfast which was priced at £23.00 each!
Another reason we chose this hotel was because of the spa, the pictures on the website were beautiful and I couldn't wait to relax before we went out for supper. We had no robes in our room so called down to the spa to ask if they were provided, I was told rather sternly 'we have towels and locker keys'! We did not time our trip to the spa well, as we arrived a large group of loud women on a hen party arrived, greatly disturbing the quiet. Even in the steam room you could her them at the other end of the pool, complete disregard for people trying to swim or relax. The steam room was dirty with a nasty greenish stain on the floor and it had far too much eucalyptus fragance in; stinging both mine and my partners eyes and I could taste it in my throat for a good time after. The sauna was old and tired, with bits of newspaper all over and a big stain on the floor. We decided to end our spa trip after only 15 minutes and as we left the spa a rather rude employee pushed through the doors as I opened them, knocking into me with no appology.
Our check out was slow, with just two receptionist it was obvious why, however the receptionist was very friendly and could not be faulted. The concierge service worked well and the hotel will store your luggage for you after check out should you wish to explore London. The hotel would have been greatly overpriced had we payed full rate, however with the late deal we got it was fine for what we needed.

Stayed here for a week-end with friends. Great location. Rooms were brilliant - we were upgraded. They were all luxurious and spacious. Superb swimming pool.
Taxi rank just outside the hotel which was very handy. Underground very close by. Staff all very friendly. Breakfast fine. Some staff (waiting staff and housekeeping) had limited English but too big a problem. Have already booked to go back - can't get a better recommendation than that!
