“Sad and neglected piece of History”
Reviewed 25 October 2013

Hard to find, as no sign posting. Come out of London Bridge stations turn left, onto the Borough high street, bearing right onto southwark street, you will see a railwaybridge approx 150 mtrs ahead of you.
On the lefthand side under the bridge is an arch turning into Red cross way. Crossbones Cemetry Gate is approx 100mtrs down here on the left, opposite a pub called the Boot and Flogger.
The gate is a sad thought provoking piece of our neglected history and the forgotten people buried behind it.
Only a small plaque on the gate gives you a clue to what lies here and it significance. The many tokens attatched to the gate by visitors draws you to the gate. But the overall air is one of sadness.

“Sad that this not kept better”
Reviewed 21 July 2013

Heart breaking corner of Southwark. The muesums do "glam up" the sad reality of the life for the poor at that time. This little corner is dire need of repair. It is nothing but a gate of memorials. You can get the feel of it just from that point.

“Very strange but good”
Reviewed 22 June 2013

We went here as part of the Ghost Bus tour. its a very atmospheric place and one that I have never heard of before. Obviously you can only stand at the gates but I would like to have a look around but I doubt that will be possible.

Its well worth having a read of the letters and things hanging on the gate as some have been there years. Do try and take a look as there is nothing quite like it in London.

I went to the graveyard on St Georges Day when there was a vigil (Happens 23rd of each month). It is wonderful to see the community doing everything it can to keep the site from being developed.John Constable did readings and people sang with enthusiasm and feeling. It is well worth a visit.

“Unusual and eerie”
Reviewed 23 April 2013

Hidden down a side street near London Bridge , this is a strange and powerful site. There are plans to make it a proper garden of remembrance for the paupers and prostitues buried there. I have never visited on 23rd of the month when the friends of the graveyard meet there. The gates and ribbons are beautiful and sad.
