“Authentic”

Good food without being stunning. Lively, young atmosphere the night we were there (a Saturday) possibly due to the proximity of several university colleges. Reasonable prices but not cheap and the place itself was fashionably scruffy.
Recommended to me by a Chinese colleague as very authentically Chinese and the menu was certainly miles from the usual fare.

“Good but expensive”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 November 2013

The place is homely, the food is good but is too expensive for what they offer. Anyway, the dishes are well served and good.

“worth trying”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 October 2013

We came across this restaurant on our way to the tube station and decided to give it a try based on the number of Chinese people eating here (a cliched but generally true sign of a good Chinese restaurant). We are vegetarian and most of the dishes had meat, which I suspect were probably the best dishes. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the food, especially the griddled chilli lotus roots. Expect loads of chillis in all the spicy dishes! We had a room temperature (not sure if it was supposed to be cold or hot) appetiser of edamame, fried tofu, and fungus, which was good but very easy to prepare. We also had aubergines in yellow bean sauce, which was also very nice and easy to prepare. I mention that these last two dishes were simple because they were overpriced for the amount of work that needed to go into them. In fact, we felt that the meal was quite pricey for what we got (three dishes, rice, and tea for £32). Still, we'd come back to try it again. Service was fine on a busy Saturday evening.

“Fairly good food, terrible service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 October 2013

I recently visited this restaurant with my wife, who'd been before and remembered havung good food.
We weren't really greeted just waved to a table. We ordered 3 dishes and egg fried rice and two softs.
My experience was almost immediately ruined as when I went to the gents I saw the waiter who'd taken our order exit the cubicle and leavd the bathroom without washing his hands.
Our first dish then came and then after a few moments our second then third a bit later. We needed to prompt the staff for our drinks and rice, which after the fourth time of asking we were told we could have steamed rice as egg fried would take ten minutes. We told the waitress that we ordered 30 minutes ago and we then received some steamed rice that we're fairly sure was another table's leftovers.
The food we had was nice but the service was appalling. We won't eat here again

“Great Food but Unexpected Guest”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 September 2013

This neighbourhood has a fabulous selection of small, specialized eateries and pubs and this place had had some fairly good reviews so we gave it a shot.
Have to TOTALLY agree with previous review on the completely unwelcoming reception and the indifferent service. This was NOT a good start and it wasn't just a one-off as it continued throughout the whole meal and left us all with a very unpleasant experience. As the restaurant was full of Asian students who seemed to get more attentive service perhaps there was a language barrier but I got the distinct impression it was because were were NOT Asian.
The drinks were slow in coming prior to the meal and there was no customary visit to the table, especially when our drinks obviously were low.
The food was huge in its portions and we could have done alone with the soup. But the Szechuan dishes were lovely and spiced enough not to totally blow my mouth up and I'm sure you could have ordered more spice. The BBQ ribs, however, were leathery and far overdone. It seemed as if the had been sitting all day....they were certainly not freshly cooked.
During the long process of attempting to get our bill we happened to have a MOUSE crawl down the wall by our table and scoot around the floor. It was unafraid of our attempts to shoo it away so I would assume it is a "regular".
Although the food was very good, the poor service and unexpected guest would make me suggest you STEER CLEAR of CHILLI (not so) COOL!!!!
