“Appalling! Dirty! Gross!”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

How they can call this a hotel is behind me. Trading standards should be called! Dirty rooms, rude staff, if hell exists then this hotel must surely be it! I would rather be skinned alive and then dipped in vinegar than stay in this hotel again!

Room Tip: Find yourself a park bench, you'll enjoy it more

Never ever stay here, got to the hotel at 4 in the morning and the "receptionist" was absolutely no help, showed no interest, barely lifted his head, pointed towards our room but offered no help to find it. The room itself was falling apart, you walk in and the door barely opens because the bed is in the way and at the end of the bed is a sink!!! No duvet on the filthy bed just a sheet and stains all over both. A shared bathroom /shower room which is disgusting. How are they able to get away with treating people like this. All reviews describe exactly what my girlfriend and I had to put up with. I would have left if it wasn't so late. An absolute joke of a "hotel".

The best part of the hotel was the exterior – which I suggest is the ONLY place you view this hotel from. And whilst it is forgiveable for the exterior to be having work done (it needs it), it certainly isn't ideal for paying guests to walk through dust, swearing workmen and under ladders.

My first impression inside the Lonsdale Hotel was my 'greeting' by the member of staff on reception. He mumbled and pointed rather than speak clearly and concisely and offered no smile, welcome or manners. Handing me a room key but verbalising no number or direction to said room, I navigated my way through and up the dilapidated and dimly-lit hallway and corridors which was interspersed with wall scuffs, marks, missing plaster, fraying carpets and in one place a metal bar wedged between staircase and wall which was to keep that section of the building from crumbling onto guests below.

I would've raised concerns with the staff member but as I've already mentioned, he seemed quite disinterested in me as a guest. Especially when I was stood right in front of him.

After a few wrong turns and extensively searching the wrong floor, I found my room and ventured inside ever hopeful that my experience would now improve. It didn't. Furniture was mismatched, chipped, ill-fitting and simply broken. The worn, threadbare and grubby carpet hadn't been hoovered which can be largely forgiven as this may have served to be too much trauma for the rags underfoot. Covered in skirting board paint chippings, whose years of gloss painting could be counted like tree rings now it was possible to see it's root.

The curtain – yes singular – was thin and not wide enough to cover the window. So at least the room was light. Even when you didn't want it to be. The street lamps outside are quite bright.

If you're a fan of multi-tasking then this place is not for you. There is only one double electrical socket in the room. Both are needed for the television to work (one for tv and one for the freeview box). So you can't charge your phone at the same time. Or dry your hair. Or plug in the fan (provided). Or indeed anything else you might need electricity for. The television and freeview box has 14 working channels. They work about 20% of the time. The television buzzes constantly but as each channel buzzes a different tune and pitch then it may be possible to play a tune of your choosing.

As this double socket is the only one in the room, the staff place the fan right next to it. On the floor. Right by the door. Because it's much more important to be able to plug the fan in without moving it than to not fall over it every time you walk in and out of your room. The fan is unsurprisingly in very poor condition. Dirty and covered in dust, the base is cracked and the fan itself only points downward so having it on the floor serves no purpose at all. Some would say it points to the proverbial hell. Perhaps it would be better suited on the roof.

The hotel had a cleaner – I met her. She had manners so hopefully a transfer to reception is imminent. After all, her current position must be precarious as surely at some point the people in charge of this place will realise that you can't polish a turd. I don't use the term 'manager' as nothing seems to be managed here. Only 2 things happen at this hotel and that is the opening of the front doors and the lightening of customers wallets.

Even the waste paper baskets are battered, bent and refuse to stand properly. And the bed........................................

The mattress was simply a mass of springs which had no spring in. So really it's just coiled metal you're sleeping on. There was no duvet or blanket. Really. Read that again. NO DUVET OR BLANKET. There was one bed sheet and a throw just like the one Great Grandma used to have. In fact, this one was probably owned by Great Grandma. Thin as wafer and about as warm as one.

There were towels provided. Or handkerchiefs. Whatever.

If hygiene to any standard is important to you I can only suggest standing. In shoes. And venturing to no other part of the premises. But we all have to go to the bathroom. There were 2 shower rooms on my floor. One shower was missing it's on/off knob (so broken) and the other shower had no wall attachment to hang the shower head in. There was no soap available at one of the sinks and the other had a supermarket own brand soap pump (the design of which is no longer available to buy) – filled with water. The fact that the odour from both was equally as bad meant a decision about which to use was inconsequential. Someone had been kind enough to leave a 'gift' in the toilet which was either an inspired message or a prophetic accident. The singularly sunken and abandoned log quite simply was poetic. A message no doubt lost, ignored or snubbed like everything else in this hotel.

On my return to the hotel one night, the female receptionist asked me to go and close the front door. She obviously couldn't do it because it would cut into her very busy day of sitting.

On my final morning I received an alarm call. Not requested. There were 2 men in the next room who commenced sawing and hammering at 8:05am.

I can only recommend you stay here if they pay you. I'd recommend £60 as your starting price in negotiations. But even at that price you'll lose some self-respect and will forever feel a little dirty. And not in a good way.

Room Tip: Don't stay in one.

Stayed one night in something called a room, how the owner gets away with this is beyond me. the place stank I couldn't tell you what the smell is not that i want to know. The staff were rude and unfriendly, I think one of them smiled when i left the next night after telling them they had a cheek to call this a hotel. DO NOT USE THIS HOTEL

To start when we arrived the guy on the desk seemed to just be chatting to a friend on the phone making us just stand there like idiots! Finally booked in and was on the 3rd floor which was like walking into a hell hole! You would be completely screwed if there was a fire, which I think the place needs, when no one is in it! There was nothing in the room apart from something you were supposed to sleep on I think?? The shower didn't work, the bathroom was disgusting and had rat/mouse poison in! After about 5 minutes of trying to sleep I had a sudden steady stream of water coming through the ceiling on to my bed which soaked the bed resulting in no sleep! Luckily the ceiling didn't fall down on me but don't think it will last much long as you could put you finger straight through it with out trying! This is room 31 do not stay in this hotel if you value life!
