“Wonderful food at silly prices in a beautiful venue”
Reviewed 10 July 2013

The Cittie of York is on High Holborn, near Chancery Lane Tube and is quite the most beautiful pub I've ever visited. With its high vaulted ceiling. stone floors and cloistered 4 person cubicles which line the wall facing the long bar, it's more like a cathedral than a hostelry. Even if you're teetotal it's worth a visit; not only for the location but the bar menu is awesome. Nothing is much more than £7 or £8 and at first sight it seems rather unremarkable..steak and kidney pudding, calves liver, gammon steak etc. BUT the quality is remarkable which makes it 5 star value for money. Today I had the 10 oz. gammon steak and it was the most succulent and tender and delicious steak I have ever had. By the way, they do a range of excellent beers too-try the draught organic wheat beer for a different taste and well worth the £4.24 a pint price tag.

“a quirky eccentric pub.”
Reviewed 31 May 2013

It is worth going into this pub just for the atmosphere alone. It is old, historical and has some lovely little alcoves in which to sit. The food is good, reasonably priced and plentiful. The staff are friendly and happy to chat about the history of the place.

“A good pub”
Reviewed 25 May 2013

The Cittie of Yorke has a great atmosphere and I have never seen it not full. Good Samuel Smith ales and lagers, reasonably priced, in a great oldie woldy setting.

“Another over hyped pub”
Reviewed 2 May 2013 via mobile

Friends had raved about this pub but I couldn't see the big deal. Upstairs bar is huge but had very little seating for its size. Basment bar is big but was empty and had zero atmosphere.
The only positive I took from this pub was the excellent Sam Smiths bitter.

“Good value”
Reviewed 24 April 2013

Whilst I wouldn't go out of my way to visit this pub, it has a certain charm. There is a surprising amount of space with cosy alcoves, high ceilings and a huge, long bar. I am sure at busy times there could be a great atmosphere. It was not busy when we visited as part of a group, but our long and complicated order was served quickly and efficiently. The staff, if not over effusive, had smiles on their faces and got it right.

The food is not exciting - pretty standard fare, but reasonable pies, burgers etc. Not over-priced.

If in the area, particularly if a tourist wanting to experience history and ambience, this fits the bill.
