I went to the graveyard on St Georges Day when there was a vigil (Happens 23rd of each month). It is wonderful to see the community doing everything it can to keep the site from being developed.John Constable did readings and people sang with enthusiasm and feeling. It is well worth a visit.

“Unusual and eerie”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2013

Hidden down a side street near London Bridge , this is a strange and powerful site. There are plans to make it a proper garden of remembrance for the paupers and prostitues buried there. I have never visited on 23rd of the month when the friends of the graveyard meet there. The gates and ribbons are beautiful and sad.

“Erie and sad but would still recommend”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 March 2013

We went as a family group as part of a ghost tour, very atmospheric just next to a railway bridge. Apparently the tube drivers don't like driving the line next to it as they have seen apparitions of pauper children buried here. Plenty of history attached to this site and the mementoes attached to the fence make you feel very emotional. Glad I went, take something to tie to the fence....if you want to be part of the rememberence.

“Powerful interesting site”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2012

We found the site by accident while looking for the borough market. The gates are very beautifully decorated. This site has much social significance and should be kept with the remaining bones untouched. We hope to attend a vigil one day.

“Crossbones Graveyard, London SE1 1TA”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2012

Crossbones Graveyard is a post-mediaeval unconsecrated paupers burial ground, now a famous 'people's shrine'. Over the years people have tied at the gates many ribbons and things of beauty. Friends of Crossbones gather at the gates on the 23rd of every month to renew the shrine and tie more mementoes. There is also a campaign to help protect this space and in future to create a public park here. More details and petition on the website.
Enjoy your visit!
