Sofitel London St James
Ranked #26 of 1,081 Hotels in London
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 30 May 2010

Stayed at this hotel last June for a long weekend and returned this month for the same. There is no other hotel in London that we would ever consider staying in because you cannot improve on perfection. The Sofitel St James is immaculate, trendy but with lush flower displays, homely rugs and artwork. The staff are excellent - very attentive, always making sure that you are happy. The rooms are perfect, everything you would need, cleaned daily and turn-down service at night. We had a luxury room which came with a bottle of champagne and chocolates and we were asked when we would like our champagne brought to the room - it was lovely. Breakfast is also very impressive, with self-service sausage, bacon and eggs, fruit, yoghurts, baskets of pastries, and a number of things available upon request such as pancakes & maple syrup. :D The hotel is located just a short walk from Piccadilly metro stop, but we didn't need to use it much cos there is so much good stuff nearby. The Sofitel bar is also fab with amazing drinks. We got a welcome drink which included any cocktail (a slightly smaller version) - all cocktails are excellent and served with nibbles. We also spent time in the Rose Lounge this trip, which was very relaxing after spending too long in the sun! The service was also good there and the sofas are very comfortable. Nothing could have made our trips to the Sofitel St James any better and we will be back in the near future.

The best night's sleep I've had in years. I'm still dreaming about the luscious bed!

After an overnight flight from NY, we checked into the hotel around 9 am...extremely sleep deprived. To our surprise, the front desk gave us our room immediatley. How wonderful to be able to check in and crash for a few hours before hitting the town. What a huge bonus.

The room was very small (typical by any city standard) but immaculate. One of the cleanest hotel bathrooms I've ever seen. Sparkling in fact. Cozy slippers and robes, too.

My only criticism is the bathroom. There are no electric outets (anywhere in bathrooms throughout UK I'm told) and the vanity by the bed is not set up well (lightwise or space-wise) for a female to make-up. US travelers shoudl bring an extension cord if they want good lighting and traditional counter space for blow drying hair and putting on cosmetics.

The staff was so lovely and charming, too. Loved the three varieties of infused water in the lobby and bowl of fresh apples every day. The bar is cozy with wonderful cocktails and complimentary nuts/pretzels.

The concierge team is an A+ They did a fab job in getting us theater tix, mapping out our day and recommending pubs popular with locals.

We originally planned to book the rooms online; but decided to call the hotel instead. Not only did we get a less expensive rate by calling direct, but daily b'fast included. B'fast was an elaborte buffet with super pastries, tons of fresh fruit, yogurts and juices+++

I can't wait for a reason to go back to this hotel...or any other Sofitel for that matter.

We stayed at the Sofitel St James, for the last four nights of our UK trip. The check in was busy but professional. The rooms are luxurious and the bed was absolutely fantastic and if I could have taken it home with me I would have.

However, the room service let the stay down with insufficient towels, toiletries and soap. We returned on one day at 6pm to find the room not serviced.

Service in the dining room was extraordinarily slow even when we advised that we had theatre tickets and often the food ordered was not the food delivered.

The location is magnificent Waterloo Place and is just down from Picadilly Circus and 'The Mall'.

For such a prestige brand as the Sofitel the top brand in the Accor hotels chain and having experienced the service at my home town's Sofitel, the Sofitel St James was let down by poor service.

The Front of House (particularly Concierge) was the exception being courteous informative and very helpful.

I would be reluctant to stay at this Hotel again. When you're staying at a five star hotel it's the little things that make the difference between a 4 and 5 star hotel. The Sofitel failed the little things test, and with room service the basic things as well.

Stayed on two occasions (18 May to 21 May - Room 309, overlooking St James Place) and again for one night on 24th May (Rm 408 - rear of hotel, no view). On both occasions, we were checked in by Laura at the front desk who could not have been more efficient and helpful. Room 309 was graded as a junior suite (ie a larger than normal deluxe room). Room 408 was a Luxury room. On both occassions, we were told we had been upgraded.

Both rooms had great facilities, as one would expect from a 5 start hotel these days, eg wi fi, expresso machine (this had to be requested, but it was delivered very promptly) ipod connections, plasma tv etc. Room 408 however did not have a stand alone shower (in bath shower only) which may be problematic to more elderly travellers. The stand alone shower in Room 309 also leaked each time we had a shower, no matter how careful we were whilst showering. Housekeeping is probably well aware of this as we found towel neatly rolled up at the shower door, presumably to mop up the water.

Regular visitors to London will know how difficult it is to find decent sized hotel rooms at affordable rates. Whilst the Sofitel is not cheap, the rates were good value and the rooms were definitely very comfortable.

Whilst the Sofitel group of hotels is marketed as a luxury brand with style, not all properties, frankly, meet the mark. The Sofitel St James however excels and it would be difficult to find a better property to stay in London.

Well done to the entire team at Sofitel St James.

This is the place. This is the Ultimate luxury. This is the best hotel we have stayed.
We were very impressed with everything. Service, facilities, atmosphere. We were treated like royalty, the KIng and the Queen. It is pricy but in life what you pay is what you get, isn't it. There! You want the beest. Well this is the place.

This is a hotel with perfect location, terrific service, wondeful beds and quality in every way. Should they not have given us a smokers room camouflaged with perfume to fool us, I wouldn't have had anything to complain about. Avoid room 516 and everything will be fine.
